Obama

Speaking at a rally in Charlotte Sunday, Obama addressed the issue of how the government should respond to the financial crisis. He began by stressing that Washington must recognize "that economic recovery requires that we act, not just to address the crisis on Wall Street, but also the crisis on Main Street and around kitchen tables across America." Obama also criticized the Bush Administration's lack of a plan to combat the problem:

As of now, the Bush Administration has only offered a concept with a staggering price tag, not a plan. Even if the U.S. Treasury recovers some or most of its investment over time, this initial outlay of up to $700 billion is sobering. And in return for their support, the American people must be assured that the deal reflects the basic principles of transparency, fairness, and reform.

He then made a number of key points concerning how the government should tackle the financial crisis.

First, there must be no blank check when American taxpayers are on the hook for this much money.

Second, taxpayers shouldn't be spending a dime to reward CEOs on Wall Street.

Third, taxpayers should be protected and should be able to recoup this investment.

Fourth, this plan has to help homeowners stay in their homes.

Fifth, this is a global crisis, and the United States must insist that other nations join us in helping secure the financial markets.

Sixth, we need to start putting in place the rules of the road I've been calling for for years to prevent this from ever happening again.

And finally, this plan can't just be a plan for Wall Street, it has to be a plan for Main Street.

Watch video of Obama's remarks.

Granted, I don't know much about finances, but...
if we the taxpayers bail out these institutions... we own them...right?
Or they owe us...big time...meaning repayment!

Why everybody doesn't want to vote for him is beyond my understanding. Obama is SO good.
... and then you look at the other guy and you can't believe anybody would even admit to being a Republican.

These are still very broad, and obvious, strokes.

We need more detail to fight McCain.

"This plan can't just be a plan for Wall Street, it has to be a plan for Main Street."

I think that's all the detail we're going to get.

LOL. What are you expecting to see... I mean really?

The actual legislation?

What a crock. People say "Obama is light in details" and somehow McCain isn't?

Ludicrous. Obama has given you several key points to consider in his speech, and frankly, they are all spot on.

Obama gives details,u get confused and ask for details.

McCain answers in one word,u applaud.

What you really want to ask from Obama is that,'where are his one liners'

But being the typical American that you are,you dont even know what you want. And that has always been the problem with American, they dont know what they want. Did you remember McCain campaign laying emphasis on that Obama shldnt be elected because he is intelligent?

Detail? Ms. Palin is just overflowing with detail about what she will do for our country and the middle class.....NOT! She can't even address the American people unscripted........as an Independent voter this is unacceptable and very dangerous not to mention insulting.

Thaz my man!!! Mr. Obama will have his plan ready next week (after listening to the Bush/McSame "treasury plan") and I assure you that this thing is NOT done yet. There should be NO pressure to get this "bailout" done next week. We don't need a nationalizing of our financial institutions to place more of our meager assets in the hands of Un-American, war mongering, influence peddling, PIGS (with or without lipstick)!

This is OUR Time - This is OUR Moment.

if you are going to make it sound like your candidate is worth supporting, you are going to need to learn to spell words as they are intended to be spelled, otherwise no one will pay you any mind.

I think the super wealthy should start having white elephant sales. Bust up their yachts and sell off the parts and pieces to raise the money to fix their businesses while the government gets onto the business of re-inventing a regulatory system for our time.

I can't tell you how offended I am that we the people are suddenly expected to bail out wall street when all those CEO's and execs walk away with more money than God.

Good post; I couldn't agree with you more. I've heard it said that one major priority of a newly elected President is to instill confidence in the American people that yes we can, with effort on the part of all, restore what once was, and should be, the aim of our government. I think that this speech, while being somewhat short on specifics, is more measured than I've heard expressed by either our current administration or the McCain campaign. Our country desperately needs the type of leadership that this speech intoned. Americans are fed up with hearing the same old directionless bull**** provided by the republicans who created this economic disaster. They seem to be clueless & floundering about what to do.

Why do some commentators allow McCain or his surrogates to get away with saying Barack has no plan and didn't step up immediately with a plan? I think the smarter thing was to wait and see what plan was presented by Paulson, et al and then comment. Why is that so hard to understand?

Is it better to have someone who reacts without knowing the facts leading the country so we can continue down this ruinous road. How hard is this to understand?

I cannot tolerate another 4 years of thoughtless stupidity.

President Obama laid out his economic plan on Monday before the AIG bailout. With regards to the 700B bailout both candidates were requested by Paulson to withheld coming out with their plans until Paulson and members of Congress has had a chance to discuss and come out with a plan. President Obama adhered to Paulson's request, but McSame came out and said to fire Mr. Cox. President Obama spoke about no blank check today. Where was McSame - awhol as usual.

Any CEO will tell you, until you completely understand the problem you can't prescribe a solution.

While your gunslinger Palin, your drunk-in chief Bush, and your maverick McCain might be quick to pull the trigger on any plan without deliberation and reason, typically relying solely on manufactured evidence, some of us know only thoughtful analysis can prove effective in such a situation. Clearly you don't read -- the worlds best and brightest economists are not quite sure exactly how this mess will unfold and they certainly do not claim to have the answers for a long-term solution.

Ignorant reactionary Republicans brought us to the brink (ad it isn't over) and only a strong intellect will pull us back...or in this case, bail us out.

Haven't you noticed - the biggest brains in business met with Obama this weekend. Not McCain.

Just like in the Primary Debates when Joe Biden, Chris Dodd, and Barack Obama stated over and over, "I agree with Hillary". This plan was posted on Hillary's Senate website when Obama was voting "PRESENT" by not having a plan.
http://clinton.senate.gov/news/statements/details.cfm?id=303208&& September 18, 2008, Senator Clinton Calls for Immediate Action to Halt Market Crisis, Assails Bush Administration for Ignoring Warnings as Crisis Built. Proposes Bold Steps to Restore Confidence in Market
Once again, Senator Hillary Clinton proves to be the real leader in a crisis. I called the Obama campaign office at 3am and was put on hold while Obama consulted with Bill Clinton administration former staff to see what he was for and against.
Looks like someone in the Obama campaign read Hillary Clinton's website too.

Bush and Cheney posted a gone fishing sign seven years ago. Asleep at the wheel and now the American taxpayers are suppose to bail out Wall Street when main street residents have needed assistance and the Republicans scream, "too bad, work harder, pull yourself up by your own bootstraps, etc." Boomerang!

"Fourth, this plan has to help homeowners stay in their homes."

"And finally, this plan can't just be a plan for Wall Street, it has to be a plan for Main Street."

So sorry conservativism is crashing and burning under the weight of its own failure.

Obama's plan is far more than "country last, politics first" McCain is proposed, where he is still sitting around wondering what he can get away with not proposing so as not to piss off his wall street buddies.

This is the most disappointing speech I've ever heard Obama make. "We've gotta have a plan to..." doesn't say anything about how to accomplish any of the things he's talking about. How exactly would a plan to bail out AIG also protect mortgages now? He left me without a single clue as to what he is proposing, if anything.

Fact is we're screwed. Democrats need to re-regulate so that this won't happen again, but that doesn't solve the problem we're in now. I honestly don't know if there is anything anyone can do at this point. We may just have to ride it out, adjust our expectations and pray for the best.

Not only should the top execs be denied big bonuses, They should be required to pay for the damages they've done. No tax-payer money as long as they have ANY. I'd like to see THEM homeless. This sure would send a message to future would-be parasites.
