John McCain has been all over the map recently, especially when it comes to the economic crisis that's been hammering Wall Street. He also managed to make some interesting - or rather, bizarre - remarks about Spain on Wednesday. See more articles below on McCain's actions over the last few weeks.

McCain Remarks Appear To Reject Spain As Ally:

Late Wednesday night, news made its way from the other side of the Atlantic that John McCain, in an interview with a Spanish outlet, had made a series of bizarre responses to a question regarding that country's prime minister.

"Would you be willing to meet with the head of our government, Mr. Zapatero?" the questioner asked, in an exchange now being reported by several Spanish outlets.

McCain proceeded to launch into what appeared to be a boilerplate declaration about Mexico and Latin America -- but not Spain -- pressing the need to stand up to world leaders who want to harm America.

McCain Flip-Flops On AIG Bailout: Rejects It Tuesday, Says It's Okay Wednesday:

Republican presidential candidate John McCain, a day after flatly rejecting the idea of a taxpayer bailout for American International Group Inc., said Wednesday that the government had been "forced" into proposing an $85 billion loan to the nation's largest insurer.

McCain appeared to soften his opposition to the bailout proposed by the Federal Reserve, treating the plan as a necessary evil to protect ordinary Americans with finanical ties to AIG and asserting that such a financial collapse should not be allowed to happen again. He also called for an investigation to uncover any wrongdoing.

NY Times: McCain All Over The Place On The Economy:

On Monday morning, as the financial system absorbed one of its biggest shocks in generations, Senator John McCain said, as he had many times before, that he believed the fundamentals of the economy were "strong."

Hours later he backpedaled, explaining that he had meant that American workers, whom he described as the backbone of the economy, were productive and resilient. By Tuesday he was calling the economic situation "a total crisis" and denouncing "greed" on Wall Street and in Washington.

McCain Slams Wall Street "Fat Cats" Who Are His Biggest Donors:

John McCain struck a tough, quasi-populist pose this morning during his morning sweep of the television news shows. Speaking to NBC's Matt Lauer about the current crisis on Wall Street, the Republican nominee said executives have "treated it like a casino and need to be held accountable and stop walking away with these fat-cat packages."

Leave aside for the moment the fact that one of McCain's top economic advisers, former Hewlett Packard CEO Carly Fiorina, walked away with a $42 million "golden parachute" after being fired. Overall, the generic Wall Street "fat cat" is a tough character for McCain to cast as his nemesis, given his success in fundraising among their ranks. As Bloomberg reported Monday night, securities and investment companies have collectively donated millions to both McCain and Barack Obama.

Time's Joe Klein: "Increasing Numbers Of Otherwise Sober Observers... Are Calling John McCain A Liar":

Politics has always been lousy with blather and chicanery. But there are rules and traditions too. In the early weeks of the general-election campaign, a consensus has grown in the political community -- a consensus that ranges from practitioners like Karl Rove to commentators like, well, me -- that John McCain has allowed his campaign to slip the normal bounds of political propriety. The situation has gotten so intense that we in the media have slipped our normal rules as well. Usually when a candidate tells something less than the truth, we mince words. We use euphemisms like mendacity and inaccuracy ... or, as the Associated Press put it, "McCain's claims skirt facts." But increasing numbers of otherwise sober observers, even such august institutions as the New York Times editorial board, are calling John McCain a liar. You might well ask, What has McCain done to deserve this? What unwritten rules did he break? Are his transgressions of degree or of kind?

Send him to one of his 7 or 10 houses & lock him in! He is a true disgrace. The only Bush policy he hasn't flip flopped on is the ability to dodge the legal system. All we can do is look ahead- we know where we've been as a country & it has been like the Haunted Forest in The Wizard of Oz- dark & scary. Remember the sign- "I'd turn back if I were you". Run- don't walk on 4 Nov- tell everyone we're out of the woods & have seen the light- OBAMA/BIDEN 08

Alzheimer's disease. Dementia. If you have witnessed a loved one or friend succumbing to this insidious disease, you will recognize what you are seeing in John McCain's past and current behavior. You don't have to know him, or visit with him, on a regular basis to know that he is suffering. I have two sets of relatives in their sixties and seventies. One group is lucid, calm, and active. They golf, play cards, and travel. The other group is suspicious, angry, and confused on seemingly common details of their everyday life that have not changed in years such as the town they live in, or their children's names. Either group would be challenged by the constant demands on their time and energy that campaigning for the Presidency would entail. Several could not manage a schedule of errands in any given day from the post office, the grocery, and the mall to walk their mile, without needing a nap or assistance. In the past few years, I have seen Sen. McCain exhibit the "standard" characteristics of this sad disease in interviews and appearances. Add in the PTSD, and the urgency of releasing his medical records to public scrutiny is beyond argument. All we need is for the poor man to assume office, be declared incompetent, and then have Sarah Palin and her handlers take over. Far-fetched? Not really. Paraphrasing William Burroughs, "a paranoiac is someone who knows what's going on".

