UNITED NATIONS — Iran's president addressed the U.N. General Assembly Tuesday declaring that "the American empire" is nearing collapse and should end its military involvement in other countries.

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said terrorism is spreading quickly in Afghanistan while "the occupiers" are still in Iraq nearly six years after Saddam Hussein was ousted from power in Iraq.

"American empire in the world is reaching the end of its road, and its next rulers must limit their interference to their own borders," Ahmadinejad said.

He accused the U.S. of starting wars in Iraq and Afghanistan to win votes in elections and blamed a "few bullying powers" for trying to undermine Iran's nuclear program.

Ahmadinejad's hardline rhetoric came as no surprise and offered little in the way of compromise at the U.N., where he faces a new round of sanctions if no agreement is reached on limiting Iran's nuclear capabilities.

While he reiterated that the country's nuclear program is purely peaceful, the U.S. and others fear it is aimed at producing enriched uranium to make nuclear weapons.

Iran already is under three sets of sanctions by the U.N. Security Council for refusing to suspend uranium enrichment. Washington and its Western allies are pushing for quick passage of a fourth set of sanctions to underline the international community's resolve, but are likely to face opposition from Russia.

"A few bullying powers have sought to put hurdles in the way of the peaceful nuclear activities of the Iranian nation by exerting political and economic pressures against Iran," he said.

Ahmadinejad also lashed out at Israel on Tuesday, saying "the Zionist regime is on a definite slope to collapse, and there is no way for it to get out of the cesspool created by itself and its supporters."

The Iranian president is feared and reviled in Israel because of his repeated calls to wipe the Jewish state off the map, and his aggressive pursuit of nuclear technology has only fueled Israel's fears.

Ahmadinejad accused "a small but deceitful number of people called Zionists ... (of) dominating an important portion of the financial and monetary centers as well as the political decision-making centers of some European countries and the U.S."

Israeli President Shimon Peres reacted angrily to Ahjmadinejad's criticism. "It is again a repetition of the darkest accusations in the name of Hitler and almost anti-Semitism," Peres later told journalists.

In discussing the U.S. war in Iraq, Ahmadinejad said, "Millions have been killed or displaced, and the occupiers, without a sense of shame, are still seeking to solidify their position in the ... region and to dominate oil resources."

He suggested that the presence of U.S. and NATO forces in Afghanistan has contributed to a sharp rise in terrorism and a huge increase in the production of narcotics.

He predicted that the alliance would not be successful.

"Throughout history every force that has entered Afghanistan has left in defeat," Ahmadinejad said.

His speech came just hours after President Bush made his eighth and final appearance before the U.N. General Assembly, urging the international community to stand firm against the nuclear ambitions of Iran and North Korea.

"A few nations, regimes like Syria and Iran, continue to sponsor terror," Bush said. "Yet their numbers are growing fewer, and they're growing more isolated from the world. As the 21st century unfolds, some may be tempted to assume that the threat has receded. This would be comforting. It would be wrong."

At one point during Bush's 22-minute speech, Ahmadinejad turned to Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki and gave a thumb's down.

As in past years, the United States only had a low-level note-taker present for the Iranian president's address, said Richard Grenell, spokesman for the U.S. Mission to the United Nations. The U.S. and Iran do not have diplomatic relations.

During interviews ahead of his speech Tuesday, Ahmadinejad blamed U.S. military interventions around the world in part for the collapse of global financial markets.

"The U.S. government has made a series of mistakes in the past few decades," Ahmadinejad said an interview with the Los Angeles Times. "The imposition on the U.S. economy of the years of heavy military engagement and involvement around the world ... the war in Iraq, for example. These are heavy costs imposed on the U.S. economy.

"The world economy can no longer tolerate the budgetary deficit and the financial pressures occurring from markets here in the United States, and by the U.S. government," he added.

Too bad the crazy Iranian had to speak the truth now McCain/Bush/Cheney and the wacky neo-con republicans who got us in this mess will get a pass on their failed "government needs to stayout of bussiness' "trickle down economic policies"

If one of the european leaders had spoken the same words people would really be listening to what is simply the truth about the economic problems.

When you are right, you are right and Ahmadinejad IS right. The economic debacle we are enjoying in the US IS largely due to WAY overspending on military bullshit throughout the world since the fall of the Soviet Union. Over 750+ military bases, war after war after war, NONE of them for valid self-defense purposes. Iraq and Afghanistan are THE largest drains that are ripping the seams of the US dead economy. Throw in 700 billion dollars in income redistribution from the bottom of the income ladder to the very tip top and POOF!

You know, McCain wants to kick Russia out of the G8...me thinks the US should be kicked out of the G8 instead. It is bankrupt, produces NOTHING, and has no infrastructure to begin producing anything in the near future. If any country should be kicked out of the G8, it is the USA, NOT Russia.

Ahmadinnerjacket is right about American militarism being an important part of ther economic failure. After the fall of the Soviet Boogeyman Americans were suppose to enjoy a "peace dividend"
they earned the hard way. Instead of reaping these dividends the neocons hi jacked the 2000
election and have done everything possible to showcase a new boogeyman - Islamofascism.
Sadly, America LOST its best opportunity to harness enormous goodwill after 9/11 and sprinted
down a miltarist path without world support. We are going to pay for this debacle for years to come.
The world knows America has great ability to provide good in the world. FDR grew American
prestige unlike any President before or since. George W Bush has done the exact opposite.
He has ruined American prestige and we will be paying for it for years unless we make BIG
changes. This is a critical time in our history. I'm worried and so is the World.

