Multiple newspapers have confirmed reports in blogs that Sarah Palin's town charged rape victims for their forensic exams while she was mayor. Now CNN has covered the story, interviewing the sponsor of a law aimed at ending the practice. He finds it hard to believe this practice could go on without the mayor's knowledge. Watch:

So Palin wants to make life easier for rapists, & McCain wants to make life easier for child abusers. how did these two ever manage to claim that they're the 'family values' candidates?

...and don't forget his track record with his wives. Remember Sturgis? I do.

Palin opposed these rape kits because they contained emergency contraception, which in her mind is tantamount to abortion. This is the reason she struck out at Monegan for lobbying for federal earmarks for these rape kits, branding him as "insubordinate."

Apparently she never got the sex education classes either. Emergency contraception is not the same thing as the abortion pill and it does not cause an abortion because at the time which it is used, the embryo has not even implanted. If the embryo has implanted, it doesn't do anything.

Sigh ... ignorance begets ignorance.

Emergency contraception is abortion if someone (say Ms. Pa-lin) believes that life begins at fertilization instead of implantation. That's what the rabid pro lifers are pushing for: the redefinition of life to begin when the egg is fertilized. Thus the pill and IUDs become abortifacients because they prevent implantation of an otherwise presumably viable embryo.

Scary how they politicize everything, huh?

Palin was on National TV and stated that because she can see Russia from Alaska she was qualified on Foreign affairs.

Thats correct, we must remember in the long run this says more about John McCain and his VERY BAD JUDGEMENT.

Country First?

Isn't this like obstruction of justice?

If you car was stolen and you had to pay a police department to investigate, wouldn't this be like the police assuming that you were lying and had to pay to have them investigate this? You were not a victim of theft? Or you have to pay for your house to be dusted for fingerprints if you were robbed?

So if you are raped and have to pay for a rape kit to prove that you were, does that mean that you have to prove you were raped or that they would not want to investigate the validity of a crime you are have been subjected to? Seems like a gross miscarriage of justice.

its not obstructiing justice. In an emergency room they collect the evidence and send it to the crime lab and then the bill is sent to the patient. in addition to the trauma and the stress afterward , then a nice little bill is delivered to the patient.

Didn't know about it? What happened to "having real responsibilities" as mayor. Wasilla - meth capital of alaska.

It's kinda like GHW Bush's "I wasn't in the loop" excuse during Iran Contra affair. He runs on foreign policy and didn't know this was going on? ah. Either he was lying or utterly inept at an area he's supposed to be strong in.
Similarly Palin's supposed to (as you said) have "real responsibilities" as mayor. So either she was out of touch with what was happening right under her nose, or she knew about it. If the latter, it won't play too well to the post-Hillary demographic McCain was hoping to pick up with her being on the ticket.

I wonder what took so long for this story to come out!!?? I read about that in the Alaska paper when she was selected and wondered why women were supporting her. I mean come on women..... even if you ARE Pro-Life, NOBODY is PRO-ABUSE! WTF!?

Her only friggin popularity is with men.....

Look at the bright side - it helped the number of rapes drop in Wasilla.

I'd like to ask women: what's more troubling, a.) having rape victims pay for their forensic exams after being raped or,
b.) forcing women who have been impregnated by a rapist - stranger or blood relative - to carry that baby to term.

There was also a federal law that stopped this practice throughout the country. It was introduced by Senator Joe Biden. Any guesses as to who voted AGAINST it? You've got it. Senator McCain voted against a bill that would stop localities from charging victims for rape kits. He and Palin are quite a pair!

Well McCain probably didn't want that gorilla that raped the woman in his joke to get caught. After all the woman enjoyed the rape. If McCain can tell jokes about this type of thing why would he think twice about voting for a bill to stop it?

She was a two term Mayor. There's no doubt she knew, but why did she do this?
She must feel that the women should've submitted to the perps. Feminist? A loud NO !!

Hey Sarah,
I've got a great idea... when you lose the election and they also impeach you as Governor...move back to Wasilla and open a store that sells Rape Kits.

By logical extension, Sarah Palin approves of incest. She is personally against abortions in the case of incest, and is less interested in stopping attacks against women and the victimization of women than she is in preventing abortion.

She admitted her personal views very clearly in her interview with Charlie Gibson.

Maybe co-Governor, Todd, was co-Mayor at the time and told her that rape victims should pay for the exams.
