Obama

Speaking at a rally in Charlotte Sunday, Obama addressed the issue of how the government should respond to the financial crisis. He began by stressing that Washington must recognize "that economic recovery requires that we act, not just to address the crisis on Wall Street, but also the crisis on Main Street and around kitchen tables across America." Obama also criticized the Bush Administration's lack of a plan to combat the problem:

As of now, the Bush Administration has only offered a concept with a staggering price tag, not a plan. Even if the U.S. Treasury recovers some or most of its investment over time, this initial outlay of up to $700 billion is sobering. And in return for their support, the American people must be assured that the deal reflects the basic principles of transparency, fairness, and reform.

He then made a number of key points concerning how the government should tackle the financial crisis.

First, there must be no blank check when American taxpayers are on the hook for this much money.

Second, taxpayers shouldn't be spending a dime to reward CEOs on Wall Street.

Third, taxpayers should be protected and should be able to recoup this investment.

Fourth, this plan has to help homeowners stay in their homes.

Fifth, this is a global crisis, and the United States must insist that other nations join us in helping secure the financial markets.

Sixth, we need to start putting in place the rules of the road I've been calling for for years to prevent this from ever happening again.

And finally, this plan can't just be a plan for Wall Street, it has to be a plan for Main Street.

Watch video of Obama's remarks.

Unfortunately, I don't believe a word this pathetic administration, a group of thugs thieves and liars, has to say.

I have some major concerns. For one, much of what is happening is due to the Bush administration
not controlling the financial industry. How is it that banks and mortgage companies have been allowed to issue NINJA loans (No Income, No Job, No Assets) to marginally and unqualified buyers without someone in our government knowing what was going on?? How is it that
these organizations were able to bundle bad loans along with good loans and get AAA security ratings which enabled them to be sold off to unwary investors such as retirement funds and others??? Doesn’t this amount to fraud and shouldn’t the Justice Department be looking into this for possible prosecution??

It is clear that our Federal government has been complicit in allowing
this financial crisis to occur. How is it that we taxpayers, now have to bail out these private
corporations for bad judgment and business practices on their parts? How
will they help pay for their bailout? For one, their salaries need to be
adjusted downward to not exceed what a Federal employee makes for like
responsibilities. Their bonuses need to be seized and used to pay the
expenses for the Federal takeover, which was brought about due to their misdeeds.

I am not sure what else needs to be done but we the taxpayer did nothing
wrong and we should not be forced to bear their burden while they get off
scot free.

Now we know why Bush wanted the Justice Department in his pocket. Do you really think Mulkasey will investigate any of this? It is imperative that Obama win this election. When he takes office he needs to strip the Justice Department and hire QUALIFIED attorneys to start legal action against EVERY corporation that has received taxpayer bailout money!

Short, sweet, and right to the point polaris12.

One still might have some room for debate as to whether or not Obama is right for America,... but his opponent is most decidedly NOT what America needs for the next 4 years.

I've noticed that too hippie. This campaign has aged the both of them. Makes me wonder why anybody would want this job...talk about stress. I'm an Obama supporter but feel very sad for McCain. It has affected him so much more.

Anyone who has paid all of the extra fees while applying for a loan, a mortgage or car loan or who has been unfairly charged by your credit card company 15% -25% interest while paying taxes and watching their taxes getting cut by the Bush/McCain people should be

MAD AS HELL

about this bailout. Obama is right. The people should be getting some help. Not just those fat cats on Wall Street!

The last final insult of the Bush administration is to demand one trillion dollars more of the taxpayers money to bail out the banking industry. The Bush crime syndicate has already benefitted the military/industrical/oil/security industries. What about the bankers? Can't forget them before leaving office, now can we. The SHOCK DOCTRINE in practice. What it go down. Leverage the fear to steal one trillion more dollars from the public coffers in their final hour in power. The conservative ideology has bankrupt the country. Hope you enjoyed your "lower taxes."

I totally agree with Obama's list of six conditions for this "bailout" should it be allowed to go through. Personally I have problems with the U.S. taxpayer lining the pockets of the wealthy as they cash out right before "W" ends his disasterous tenure as our president and part of me would rather see us tighten our belts and weather the storm like the poor folks who deal with terrible natural disasters. Sounds like Bush wants us to believe he'll do the right thing with Paulsen leading the way. He did such a great job handling the Iraq War when he asked the American people to "trust him", no doubt he'll do just as good a job having billions of our tax dollars disappear into another black hole with no way to account for any of it. Go, Barack! Nail these SOBs and make them accountable for their greedy and deceitful ways and cut the cords on those flippin' golden parachutes once and for all.

No blank check! Haven't the republicans had that for the past 8 years--giving to the warprofiteers and No Child Left Behind vultures they call friends. " A staggering price tag and no plan"...he's right! Obama can keep his details straight and is slow to anger. I like him. I like Charlotte too. I wish I had been there.

Watching this video is just a gift. Barack is calm, cool, smart and inspiring. He's really connecting here and I get a reassuring sense that he's looking at the BIG picture.

Gets difficult to post on CNN as they keep closing any controversial blogs in just minutes and if you blog the truth about McCain chances are it will not get printed. The GOP have ripped their guts out.

WE NEED A SMART PRESIDENT PEOPLE!!

Under Bush OR McCain, I don't think they'll put anything in place to ensure this doesn't happen again, and I for one am sick enough about my tax dollars being spent on this ONCE.

I especially like his comments about other nations needing to step up. The biggest reason this problem is so big is because of no laws around foreign investors, etc. Foreigners who invested in our market will be benefitting from our taxes. I have a BIG problem with that.

I just watched Obama on 60 minutes. Anyone with any instinct knows this guy is the real deal. He's a good, quality person and I'm proud that he's part of our political fiber. But it's also apparent that this guy is just too young, too nice, too inexperienced. I could definitely vote for this guy, but he needs another 4 years and those should be as Governor, not Senator where he will lose his chances for Presidency with his voting record.

Well, go ahead and vote for the Unstable/Unable ticket. Personally, I'd rather vote for a trained monkey (but thank heavens I have an actual qualified candidate to vote for! Obama/Biden 08)

He just doesn't have the right stuff. He should head up the National Association for Community Organizers. That would be a great position for him.

Biden is the VP you can't vote for him for President. ..and.. Obama, might I remind you has no economic experience, no foreign policy experience, chose NOT to serve his country in the military, voted present 143 times in the state senate which shows he can't make a decision to save his life, hung out with former terrorists and white racist called Jeremiah Wright. And you beleive this guy is qualified to be our Commander in Chief. Don't think so.

I don't want the de-regulator who helped to bring about the economic disaster and the war in Ir@q disaster. I don't want the guy who finished 5th from the bottom of his class who has chosen a V P that went to at least 4 different colleges before she was able to get BS. You can't be serious. You want dumb over smart. We've had dumb for 8 years and look where we are.

"just too young, too nice, too inexperienced" ................ You're basing your vote on these silly things ...

You just prove what all Democrats say about Repubs .... they vote against they interest/never vote on the issues ..... they vote on superficial stuff .........

RACISM .. is the only thing holding Obama back .............. so sad ...........

He doesn't win and it's the Race card....keep bringing that up...that will surely lose him the election.

He's not qualified, hasn't earned, doesn't have a track record of success and when I say too nice, I refer to his 143 PRESENT votes..didn't want to ruffle any feathers.. Also, economically, he's very thin on substance.

I am sorry it's not clear too all of you that he just "doesnt' have the right stuff" but you elected him, I didn't.
