I Like ItI Don’t Like It
Mccain

Fumbling, again, some of his economic messaging, McCain confused the Federal Election Commission for the Securities and Exchange Commission during his speech on the housing and financial crises Friday morning.

Calling for SEC Chairman Chris Cox to step down, McCain declared: "I believe the chairman of the FEC should resign and leave office immediately."

It was the second straight day in which the Senator made a verbal flub. On Thursday he actually called for Cox to be fired, only to be reminded, via an ABC News report, that the president cannot axe the SEC Chairman.

That McCain would substitute FEC for SEC may seem like an innocent rhetorical misstep. But it plays into a broader criticism of the Senator: mainly that he is uncomfortable with matters pertaining to the economy. The FEC, after all, is a regulatory agency that deals with the financing of federal elections. The SEC is an independent agency that enforces federal securities laws and regulates the securities industry.

The rest of McCain's speech Friday morning, it should be noted, was as memorable as the gaffe. The Senator ripped Obama for his ties to Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae (both via campaign contributions and advisers). And he all but blamed the Illinois Democrat -- and his allies in Congress -- for the current crisis in the market.

As Senator Obama's leader in Congress memorably put it the other day -- and I quote -- "no one knows what to do." Perhaps given that reaction, it shouldn't surprise us that the Congressional leaders of this do-nothing Congress also said that they weren't going to take action until after the election, claiming that it wasn't their fault. I am hopeful that last night's discussions are a sign they have changed their mind and will take action soon. But any action should be designed to keep people in their homes and safe guard the life savings of all Americans by protecting our financial system.

...

Two years ago, I called for reform of this corruption at Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. Congress did nothing. The Administration did nothing. Senator Obama did nothing, and actually profited from this system of abuse and scandal. While Fannie and Freddie were working to keep Congress away from their house of cards, Senator Obama was taking their money. He got more, in fact, than any other member of Congress, except for the Democratic chairman of the committee that oversees them. And while Fannie Mae was betraying the public trust, somehow its former CEO had managed to gain my opponent's trust to the point that Senator Obama actually put him in charge of his vice presidential search.

Instead of firing Cox, maybe it's time for McCain to step down. He's been in Washington 27 years and he still doesn't understand Economics 101. With McCain and his deregulation buddy Phil Gramm out of the way, there might be real change in Washington.

NEWS ADDENDUM

Apparently, Senator McCain has had a grudge against Mr. Cox going back several years, when Mr. Cox failed to comply to the Senator's pleas to "get off the grass!" during a function on the White House South Lawn.

It was suspected that Senator McCain confused the White House with one of the 10 houses that he owns, though McCain's office denied this allegation.

McCain is not only the oldest Presidential candidate EVER, he is not even in very good shape for a senior citizen. The poor old guy has been through a lot more than most people, and it shows. Standing next to the much older but healthier George Bush Sr. he looked old, sickly and grey. He can't remember his speeches and has to read them off crib sheets and teleprompters, he gets confused and befuddled when asked a question, and constantly mixes up dates, names, and places.

Just consider a typical Presidential news conference where bright international journalists keep firing hundreds of questions on all kinds of world affairs at the President. McCain could not handle that in a million years. Palin even less. They would embarrass the United States.

Maybe he thought he'd be firing the head of the South Eastern Conference. Those SEC boys sure do beat up on McCain's Arizona Pac-10 Teams

But the SEC is the best conference in CFB. Much better TY than the PAC10, the BIG10, and certainly the WAC and the MWC. Do you see how this alphabet soup of college conferences is ruining our economy?

Next, McCain will argue that the Sun Belt, one of the few with no alphabet soup acronym, is the best conference for our country. Oh, and by the way, it is also relevant to our nation to note here that Sarah Palin played basketball in high school.

ok, so the dude resigns.

then what?

come on, now.. the dude quits. what does mccain have planned, how is that going to fix things?

i love the distraction... call for heads to roll, but then have no other plan. appease a bunch of pissed off people.

i also want to know why he can do something NOW. he has been there for 26 years. he said that he called for fixes a few years ago, and noone listened. why would they listen to him NOW?

26 years to fix things, and look at where we are now. i simply cannot understand how after all this time that he has had in washington, he is going to magically step in and change things.

THAT is an asset of obama's, in my opinion... he HASN'T been there, in the middle of the mud, so i am betting on the the fact that he has more of a chance to change than mccain.

What's amusing is that Cox is voluntarily leaving when W's tenure is over. So he's asking to fire a lame duck. That oughta be effective.....

The dude quits, and then "The First Dude" Todd Palin steps into his place.

After all, he regularly participates in cash transactions when he purchases groceries, clothes and other items. And as an oil field worker, he is one of the "fundamentals of the economy" that McCain talks about. Finally, he is not sure in what respect he agrees with the Paulson Doctrine.

This gives him the experience needed to run the SEC.
