Saturday Night Live's opening skit knocked John McCain for running misleading ads about Barack Obama. As Politico reported earlier tonight (see below), Al Franken, a Democrat currently running for the Senate in Minnesota and a former SNL cast member, had a hand in crafting the skit. WATCH FRANKEN'S MCCAIN SKIT:

---

EARLIER Politico reports that Al Franken had a hand in writing tonight's Saturday Night Live skit about John McCain.

Al Franken, the former "Saturday Night Live" star now running in a high-profile Senate race in Minnesota, helped craft the opening sketch mocking John McCain that is slated to kick off the NBC comedy show tonight, according to two well-placed sources inside the network.

Franken, who hasn't been a staff writer on the show for 13 years, "phoned in" a spoof of McCain recording campaign ads in an edit booth, said an NBC source. Seth Meyers, the show's current head writer, wrote it, but the sketch was hatched by Franken, a longtime liberal satirist and comedian.

If it goes over well in Hollywood, people will watch it. If people watch it and it gets exposure, the mainstream media is forced to respond and deal with it. When the msm is forced to admit that McCain's commercials are completely insane and racially biased, people listen. People who don't pay attention to quite as much as those of us news addicts have a powerful trust in the mainstream media. When Wolf Blitzer is forced to address this, THOSE people listen and it has an effect on those people. (These are the people, by the way, who are still "undecided", and they're the ones that McCain and Obama are reaching out to right now because...the largely apathetic are the ones that frequently have the last word in any close election.)

This is the best skit that has been on SNL in years.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 12:55 PM on 09/22/2008

I agree completely. Aside from the outrageous spots that show how stupid his real ones have become, it frames the issues correctly: McCain doesn't think for himself, his aides don't know/ care about rational thought, and the audience listening needs to discern the difference.

Even Franken's once-formidable comedic talents get lost in the black hole of humour that is the present SNL.

Nah, that guy playing McCain speaks too quickly and is far too coherent. Otherwise, spot on!

Since when did you conservatives become so sensitive? Two of the most offensive things I've ever seen were when people wore band aids with purple hearts drawn on them to the Republican Convention in 2004 (making fun of John Kerry's purple hearts) and when Rush Limbaugh made fun of Michael J. Fox's Parkinson's disease. I don't remember all of your posts about how out of line those acts were. This is a SNL skit...lighten up. SNL has probably done 100 skits about Clinton.

you would be the first to cry foul if they made fun of your candidate and his children...adults are fair play, kids should be off limits!

"SNL has probably done 100 skits about Clinton."
Whoah! hold on there hoss! You lefties always call Clinton "old news" whenever we Republicans bring him up and Hillay isn't even in the running anymore so who cares what they say about her. I'd like to know why they aren't doing any skits about Obama and his absentee rate, or his complete lack of experience or his ignorance about national security and foreign policies. How about the fact that Joe Biden will actually be the one running the country while he locks Obama out of meetings while he meets with the other rich white old guys and keeps Obama on the porch?
Oh, that's right, SNL only promotes the politicians they like and collectively kiss the booties of any democrats they want in office.

Ok then, did you happen to see the more recent skits about Obama and Hillary where they were making fun of Obama getting soft ball questions and special treatment in debates? Were you so outraged by those skits? Are you as outraged about Palin's lack of experience? Absentee rate?! Check McCains! And, I don't even understand your last question. SNL is a comedy show. Relax, I don't think they'll effect the election too much. Maybe not as much as FOX news which promotes the liars and thieves that are in the White House right now...hoss.

It's too bad Ronald Reagan didn't stay where he belonged -- divorcing his wife, making cigarette commercials and playing with a chimpanzee in Hollywood!

I agree - it sucked. But what else can you expect from the small-minded folk at NBC (No Body Cares)? They've completely lost their credibility with the real world. Still, it's fun to watch the libs self destructing as they twitch from their own gallows, isn't it? They're totally freaked trying to decide if they are for or against a strong woman candidate with a handicapped child and a middle-class lifestyle - all the things they said they supported for so long. Now that we have a candidate who represents their major whines, they're really entertaining to watch, spinning like that! Whee!

George (lol) McCains recent attack on Obama concerning fan/mae & fan mac profiteering is a bunch of BS. True, he received $124,000 from their employee contributions and an additional $16,000 from upper manangement, but McCain received $169,000 from the same upper management.....LIES LIES LIES is all you get from him!!!!!!!!!!!!

If Franken did help out with the writing I wouldn't go bragging about it. The skit sucked. SNL is totally clueless about funny nowadays. Last week was an aberration.

Frankly, I think the posters here could do a better, and funnier, job. Right and left wingnuts alike. For example, Obama as Barney. McCain as the Grouch or one of the old guys. Palin as the Roadrunner. Biden as Daffy Duck [sorry...couldn't help it].

Al Franken rocks! McSame's judgement keeps getting worse. He sold out when he picked unqualified Abuse of Power Palin as his running mate. Somehow, this skit rings true. Al, Good luck with winning your Senate Seat. Americans need to vote out as many Republicans as possible. Republicans = Private Excessive Profits and Socialized Losses. Americans canot afford MORE OF THE SAME beat down of the American dream. No way, No how, No McCain, and definitely no Palin.

Jingles, The other people who commented under you are obviously fans of censorship. Which is ok. To each his own right? Me personally though, I like freedom of speech. And everyone knows that the comments sometimes get censored here, especially if you aren't marching the party line. So despite their appeal to make your comment here seem like it is confused or crazy, it is fairly obvious why you wrote it.
