Howard Dean gave a strong interview on MSNBC earlier today, hitting John McCain for his involvement in the "Keating 5" savings and loan scandal. He also focused on the Democratic Party's approach to the bailout package, on the differences in temperament between Barack Obama and John McCain, and on the upcoming debate.

Here's some of what Dean had to say:

On Democrats and Obama:

The Democrats are what's protecting the American taxpayers from the likes of John McCain and George Bush. ... What Barack is trying to do is shore up American confidence...it must be a bill that protects taxpayers and mortgage payers, and does not give huge amounts of money to CEOs pocketing taxpayers' money.

On McCain:

He was involved himself in the last big meltdown we had, the savings and loan scandal, taking money from Charles Keating...The question is do you want the next president to be somebody who got us into this mess and has a long history of being involved in these kinds of scandals on the wrong side, or do you want this next person to be calm, thoughtful and willing to work across partisan lines to get together a package that we can work with?

On the debate:

Senator Obama is probably better at leading us through foreign crises than Senator McCain is, Senator McCain is apt to react to things in sort of a hot-headed way, he's a little irascible. I think you'll see a calmness and thoughtfulness in Senator Obama, and that's the kind of leader we want.

Dean advising abt temperment is like Batman's "Joker" advising on appropriate business attire.

Dean, let us hear your rebel yell one more time.

I, for one, would love to hear it again. It was a signal to round up the troops and to get back to work!

What's McCain's ranting and raving about? Somehow, unlike Dr. Dean's, I don't think it's very inspiring to those on the receiving end.

Incidental "rebel yell" v. Long standing temperament? Same thing? Please, let's not result to such tenuous connections...

kind of a corny interview. I agree with what he said, but he was corny.

Dean is exactly right. McCain has a history of temper and outbursts. Americans don't want some unstable loony with his finger on the trigger.

In al seriousness - Howard Dean is my favorite politician ever. It literally broke my heart when he went down in flames furing the 2004 primaries.

And it gave me great satisfaction (as I'm sure it did him) to hear him call McCain "hotheaded" - because the shoe actually fits!

When Howard Dean and George Will agree, there is something going on that's NOT good for John McCain.

SEDANMIK

I love Howard Dean but you are not correct about Al Gore. Before Howard Dean, Gore gave a speech, in 2002, or early 2003, at the Commonwealth Club in S.F., strongly challenging the war drums about invading Iraq. Equally vocal in challenging the propaganda war to invade Iraq were the two long serving Democrats in the Senate: Senators Byrd and Kennedy. Al Gore was also the first most prominent Democrat, besides Senator Russ Feingold, to challenge Bush's assault on the Bill of Rights. Certainly Howard Dean was right there behind him and deserves credit for his 2004 campaign that energized most of us. I agree that Howard Dean deserves an exalted place in American history, and especially in the history of the Democratic party. As chair of the DNC he successfully led the Democratic take over of Congress in 2006. I also think that his grand vision of contesting all the fifty states will immensely benefit the Obama-Biden ticket.

He's not, actually. But I'm sure you know this.

heapbigchief;

I am sorry you are so dense that you cant tell the difference between the enthusiasm of Howard Dean trying to motivate his supporters, and the hot headed John McCain who is ready to bomb Iran, wage war against Russia over Georgia, and fire the Chairman of SEC, without thinking through about the consequences.

No, "INDmind".

Intelligence, honesty, political savvy, and concern for the country under inept Republican handling.
That would describe Dean.
Foul-tempered, five steps behind his opposition on every issue, playing both sides of the fence on every issue, not concerned for the average working man, a prima donna who demands advanced scripted news coverage, add a scary touch of dementia with a fuzzy take on names, geography, country's leaders and factions, would describe McCain.
But the elderly senator is always ready for a war.

Tell us now, did you write the Time article about "Obama cutting back his fifty state agenda".

You and Time seem to have lots of pay checks coming in from the GOP.

If you didn't have a hand in it, someone needs to find out which one makes the largest misstatements or right-slanted B.S.

Funny.

Why not...he knows temperaments! He knows that's why he went down when he ran, and he knows that it's a VERY concerning quality to many voters.

But at least John McCain has Greenspan advising him. That should help us get out of this mess.

Oh, uh, never mind.
