Obama

Speaking at a rally in Charlotte Sunday, Obama addressed the issue of how the government should respond to the financial crisis. He began by stressing that Washington must recognize "that economic recovery requires that we act, not just to address the crisis on Wall Street, but also the crisis on Main Street and around kitchen tables across America." Obama also criticized the Bush Administration's lack of a plan to combat the problem:

As of now, the Bush Administration has only offered a concept with a staggering price tag, not a plan. Even if the U.S. Treasury recovers some or most of its investment over time, this initial outlay of up to $700 billion is sobering. And in return for their support, the American people must be assured that the deal reflects the basic principles of transparency, fairness, and reform.

He then made a number of key points concerning how the government should tackle the financial crisis.

First, there must be no blank check when American taxpayers are on the hook for this much money.

Second, taxpayers shouldn't be spending a dime to reward CEOs on Wall Street.

Third, taxpayers should be protected and should be able to recoup this investment.

Fourth, this plan has to help homeowners stay in their homes.

Fifth, this is a global crisis, and the United States must insist that other nations join us in helping secure the financial markets.

Sixth, we need to start putting in place the rules of the road I've been calling for for years to prevent this from ever happening again.

And finally, this plan can't just be a plan for Wall Street, it has to be a plan for Main Street.

Watch video of Obama's remarks.

The big unaddressed point in this whole thing seems to be the role of the insurance companies in playing the financial markets. Their whole reason for wanting deregulation is that it allows them to play faster, looser and freer with other people's money, by way of making sure that it doesn't have to be paid out. Instead they get to hold onto it and play the various markets.

People seem to overlook the fact that both insurance and the investment system are simply legalized means of gambling in which "the house" gets to set the rules and the payoffs. Regulatory reform has to set limits in much the same way that regulations on other forms of gambling force "the house" to make tleast minimal payouts.

I'm in the insurance business and if your referring to insurance companies like AIG going under you have to look no further than their mortgage funding department. AIG isn't just a life, auto and home insurance company they also dabbled in home loans, which is part of the reason they got burnt.

Obama has voted "present" on the Treasury's decision, although he continues to consult with his team of advisors.

Voting 'present' means that he agrees with the bailout, but not the specifics which do not provide any protection for homeowners. It is a protest in itself also because it lets the greedy CEOs off the hook.

There is a need to amend the bill so that it primarily addresses the needs of the average American.

As well he should.

With the crap that has come out of the WH these past years, I'd think one would be prudent to study it carefully before throwing any support behind it.

He has an excellent team of financial advisers and would be wise to listen to them.

Did Obama Just Touch the Third Rail?
Curious edits to his Social Security page.
By Peter Bray
Posted Friday, Sept. 19, 2008, at 4:36 PM ET

Barack Obama is such a hard-core wonk, his camp grinds through policy day in, day out. That may be a great quality to have in a president—but it's not necessarily a smart strategy for a presidential candidate just weeks before an election.

And this week the Obama campaign modified his position on a sensitive issue: Social Security. Compare the current "Seniors & Social Security" page with the previous version. Now, tell me why, oh why, would the Obama campaign decide to delete the following sentence: "[Obama] does not believe it is necessary or fair to hardworking seniors to raise the retirement age." ...

From Factcheck:

Obama's Social Security Whopper
September 20, 2008

He tells Social Security recipients their money would now be in the stock market under McCain's plan. False.

Summary
In Daytona Beach, Obama said that "if my opponent had his way, the millions of Floridians who rely on it would've had their Social Security tied up in the stock market this week." He referred to "elderly women" at risk of poverty, and said families would be scrambling to support "grandmothers and grandfathers."

That's not true. The plan proposed by President Bush and supported by McCain in 2005 would not have allowed anyone born before 1950 to invest any part of their Social Security taxes in private accounts. All current retirees would be covered by the same benefits they are now.

So you are parsing words instead of simply agreeing that most working Americans would have lost much of their retirement in the market last week, except for those over 58.

The market is down 17% since 2000.