Could be a Neocon/Theocon conspiracy, I used to scoff, now I believe in the possibility.

i agree with you 100%. he absolutely exhibits signs of alzheimers disease. increasing age is the single most important risk factor for this disease. basically, just about everyone that lives long enough is going to develop dementia of some sort.

so i agree that your assessment is a good possibility. i can forsee mccain being declared incompetent in the first year of his presidency. this really unfunny joke would be on us

These senior moments of his are becoming a nuisance. He should be thinking about retiring to his palatial house in Arizona instead of running for prez as he's obviously out of it most days.

Which one? He has several in Arizona and several in California. I believe the total is nine. He really is 'out of it'. I think he's been taking medication to 'sharpen' him up, and it's not as effective anymore cause he's taking it a while.

It's stopped being senior moments and is becoming a senior life. No one is saying that all guys his age suffer from dementia, but he certainly seems to showing signs of it. Any time he's speaking without a script, he seems to lose it.

McCain's knowledge and recollection has failed him once again; Boomerang!

The first presidential debate is a week away. I think there is a significant chance that during that debate (or subsequent ones) that McCain, unprotected by his staff, a prepared script, or friendly crowds, may show more obvious signs of the dementia that people suspect he has.

two possibilities

1) he gets the questions in advance
2) he is allowed to give nutty responses - not forced to answer the questions

It's no surprise the Senator is tired and confused after eighteen months on the campaign trial. How many 72 year old men could do half that? I don't imagine it's any surprise to Rove, Cheney or Bush either. Looked staged from the beginning, as many have implied.

Drumroll!

I agree. But being the president for the next four years will be just as exhausting. And no, I don't think he's up to it.

McCain strikes me as having early stages of Alzheimer's, where he can't remember things, goofs up things, and has developed an intense desire to gain the Presidency at any cost, and his most intesne and strongly held personality traits, such as stubborness, aggression, and being down right mean, have been intensified.

NO ONE WANTS TO ADDRESS IT BUT I WILL,politically correct or not.It appears to me that Senator McCain seems to be showing early signs of either dimentia or alzheimers.I am not a physician nor a therapist, but I have seen the same behavior in some of my closest friends:They often misinterpret or misread statements and they get angry or testy when confronted ,they also repeat on you.I do not care about his age but his mental health seems to be cause for concern!
GOD BLESS AMERICA,THE ELDERLY ,SPAIN'S PRIME MINISTER AND THE PALIN MCCAIN CAMPAIGN.

From experience w/ family members, I'd agree and have been writing the same for months. Confusion, memory loss, frustration/anger, erratic, more belligerent. The interview on Spain seems to show him adapting a strategy for not understanding or not remembering some detail (soemthing my Grandfather used to do... ).

Is he fit? I don't think so. We need to continue to demand his medical records. His cognitive function needs to be questioned. Especially since Caribou Barbie is what we get if he can't do the job...

Sept. 18 (Bloomberg) -- 'The Democratic-controlled Congress, acknowledging that it isn't equipped to lead the way to a solution for the financial crisis and can't agree on a path to follow, is likely to just get out of the way.'

Democrats have no solutions. Obama has solutions that will only destroy the already bad infrastructure. McCain will win this election.

With a bad economy, a war in Iraq (which suddenly democrats don't want to talk about), job losses, the dollar plunging, banks foreclosing, etc... Barack the should be up by 20 points easily.

...But when the guy sits on a nationally televised interview and clearly doesnt even understand how capital gains work, Americans quickly realized he's an empty suit that reads teleprompters very well. Without the teleprompter he sounds like an idiot.

Democrats like to talk about being "all inclusive", but as Americans have watched how the democrats "all boys club" (as referred to by former Clinton press secretary Dee Dee Myers) has systematically worked to destroy Hillary, then McCain & Palin with vicious attacks based on gender, age and race... those same Americans are realizing that democrats are opposite of what they claim to be.

You've got to be kidding. A "generic" democrat would be up by at least 10 points over this ridiculous republican ticket. John Edwards or Hillary would be up by 15 or more. The reason Obama is not up by the same margin is obvious and in the eye of the beholder.

However, we democrats want Obama. He is the right candidate at the right time for America. If he loses it will be a shame, and a chance of a lifetime for this country gone down the drain.

When Obama wins, we will start a transformation in this country, not just in governing, but in race relations and in pride, it will be a positive and uplifting change of mood and attitude. I'll be able to feel patriotic again!!!

But it is oky-doky with you that "Sarah and Johnny" read off of little index cards? Get a clue. Every word is prepared in advance.

It looked to me Johnny read off Sarah's name from a little index card, as he introduced her to the public for the first time. Did anyone noticed that?