Hmm, Ayatollah pi$$boy giving advice to U.S. Amazing.
I'm sure Ayatollah who's wasting billions of dollars because of sanctions and extremely expensive nuclear work at the expense of common Iranians is any different. Fortunately for the world Iran is too weak to build an empire.

Saudi daily Arab News of January 24:
"The problem for the president of Iran is that the economy is weak... Despite its oil wealth, life is hard for ordinary Iranians. There is therefore a groundswell of frustration because of the president's economic neglect. Instead of attempting to solve the unemployment and poverty problems of its people, the new revolutionaries decided instead to "export the revolution. What the revolutionaries did in Tehran was a disaster rather than an example."

Dr. Abbas Bakhtiar:
As inflation is rapidly approaching critical levels, economists and politicians have began to sound the alarms. There are now open calls for impeachment of several government ministers and although not openly mentioned, the moderates and some conservatives would like nothing more than impeaching the president himself. I have no independent knowledge yet of the situation in Iran as to inflation or corruption.

However, I would be much more inclined to believe what is in a government controlled newspaper if it weren't from a country that is a Sunni enemy of the Shia country, Iran.

I'll do my own fact checking, thank you very much.

We need intelligence to fight intelligence. These global leaders are very well informed, unlike some people running for office in America. With all of our designer colleges( not to mention the cost of tuition) we have educated a bunch of unqualified political leaders as well as financial rapists.

It seems that you prefer the press-shunning Palin with her miniscule "education" that took 6 years and 5 obscure colleges. A true wollower to Bush.
The US became a point of serious concern to any thinking person since we have too many WMD and a poorly educated populace that is able to elect a dishonest ignoramus (like Bush) and a malicious careerist (like Cheney and Palin).
The GOP has been working hard to make this country the Land of Less Free. Surveillance and bailouts are their most notable achievements.

When you Liberals trash the USA, why do you always start out by saying, "this great country of ours", "I love this country but", "our beloved country"? I remember when that other nut job, Hugo Chavez was here trashing the US all you guys did the same thing. Why do Liberals love leaders like these? You seem to forget you wouldn't be able to do this if you lived in one of their countries, or Castros Cuba. Could someone explain to me why Liberals love these mad Men so much? Would you rather America were like Iran, Cuba? Do you really want the USA to move to Socialism?

Ahmadinjad, Castro, Chavez et alia are Einsteins compared to anything the Republican party has produced since Eisenhower. We don't "love" them. We are able to make nuanced, fact- and reality-based assesments of them. That's what happens when you are capable of reason.
Normal people with brains are socialists. Ever heard of Euope, where you can cross a bridge without it collapsing? Get over it.
Ever heard of FDR? We won World War II (in which my father VOLUNTEERED for service) with socialism.
When "liberals" (nomal people) say "this great country", we mean the country founded by our Founding Fathers under the United States Constitution - something you mortally hate.

Iran, Cuba and others are what they are today because of the aggression and threats by the U.S. government. You cannot expect a liberal and open society when a menacing power is always scheming to take down and subjugate these countries. Read your history for September 11, 1970 when the democratically elected government of Chile was overthrown as an example. There are tens if not hundreds more examples.

And as far as "Socialism" the U.S. is now there with the $700B bailout.

Exactamundo,Princeton...Iran is an excellent example. There was Mohammed Mossadegh, elected leader-then he decided to nationalize Iran's oil. BP said, "BS!" and Britain and US helped to overthrow him,and he was replaced him with the Shah. Then there was the Revolution, the Ayatollah Khomeini,American hostages, the US supporting Hussein, the US supporting him when he attacked Iran, the US "accidentally" shooting an Iranian 747 down, killing about 300,the Axis of Evil....and here we are today.
What's the lesson here? Stop farting around in other countries' business!

If you refuse to see or admit that our government's policies cause the majority of our problems, then I suggest looking into a mirror and calling yourself gutless.

If you can't openly criticize your own government, when things are as bad as they are - you are gutless.

If you continue to pay hand over foot for gas, health care, insurance.....if you still have a job, and find it easier to call other citizens gutless, you are in fact the cow@rd.

If you can't admit that your enemy has rightfully identified the source of your problems, and then in turn you call other Americans gutless because they don't agree with you.....

I think you have more in common with the president of a dictatorship than you may care to admit.

But I wont hold that against you.

A powerless puppet - figure head representing a belligerent regional power, has in one statement driven home the crux of the American problem - War.

It is for the same reasons that Iran continues to fan the flames in Iraq, and elsewhere through Syria and Hezbollah.

....the same reasons why Russia (although provoked) saw a priceless opportunity to "push back", making their own statement of intent in their neck of the woods...

...the same reasons why Chavez is mastering domestic politics by blustering endlessly and launching a bilateral maritime exercises with Russia...

The United States has been weakened by the lingering effects of a failed foreign policy and stubborn ideology. Our national security and economic strength have been severely undermined like never before - by our own hands.

Iran, Russia, North Korea, will take the opportunity to "close the gap".

Our allies too (France, Germany etc) will also step up to claim preeminent diplomatic credibility that was once the hallmark of this great nation.

What more has to happen for some of us to understand?

This is no longer about conservative vs liberal. When citizens start losing sons and daughters, jobs, homes, health care, as result of government policy.....this is about saving OUR OWN country from self destruction.
