It is a truism of modern campaigns that Republican candidates will take umbrage with perceived liberal media bias. And often, the target of their condemnation is the New York Times, a paper of record but nevertheless the scourge of many a conservative.

John McCain was different. He enjoyed close relations with much of the fourth estate and, it was reported, took particular delight in winning plaudits from editorial boards, including that of the Times.

That McCain is no longer. Today, the Arizona Republican's presidential campaign went to war with the Grey Lady. Asked to respond to an article that brought to light the fact that McCain campaign manager Rick Davis had earned nearly $2 million in lobbying fees from Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac (based, almost primarily, on his access to McCain) at the same time that he was attacking Barack Obama for his own ties to those very institutions, aides to McCain went off.

"We are first amendment absolutists on this campaign and the press and everyone who wishes to cover this race from a blogosphere and media perspective is constitutionally protected to write whatever they want," said Steve Schmidt, the campaign's chief strategist. "But whatever the New York Times once was, it is today not by any standard a journalistic organization. It is a pro-Obama advocacy organization that every day attacks the McCain campaign, attacks Gov. Palin and excuses Sen. Obama. There is no public vetting... there is no level of outrage directed at his deceitful ads... This is an organization that is completely and totally 150 percent in the tank for the Democratic candidate.... Everything that is read in the New York Times should be evaluated by the American people from that perspective. It is an organization that has made a decision to cast aside its journalistic integrity and advocate for the defeat of one candidate and the election of another."

Davis himself provided a more cordial, yet equally indignant, response.

"First of all, I appreciate all the exposure I get from the New York Times," he said. "I feel like they must have some sort of Davis envy going on... I was the public face of an organization that promoted home ownership for many years. And Fannie and Freddie were a part of 19 organizations in that group... I never lobbied a single day. Sure, I had relationships there. But you will also notice John McCain's track record even when I was involved in the home ownership alliance... I'm not exactly sure what the tie in is. You look at the track record for Barack Obama when it comes to having friends at the highest levels," and it's the opposite, Davis said.

Usually, going to war with the press produces fantastic results for Republican candidates. It rallies the compassion and support of conservative voters while encouraging more negative coverage on the opposition (driven by an editorial decision by the paper that their reporting must be more "even-handed.") But this campaign has proven a bit different. News outlets have called McCain out for his distortions lies with a general tone of confidence. We shall see how the Times' responds to this latest salvo.

It is a truism of modern campaigns that Republican candidates will take umbrage with perceived liberal media bias. And often, the target of their condemnation is the New York Times, a paper of record ...

More distraction from the McCain camp. Focus on the issues is killing them. Look, look, over there!

Are people noticing (other than Obama, of course) that the McCain spinmeisters are using the exact same words that Obama uses in his speeches? I would assume that this is meant to confuse the public to the extent that they are not sure where they originated and therefore if they hear it "first" from McCain, it was his idea, his words? Insane....ENOUGH!!! Maybe a fatigued McCain will at some point say "vote for me and Joe Biden"...ha!

In the tank for McCain? CNN, Fox, NBC, CBS, ABC, The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, virtually all of talk radio, and church pulpits from coast to coast.

It's OK. George W. Bush won twice despite the underhanded and biased attempts by the liberal media to pursuade American voters. The fact that they go easy on democrat candidates and attack Republican candidates just goes to show how much tougher Republicans really are and that we can still win despite the combined efforts of the democrat socialists and their mass liberal media propaganda machine.

The media is owned by conservatives. So stop the lying.

As for "socialism": tthis is how it works:

"Conservatives" oppose all regulation. Then when their gig crashes as result of their extremes, they get the gov't to bail them out -- to socialize their debts.

Riiiight. Did you not ever see Journeys with George? The media got warm and rosy just being around jovial George. I personally thought he was an @ssclown, but what do I know (other than time has proved me to be correct.)

OK, whatever if that is what you think , Republicans are so tough. But one day history is going to be very very hard on the Republican party.

