COLORADO SPRINGS -- Acknowledging that 20 years and millions of dollars spent loudly and bitterly attacking the liberal leanings of American campuses have failed to make much of a dent in the way undergraduates are educated, some conservatives have decided to try a new strategy.

They are finding like-minded tenured professors and helping them establish academic beachheads for their ideas.

These initiatives, like the Program in Western Civilization and American Institutions at the University of Texas, Austin, or a project at the University of Colorado here in Colorado Springs, to publish a book of classic texts, are mostly financed by conservative organizations and donors, run by conservative professors. But they have a decidedly nonpartisan and nonideological face.

It seems being a liberal arts college or university would be the antithesis of the conservative agenda, that being to discourage individualism and thinking. I know from my own experience in college that the few conservatives in the young republicans on campus were all but brown shirts in name. Their meetings were mandatory, they were not allowed to associate with known liberals, and they had to contradict us at every opportunity, in and out of class.

It would be much easier to stop colleges from producing "liberals" if they would stop teaching "Critical Thinking" classes. The minute you teach people how to argue correctly and not be taken in by fallacious arguments, people quickly realize that those representing "conservatives" are depending on deception to advance their agendas.

I have always found it fascinating that people believe that college professor are the reason that more educated people end up with a liberal point of view. Instead of saying "when people go to college and get an education, they generally have liberal points of view, therefore, maybe the liberal ideas are the more informed ideas" they say "the professors there must be brainwashing them." I don't think I ever heard one of my professors' political points of view in any of my classes.
