Week

For John McCain, the panel discussion on This Week with George Stephanopoulos could not have been more brutal.

Minutes after conservative columnist George Will declared that the Senator was decidedly un-presidential is his unexpected call for the firing of SEC Chairman Chris Cox, Sam Donaldson, the long-time ABC hand, said that McCain's erratic message on the economy again raised questions about his age.

"I suppose the McCain campaign's hope is that when there's a big crisis, people will go for age and experience," said Will. "The question is, who in this crisis looked more presidential, calm and un-flustered? It wasn't John McCain who, as usual, substituting vehemence for coherence, said 'let's fire somebody.' And picked one of the most experienced and conservative people in the administration, Chris Cox, and for no apparent reason... It was un-presidential behavior by a presidential candidate."

Donaldson then jumped in: "It was two days after the he said the fundamentals of the economy were strong. His talking points have gotten all mixed up. And I think the question of age is back on the table."

It should be noted that McCain's call for the firing of Cox was dismissed right off the bat, as the president does not have the authority to axe an SEC chairman. The criticisms that Donaldson raised concerned the fact that McCain started the week by touting the fundamentals of the economy, before pivoting into fits of populist mantra and calling for increased regulation of the markets - position at odds with McCain's traditional economic philosophies.

"When I say age," he explained, "I don't know the difference between finding your talking points and not delivering the right ones, we have seen him do this frequently but this last week was the worst. Between two stops in Florida, as you say, he had to revise his thinking about what he wanted to say about the economy, wanted to feel the pain suddenly than say everything is great."

The whole, painful, episode crested with Will leveling an even harsher blow.

"John McCain showed his personality this week," said the writer and pundit, "and made some of us fearful."

Can't get my head around why this race is even close. The old man and the hockey mom who won't speak, running against two outstanding candidates.

However, do not let them lull you into complacency!

Also, remember the potential for voting fraud.

People like black and white, literally and figuratively. Obama is probably still even, some people wouldn't vote foe a Black Man if he were Jesus. More than you know.

Think McCain's candidacy is tanking rapidly. His ability to speak clearly and sensibly is noticeably deteriorating. His ethics, character, and message have eroded. Hope the average American who is working and not able to watch all of this that closely, has been able to get enough information to question the Republican's ability to lead. His VP choice obviously is not.

I would be curious to know what somebody else McCain's age thinks on the economic front. I don't think may other 72 year old would have made such a harsh statement without first doing the leg work. The very fact that he called for the firing of somebody who is unfirable is just terrible. That in no way helped the situation. One's attempt at sounding presidential should really focus on the issues that make one president, ie doing whats best for the country. Questioning the SEC leader wasn't good for the country

George Will basically wrote that Obama's inexperience can be overlooked.

"It is arguable that, because of his inexperience, Obama is not ready for the presidency. It is arguable that McCain, because of his boiling moralism and bottomless reservoir of certitudes, is not suited to the presidency. Unreadiness can be corrected, although perhaps at great cost, by experience. Can a dismaying temperament be fixed?"

Not ready can be fixed. When you are not suited for something then no amount of experience will make you suitable. A bed of nails is not suited to be on the bottom of a crib. You stick 50 babies on that bed of nails and yes you have the experience but it still isn't suitable to be on the bottom of the crib.

When George Will says that the Republican candidate makes him fearful, you'd better listen.

When Republicans are keener on your candidate than their own, sensible Democrats tend to ask why. Could it be that these GOP creeps have figured out something about Obama that uncritical acolytes haven't? Could it be that lots and lots of Wall Street money buys a nice, docile Democratic prez?

Yeah, right... Maybe it's the fact that they no longer wish to belong to a party of crooks and power-mad egotists.

How about:
You can't define all people by their political affiliation? Like we really can't say that because 85-90% of all blacks vote Dem are "creeps".
I liked Mac back in the 2000 primaries, then decided on George rather than the half-arsed Al, that said nothing about "Climate-Change" when he had the 8 years of power in the east-wing to make a difference. Nor did he inspire the majority of Dem's to put it away.
I'll admit my vote was a mistake, but would not have been if your guy didn't waffle.

As long as O doesn't waffle, I'll vote for him to better my country, because the guy I thought was acceptable in 2000, Mac, has proved Himself to be running for Bullwinkle-catcher of Al.

Maybe if McCain hedged like Obama, the reporters wouldn't have too much to complain about him.

All I hear Obama say is .....we NEED to do this and we NEED to do that.....
What do we need to do ??? How about some responsible ideas....we all know what we need.

Can't wait for this election to be over. Then we can complain about that instead of each side running
the other side down. There is more going on in this country than how many cars or houses anybody
has....
How about the Russian ships parked outside Venzuela to do their manuevers.....
How about Afghanistan and the fact that Pakistan won't let U.S. troops over the border to fight the terrorists parked along the border.....

Get a life people.....No matter who gets in, cars, houses, age, race, or gender isn't going to make a lot of difference. Neither side has a lot of answers on how to deal with America's problems.

John McCain: born 1936
Sam Donaldson: born 1934
George Will: born 1941
Cokie Roberts: born 1943
Donna Brazile: born 1959
George Stephanopoulis: born 1961

Aside from George and Donna, I don't think this panel has much credibility attacking McCain's age-related weaknesses (although I agree totally that they exist).

I know plenty of older people who are sharp as a tack and full of fresh ideas. McCain's ideas are as old as he is. That's the problem. We need a 21st century leader, not someone who still carries Vietnam-era baggage.

too old, too out of it, too dangerous. it is no longer political maneuvering he is dazed and confused. his choice of running mates is exhibit A. Put him out to pasture and give our country a chance to survive.
