Obama

Speaking at a rally in Charlotte Sunday, Obama addressed the issue of how the government should respond to the financial crisis. He began by stressing that Washington must recognize "that economic recovery requires that we act, not just to address the crisis on Wall Street, but also the crisis on Main Street and around kitchen tables across America." Obama also criticized the Bush Administration's lack of a plan to combat the problem:

As of now, the Bush Administration has only offered a concept with a staggering price tag, not a plan. Even if the U.S. Treasury recovers some or most of its investment over time, this initial outlay of up to $700 billion is sobering. And in return for their support, the American people must be assured that the deal reflects the basic principles of transparency, fairness, and reform.

He then made a number of key points concerning how the government should tackle the financial crisis.

First, there must be no blank check when American taxpayers are on the hook for this much money.

Second, taxpayers shouldn't be spending a dime to reward CEOs on Wall Street.

Third, taxpayers should be protected and should be able to recoup this investment.

Fourth, this plan has to help homeowners stay in their homes.

Fifth, this is a global crisis, and the United States must insist that other nations join us in helping secure the financial markets.

Sixth, we need to start putting in place the rules of the road I've been calling for for years to prevent this from ever happening again.

And finally, this plan can't just be a plan for Wall Street, it has to be a plan for Main Street.

Watch video of Obama's remarks.

Of course there's no help, no bailout for people with foreclosures even though they have to pay taxes that will go toward the bailouts and the continued 10 billion a month war in Iraq. This is so unfair.

If they can socialize the entire financial sector, why not education and healthcare?

To hope to keep their jobs, the CEO's should be required to accept only as much compensation as the lowliest clerk as they work for a turnaround and hope for better times. Astronomical executive salaries are another symptom of a flawed market structure. The rules of corporate self-government need to changed as well. It's too important to our country to not regulate that. If we do that we might have a successful economy and a healthier society.

The surge did not work. Troop deaths being down is great, but, it's not a indication of surge success. Troop deaths being down is not a benefit of the surge. Troop deaths are down because the troops are not being put in harms way... as they were before the surge. They added troops and stopped putting them in harms way... Hence -- Success due to staying in the green zone.

Paying each insurgent $300. per month not to shoot at our guys helped a bit as well.

Iraq has systematically been ethnically cleansed/segregated neighborhood by neighborhood plus we started paying sunni insurgents $10 a day not to shoot us. The surge is completely unsustainable, our men and women are exhausted, the best way to show support for our troops is to bring them home ASAP.

Like Bush's WMD lies... There is no concrete evidence that the "surge" was successful.

GOP/FOX Hype hype hype... Where's the beef? Ain't none, nowhere, nohow.

ALL THEY NEED TO DO is make it "LOOK" like a close race.

Barack is absolutely amazing. This all makes so much sense. And what has McCain done, said, thought? Nothing but Hyperbolic huffing and puffing about firing people and creating commissions that won't accomplish a thing. Pathetic Republican children...

Other economists have weighed in on this US financial bailout and indicate that the US Secretary of the Treasury is dead wrong in bailing out the institutions and not the core clients and that would be the homeowners who lost their homes. Not all borrowers lied about their income on mortgage applications, the majority were earnest people who wanted a home.

Rewarding people for mistakes is setting a precident for further abuses, and Paulsen wants the bailout to be without any changes.

The plan also fails in the respect of that it was the Bush government intervention that deregulated the financial markets -and that failed. It is now the same Bush government that wishes to intervene again which does not apply to their "free market" principals and also will fail.

A bail out directed to the core that is the homeowner borrowers would be far less expensive in the long run that this massive outlay of cash to the insitutions.
In addition you are putting the money back in the hands of the people that abused it and there is a matter of distrust with those individuals.
Barack Obama happens to be right in that you just do not hand over a 900 billion dollar check to the dummies who screwed up in the first place! How stupid does Bush think people real are, with his theory of "trickle down debt". The taxpayer is on the hook for the government's mistakes and its not going down too well.

What about a one-time tax on all bonuses paid out by these companies? This would return a small amount back to the taxpayers and send a clear message. It was given out as recognition of good performance, why can't it be taken back due to poor/reckless performance.

They were harder on Obama but I think he made his point clear on the Iraq war when he brought up the fact that the Iraq`war did not start 7 months ago like McCain seems `to think.
I think this`interview was possibly a good insight into how Barack is going to address` the debate`on Friday :)
Get ready..... it is going to be good!