If you were well diversified, you may be OK. But some just have no idea how to invest and would inevitably blow their money.

Than they would be on welfare.

i think Social Security should remain in the hands of the gov't.

McCain has also said at other times, that Social Security would have to privitized to save it.
He's on tape saying it on more than one occasion.

And he didn't give any stipulations about pre-1950 at those times.

Nice try though.

That's all well and good--but what about me? I was born in 1956. What would happen to the Social Security fund if it was in the stock market and we came upon a week like this week?

I want my money to be there when I need it.

And John Mccain has been out there for months telling everyone that Obama is going to raise their taxes. That is NOT true unless you make more than $250K/yr.

McCain has a new whopper to tell everday about Obama. His campaign is full of lies every day. So if you want to talk about who puts more false info out there--that would be your guy.

If a percentage of your SS had been in the market all these years you would have built wealth instead of fear and resentment.

The DOW is only down 40 points this week. That's not a disaster.

You can spin it any way you like. After thirty years of it, we have learned how to read between your lines.

What McCain and Bush have attempted to do is put a wedge in the vault door of our Social Security system. And of course if they get just that wedge in now tomorrow it will be a crow bar. You and the rest of your crime syndicate can go to hell!!

I was glad to hear from Barack on this issue. His speech was a boost for the morale. A good policy discussion; but nothing really substantive regarding strategies and projected outcomes/timetables, etc. I guess that's asking too much at this point.

We'll just have to wait and see how this unfolds. It sounds as though times are going to get worse before they get any better. I know who I want at the helm, though. The only team that I trust to give it to me straight -- Obama/Biden '08.

Listen carefully to Obama. What do you sense? Does he know his proposals for America have been gutted by the Wall Street bailout?
He is beginning, as we all are, to realize this. As the Democratic candidate, he will continue to offer his vision because he must, and it is daily more likely he will win.
But he already knows his administration will look nothing like his plan for America. Why is that? Because a trillion dollar taxpayer bailout of Wall Street will make it impossible to fund his vision.
Two facts overshadow his plan for America.
First, our nation was unable to finance the Iraq war without borrowing, and that was only at a burn rate of 10 billion dollars a month. A taxpayer bailout of a trillion dollars is an amount greater than the cost of the entire Iraq war. A bailout incurred all at once, and paid for into and beyond the next administration.
Second, nobody can say with authority one trillion dollars is all that is needed. In fact, more than a trillion dollars is probably needed. What will happen when the bailout dollars have been spent, and it becomes obvious the crisis continues? What then?
Democrats will win this national election. A sad, pyrrhic victory.

Too bad you didn't include McCain's plan in there with your literary rant. Oh, that's right! He didn't have one! Guess what, doesn't matter if it's McCain or Obama who gets elected next we are all in for a world of hurt. I am voting Obama because he is smarter than McCain. Mac is losing it and is willing to be manipulated by those in power already.

I'm an entrepreneur. I make payroll twice a month. I'm in a white collar profession (eg, knowledge economy). My many accounts, we run a pretty successful business. Here are my observation:

- We don't produce much in this country anymore, our mfg. base is toast
- Free money (Greenspan) inflated people's sense of their wealth for 6+ years, they really could not afford what they were buying, but the banks could loan them the money (many cases through equity in their homes)
- The knowledge economy being the next tide that lifts all boats, was and is a sham ... the education base in the United States is not there to support this pipe dream
- To recover we'll need to actually produce stuff:
- windmills
- energy efficient cars,
- etc
- Anything else is a lie, you still have 2 generations that will not be able to participate in a "knowledge/intellectual-based economy"
- China and India are kicking our arses in this regard

Wake up people ... this is what has happened to the backbone of any economy (the middle class) for the last 40 years

http://tinyurl.com/68ru9x

- my Dad came here in the 1960's as part of a brain drain from another country
- with scholarships and .50cents an hour he was able to put himself through grad school (tell me that happens anymore)

- the thugs have killed the middle class; let's take our country back.
