It is a truism of modern campaigns that Republican candidates will take umbrage with perceived liberal media bias. And often, the target of their condemnation is the New York Times, a paper of record but nevertheless the scourge of many a conservative.

John McCain was different. He enjoyed close relations with much of the fourth estate and, it was reported, took particular delight in winning plaudits from editorial boards, including that of the Times.

That McCain is no longer. Today, the Arizona Republican's presidential campaign went to war with the Grey Lady. Asked to respond to an article that brought to light the fact that McCain campaign manager Rick Davis had earned nearly $2 million in lobbying fees from Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac (based, almost primarily, on his access to McCain) at the same time that he was attacking Barack Obama for his own ties to those very institutions, aides to McCain went off.

"We are first amendment absolutists on this campaign and the press and everyone who wishes to cover this race from a blogosphere and media perspective is constitutionally protected to write whatever they want," said Steve Schmidt, the campaign's chief strategist. "But whatever the New York Times once was, it is today not by any standard a journalistic organization. It is a pro-Obama advocacy organization that every day attacks the McCain campaign, attacks Gov. Palin and excuses Sen. Obama. There is no public vetting... there is no level of outrage directed at his deceitful ads... This is an organization that is completely and totally 150 percent in the tank for the Democratic candidate.... Everything that is read in the New York Times should be evaluated by the American people from that perspective. It is an organization that has made a decision to cast aside its journalistic integrity and advocate for the defeat of one candidate and the election of another."

Davis himself provided a more cordial, yet equally indignant, response.

"First of all, I appreciate all the exposure I get from the New York Times," he said. "I feel like they must have some sort of Davis envy going on... I was the public face of an organization that promoted home ownership for many years. And Fannie and Freddie were a part of 19 organizations in that group... I never lobbied a single day. Sure, I had relationships there. But you will also notice John McCain's track record even when I was involved in the home ownership alliance... I'm not exactly sure what the tie in is. You look at the track record for Barack Obama when it comes to having friends at the highest levels," and it's the opposite, Davis said.

Usually, going to war with the press produces fantastic results for Republican candidates. It rallies the compassion and support of conservative voters while encouraging more negative coverage on the opposition (driven by an editorial decision by the paper that their reporting must be more "even-handed.") But this campaign has proven a bit different. News outlets have called McCain out for his distortions lies with a general tone of confidence. We shall see how the Times' responds to this latest salvo.

It is a truism of modern campaigns that Republican candidates will take umbrage with perceived liberal media bias. And often, the target of their condemnation is the New York Times, a paper of record ...

Distractions, distractions. Stay on the issue that can actually kill you, the economy.

Failure of McCain leadership: From last Monday to this Monday, absolutely no leadership, only attacks & lies about Obama, talking points because he can no longer think on his feet.

McCain would be far worse than Bush, he's not only incompetent, he's incoherent.

First, the NYT was accused of being in the tank for Obama. Then Politico.com was accused od being in the tank. Apparently, anyone who questions the emperor's new clothes gets accused of being in the tank for Obama. The McCain folks are sounding increasing shrill and paranoid.

My mom used to say, "Sure, you can blame others for all your problems. But eventually, when you realize that you are the common denominator between all of these situations, you have to accept the fact that the problem is probably with you."

McCain campaign, meet my mom.

I think Gramm was wrong when he said the American People were a bunch of whiners, it turns out that the McCain camp is a big bunch of whiners. I

Dont forget on Morning Joe last week Mika Brezinski questioned MCain and he accused her of being an Obama supporter, even though she has spent the last 3 weeks swooning over Palin.

WORD! It seemed like her end statements were increasingly ridiculous in the "what have we learned today" segment- one time it was something like "I think there's going to be a LOT more interesting stuff about Sarah Palin" and it was said in a huge girl-crush kind of way.

Note to McCain- you are running for president. Surely you expect people to examine you.