If the Pubs are supposed to be so tough, what's with all the whining? The Supreme Court put Bush in the White House in 2000,and Republican tricks put him back in 2004.Remember that crazy exit poll turnaround that we were told to "get over",and when it happened in Ukraine,it was called voter fraud.
It's time to flush you Republicans out of office.

"...perceived liberal media bias..."
"PERCEIVED"???? There is nothing "perceived" about it at all! EVERY election year the media lob softballs to whoever the democrat candidate is and then take every possible opportunity to attack Republicans even stooping so low as to go after their families and friends. Consider how the media scrutinized President Bush's service record yet gave John Kerry passes even when he couldn't specify his answers to questions or even changed his stories. Consider how the same media had glossed over Bill Clinton dodging the draft while also downplaying the honorable service records of both GH Bush and Bob Dole. Consider how the media LOVE to report on any retaliation made by Israel against murderous attacks by Hamas, yet barely ever mention the original unprovoked attacks by Hama.

He not only doesn't read, he doesn't think either. And he clearly doesn't know the differnece between fact and opinion.

All of that being result of his being a moral relativist: to him, there is no such thing as truth; it's all opinion; the one who yells the loudest is the one who establishes "truth" -- until that becomes inconvenient, then they shout the exact opposite in effort to establish that as the "truth".

One cannot be both a moral relativist, and moral.

One cannot be both a liar, and moral.

Yeah,yngcelt...just LOOK at how the "Liberal Media" is tearing poor Sarah Palin to shreds! I can't bear to look!
Consider how the Liberal Media is currently savaging McCain over his bizarre refusal to acknowledge that some US soldiers were left behind in Vietnam.
Consider how McCain's old "cross in the dirt" story is from a BOOK,for crying out loud.
Is this the same media that cheerleaded the invasion of Iraq - or was that a DIFFERENT Liberal Media?

McCain campaign is in meltdown mode again. They have accused everyone of being "in the tank" for Obama.

Here are some of their accusations:

"What a surprise! Almost every instance! Schmidt goes on to list a series of discredited repug talking points:

Biden's son was a lobbyist for the credit card and banking industry (he wasn't, he was a consultant for MBNA)

Obama began his career raising money for William Ayers (not true and Ayers never contributed to Obama)

Obama surrogate accused Sarah Palin of being a N a zi sympathizer (Robert Wexler called Pat Buchanan a N a z i sympathizer and said Palin endorsed Buchanan)"

The McCain camp got very upset and accused the politico of being "in the tank" because the politico asked for evidence of these charges.

The fact is that McSame has always been "in the tank" with lobbyists. If you see someone standing next to him, or talking to him, it's a lobbyinst. He won't have any other sort of person near him or on his campaign.

And he's increasingly showing not only his desperation, but that he is -- yes -- a hot-head lacking the temperament for high office -- including that of the Senate.

But I'm all for his attacking the media: the media will only take so much of his childish name-calling tantrums before they begin reporting they've until now ignored in his behalf Such as his coverings-up on the MIA/POW issue in order to protect the Pentagon from scrutiny on the issue.

Anyone who defends McSame must lie to do so -- as those who defend him well know.

The 500 lb. Gorilla in the room between McCain and the Times is the lobbyist/affair story that was reported, denied, never retracted and the woman in question has remarkably disappeared from the face of the planet. Not one picture of her covering her face, interview saying "no comment" or response to this incredible allegation that the Times apparently stands behind. If the Times wants to maintain journalistic integrity it needs to follow thorough on this initial reporting and give us more than innuendo or admit it was hearsay and unsupportable as fact. Otherwise, the McCain camp allegations have gravitas and blaming the Times will continue to be effective in rallying political support from anyone who they smear for years to come.

So if employees at the NYT, who I guess would be high information voters - looking at both candidates, endorses one candidate - they become "in the tank", no matter how truthful their negative reporting turns out to be? Please, they didn't start out supporting Obama - they backed HRC in the primaries; just like African Americans didn't support Obama at first, until after Iowa.
