It is a truism of modern campaigns that Republican candidates will take umbrage with perceived liberal media bias. And often, the target of their condemnation is the New York Times, a paper of record but nevertheless the scourge of many a conservative.

John McCain was different. He enjoyed close relations with much of the fourth estate and, it was reported, took particular delight in winning plaudits from editorial boards, including that of the Times.

That McCain is no longer. Today, the Arizona Republican's presidential campaign went to war with the Grey Lady. Asked to respond to an article that brought to light the fact that McCain campaign manager Rick Davis had earned nearly $2 million in lobbying fees from Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac (based, almost primarily, on his access to McCain) at the same time that he was attacking Barack Obama for his own ties to those very institutions, aides to McCain went off.

"We are first amendment absolutists on this campaign and the press and everyone who wishes to cover this race from a blogosphere and media perspective is constitutionally protected to write whatever they want," said Steve Schmidt, the campaign's chief strategist. "But whatever the New York Times once was, it is today not by any standard a journalistic organization. It is a pro-Obama advocacy organization that every day attacks the McCain campaign, attacks Gov. Palin and excuses Sen. Obama. There is no public vetting... there is no level of outrage directed at his deceitful ads... This is an organization that is completely and totally 150 percent in the tank for the Democratic candidate.... Everything that is read in the New York Times should be evaluated by the American people from that perspective. It is an organization that has made a decision to cast aside its journalistic integrity and advocate for the defeat of one candidate and the election of another."

Davis himself provided a more cordial, yet equally indignant, response.

"First of all, I appreciate all the exposure I get from the New York Times," he said. "I feel like they must have some sort of Davis envy going on... I was the public face of an organization that promoted home ownership for many years. And Fannie and Freddie were a part of 19 organizations in that group... I never lobbied a single day. Sure, I had relationships there. But you will also notice John McCain's track record even when I was involved in the home ownership alliance... I'm not exactly sure what the tie in is. You look at the track record for Barack Obama when it comes to having friends at the highest levels," and it's the opposite, Davis said.

Usually, going to war with the press produces fantastic results for Republican candidates. It rallies the compassion and support of conservative voters while encouraging more negative coverage on the opposition (driven by an editorial decision by the paper that their reporting must be more "even-handed.") But this campaign has proven a bit different. News outlets have called McCain out for his distortions lies with a general tone of confidence. We shall see how the Times' responds to this latest salvo.

It is a truism of modern campaigns that Republican candidates will take umbrage with perceived liberal media bias. And often, the target of their condemnation is the New York Times, a paper of record ...

Long overdue for a Keating 5 ad since they are going to be launching the "Chicago Ties" ad heavy hitting and a large media buy in swing states. Someone please please make the ad?

As much as we know the Keating 5 ad will be a huge bl0w...I think they are holding it back until it will have a lasting effect. One week before the election sounds good.

It 's high time the media, including the NYT, had the guts to repudiate the bankrupt (in every sense) Republican agenda. The McCain camp certainly deserves nothing other than total repudiation.

Any right thinking individual, if they value self-preservation, social progress, and stability, would be "in the tank" for Obama when juxtaposed to that ridiculous "Politics First" team of that 72 year old ancient relic and the "hockey mom with lipstick" from that "Bridge-to-Nowhere", Alaska.

i believe his point is that Mr McCain has been given a universal pass by the media. His repeated mistakes, his false accusations, his endorsement by the NYT. The people of this country are sick of it, even those in the North Country.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 07:03 PM on 09/22/2008

Is the argument then that the NYT does not express a pro-Obama bias?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 06:40 PM on 09/22/2008

Asking about McCain campaign manager Rick Davis' $2 million payout from Fannie and Freddie is simply journalism especially when the McCain campaign brought up an extremely tenuous connection between Obama and Freddie. As to them calling McCain's lying ads what they were. That was the entire media including many conservatives.

So then what are the "facts". Is the NYT biased towards Obama or not?

The NYT endorsed Senator John McCain for President!

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 07:03 PM on 09/22/2008

Can i ask you if Fox News has a bias.
Can I ask you if the NYT was in the tank with Bush in his march to Iraq.
The entire MSM has given McCain a pass for years.
Can you believe he could mix up the two main factions in Iraq multiple times?
Do you believe that would be a candidacy ending error for others?
You guys say the same thing every 4 years, liberal media. Joke.

Now substitue the name McCain for Clinton and Davis for Wolfson/Penn. Sound familiar? If I remember correctly the Times endorsed both McCain and Clinton during the primaries. I truly don't recognize this John McCain. Is he just being 100% handled by Rick Davis and that crew or is it senility?
This McCain is just plain sad to watch.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, somebody needs to give John McCain a pacifier. Maybe it will stop some of the whining coming from his campaign. I never noticed McCain claiming that the media were biased against him when they were all over Obama everyday with every negative they could exploit. He only feels this way when he goes down in the polls. The way he runs his campaign is horrible and it shows what an ugly President he would be.

That endorsement came before McCain ''lost his bearings'' and started to blame everyone and everything when his campaign started to go south. Gramm forgot to include his pal McBush in his ''whiners'' statement. Mr. McCain, you were bragging just a short time ago that the press was ''your base''. Good move, NYT.

John McCain truly blows which ever way the wind blows. He has a new point of view every single day. For him and his campaign to be angry about the coverage they are getting and then try to claim that it is Obama who is negative, really is the last straw for me! McCain unleashed the Rove machine and let it do the dirty work and now that Obama is standing up and holding McCain accountable for the nasty ads and campaign he has been running, the only defense McCain has is to falsely claim that Obama has gone negative. The American people are smarter than McCain gives us credit for and we know the difference between slinging mud and defending yourself against the mud slingers. Obama is defending himself and the more he points out the truth about McCain, the nastier and more untruthful McCain's campaign is going to be. America, you need to tell McCain what you think of his insulting attitude toward the voters in this country. Hold him accountable and make sure he does not take his ugly way of Governing, to the White House. Vote Obama/Biden.

BREAKING NEWS

Congress, Bush team OK bailout terms; Stocks sink

By JULIE HIRSCHFELD DAVIS 11 minutes ago

Scrambling for a quick accord on the $700 billion bailout, the Bush administration and leading lawmakers have agreed to include mortgage aid and strong congressional oversight along with unprecedented help for failing financial institutions, a key lawmaker said Monday.

Unimpressed, investors sent stocks plummeting anew, pushed oil up $16 a barrel and propelled gold prices ever higher as they searched for a safe place to park their money.

President Bush prodded Congress to pass the administration's rescue plan quickly, declaring, "The whole world is watching." And there did seem to be movement in talks between the White House and Capitol Hill.

Rep. Barney Frank, D-Mass., chairman of the House Financial Services Committee, said "a great deal of progress has already been made." And a government official with knowledge of the talks said the administration had agreed to create a plan to help prevent foreclosures on mortgages it acquires as part of the bailout — a key demand of Democratic lawmakers.
