Multiple newspapers have confirmed reports in blogs that Sarah Palin's town charged rape victims for their forensic exams while she was mayor. Now CNN has covered the story, interviewing the sponsor of a law aimed at ending the practice. He finds it hard to believe this practice could go on without the mayor's knowledge. Watch:

As scandalous as it sounds a few states make victims pay for their own rape kits.

IT is a tragedy in any regard, frivolous and false lawsuits rule in our country. It is easy to take a victims side initially, due to empathy, sympathy.

Dude (because you must be a guy if you're taking that line), do you have any idea of what one goes through by even taking a rape examination? Do you think there are women out there doing this just for kicks? Really?

Thanks CNN! Palin does not want rape victims to have abortions. She just does not care about women.

PBS has a poll going for people to vote whether they think Sarah Palin is qualified to be president. Right now the "yes" votes are winning, because the right wing is voting en masse.

To change this trend, click on the link below and vote (you don't have to provide email or personal info, just click yes or no in the link and it will give you to vote to date.

There is a rumor that the reason for charging for rape kits was because women are offered mifepristone - the morning after pill. Evangelical wingnuts like Palin would outlaw the use of this pill if they are allowed anywhere near the Constitution. Charging for rape kits sends a message to fellow wingnuts that her governing discourages abortion, even in cases of rape and incest.

It also discourages low income victims from pressing charges and having the option to abort a rapist's offspring. The manufacturer's suggested retail price for a package containing three 200 mg tablets of mifepristone is $270.

What about frivolous claims of r@pe by supposed victims the morning after, when they finally got a good look at who they slept with?

What about sleeping with people just so you can make that claim and you don't even have to pay for it.

How many frivolous claims do you think are made versus genuine claims? Can you honestly say that the number of frivolous claims are so prevalent that it justifies charging victims who have genuine claims of rape for the forensic kits that are used to preserve evidence of the crime? How many women are willing to subject themselves to the humiliation of that process just to wrongfully accuse some guy of rape? I am not saying that it does not happen on occasion, I am simply saying that the numbers could not possibly justify the charge. The cost of these kits should be covered by tax revenue. That is the whole point of public law enforcement. Its like charging the survivor family members of a murder victim for the cost of the CSI equipment used to gather the evidence. Insane.

Palin is evil.

Just wait, someone will have proof or documentation that Palin knew about it.

If nothing else she should have know about the state law passed in 2000 while she was mayor.

In a town that small, wouldn't she see the chief of police almost every day? And he never mentioned to her that he disagreed with the state law banning them from charging the fee?

Doesn't sound right.

Thanks Babs. Well there you go. CNN got there, but missed completing the job. The smoking gun is right there in the records. moosegirl is a liar! I hope I don't sound too angry about this. But the double standard....no....the lack of standards and accountability and excuses made for not have her stand in front of a news conference and answer any and all questions is maddening. She is running for VPOTUS for crying out loud. How do we let them get away with this.

Way to go Miss Pi g g y! Treat the women victims as having asked for it. Make them pay in essence, for their own investigation of a felony! But the upside for you I'm sure was to see more and more women deciding not to report the crime, to see Alaska's crime/rape rate (highest in the nation) go down, and woo hoo, save the "taxpayer" money! Of course bonus***points awarded for hopefully, forcing the woman to have the baby too, should she be pregnant as a result of the race. Disgraceful.

ah well, what's the big deal, right? don't these fundie wingnuts always claim that women "have it coming to them" if they don't dress "properly"? i'm sure palin figures that jeebus protects the innocent. the rest can damn well pay for their examinations. and if you're pregnant by your assailant, don't you dare even THINK about terminating! remember, sarah's watching you!

As the Mayor of Wasilla who reviewed every line of the budget for her to say "I didn't know this was goin on" is a lie and a slap in the face to all women. This woman has no morals or integrity, the only thing she has is a desire for power at anybody's expense!

Exactly... I thought being mayor meant you had "responsibilities" --- like knowing what you were signing off on in town budgets.

So either Palin is lying, and wanted to charge Rape victims for their Rape Kits. OR Sarah Palin had no real oversight over the biggest department she was responsible for. So she is a liar or incompetent, either way not too good.

How in a town of 6000 could you not know what the police chief is doing? Isn't it the job of the mayor to oversee everything in their town, including the police chief? After all, she is the chief's direct boss.

This is not good for Palin either way. She either knew what was going on and supported it, or she had no idea what someone directly under her employ was doing.