I agree with you comment entirely.
One must also agree with the assessment of outfits like NY Post and other conservative news outlets, that Obama is a shallow, no talent, empty suit.

Actually, I don't have to agree with that, at all. Obama is obviously a deeper thinker than McCain ever dreamed of being. Obama is quite intellectual AND talented. He has, in fact, written three very good books, entirely by himself, no ghostwriters required. Even O'Reilly struggles to find something negative to say about Obama and, hell, O'Reilly could find something negative about Mother Theresa. You may not like Obama's politics, and I can respect that. But to say he's shallow and without talent is like claiming Tiger Woods is merely a weekend golfer.

When the NYT dogged Obama...it was oh happy days for McCain....but now the NYT have found out the TRUTH about McCain and his campaign dogs...they start crying...

The more that McCain and Palin lies...the more truth comes out about them...McCain has even taken control of the Alaska government business to hide Palin reckless evil anti-woman behavior.

Here's a real revelation about McCain. This explains why he constantly harps on his "sacrifice to this country" as a POW. I am sure I am not the only one who realized a long time ago that this man has a guilt complex and is trying to keep people from finding out what he really did. Where here is the "rest of the story."

What Pence is mentioning is one of the options for Social Security reform that has been bantyed about over the past number of years. The reasoning is at least the private part of the account would be yours...

The big chunk of money I pay each paycheck to Social Security does not go to my account. It goes to pay current benefits. What am I going to have when I get to the age to start pulling my own benefit? That's the problem. Who knows if there'll be anything. What is known is the math doesn't add up for the long term. It never has. FDR's New Deal set it up to "rob Peter to pay Paul" from the very beginning. Now, it's such a monster (Like Medicare), that no one wants to touch it.

Am I against it? Not necessarily. However, to be ignorant and not know the projected future of this and other big entitlement programs is to put your head in the sand...

Social Security is not a "rob Peter to pay Paul" situation. Paul worked hard and paid into the system, too.

Try to set aside the greedy me me me concept and try thinking We The People instead.

What an administration McCain's would be. Spin, Spin, Bluster, and outrage. Any article or news segment that seeks to actually inform people would be met with spin, bluster, and outrage - POW, POW, Sexist, Sexist.

These people would be so bad for America. Bad at any time but our country is so vulnerable on so many fronts right now that we cannot have a White House that would be run like this.

Liberal Press? A stale debate, folks. How about this perspective: Time and time again we are seeing the symptoms of McCain's untreated post tramatic stress disorder.
Uncontrolled rages, inability to maintain intimate relationships, reiterating his experieces as a POW, inflexibility, not good under stress -- a raging case of PTSD.
McC, like many other Vietman and Iraqi vets, needs treatment much more than he needs votes. A third generation warrior with untreated PTSD as president? Not a good idea, kids, whether or not the WSJ loves him or not.

How do you know he is diagnosed with PTSD?

Apparently he has handled stress and relationships well enough to become a Field Grade officer in the Navy, retire and rise to US Senator. Not too bad. As a veteran myself, I have always appreciated the far left's version of "concern" and "compassion" for disable veterans. Your comment is another fine example.

Oh boo hoo hoo.....McCain's staff reminds me of the schoolyard bully who throws sand in everyone's face and who finally gets called out for his transgressions. I can't wait for McCain to take all his marbles and his talking heads too and go back where he came from. Unfortunately, that is Arizona (my state) where McCain never did anything for us, tried to justify it by calling it "earmark rejection" and has been the subject of numerous recall attempts. In reality, my state is and always has been a stepping stone for McCain's presidential ambitions. If it wasn't for the large mormon population there that votes in lockstep with the edicts of the church leadership (even though the church claims it's non-political ~ yeah right, they've been caught lots of times!), McCain would be out of Arizona on his ear long ago. Even the Goldwater descendents have rejected McCain and are supporting Obama. This is why, they're tired of the innuendo, sleaze and outright lies. Barry Goldwater is probably turning over in his grave at the state of the Republican party these days.
