Steven Spielberg and wife Kate Capshaw have followed Brad Pitt as the latest big-name donors to join the fight to defeat California's Proposition 8, the initiative to ban same-sex marriage. The Spielbergs have cut a $100,000 check for the fight, as did Pitt last week.

In a statement, the Spielbergs said:

"By writing discrimination into our state constitution, Proposition 8 seeks to eliminate the right of each and every citizen in our state to marry regardless of sexual orientation. Such discrimination has NO place in California's constitution, or any other."

"American Beauty" producer Bruce Cohen, who is a finance co-chair on the campaign to defeat Proposition 8, said in a statement:

"It's phenomenal that Kate and Steven are affirming their unwavering commitment to equality in such a significant a way. More than 15 years ago, Steven was the first person in Hollywood who I came out to, news which he greeted with his full love and support then and ever since. It is my fervent hope that other entertainment industry leaders will follow the lead of Brad Pitt and the Spielbergs and fight to maintain equal rights for all Californians."

Well good for Spielberg, and the causes He stands for with others!

Someone tell Spielberg that I have a Movie Idea about Africa that would out-sell Amistad, and it look towards the future, not Africa's the past!!

where is Ellen de Generes? Shouldn't she be shelling out a portion of her money, since this is very personal for her and to most of her fans who watch her shows... I wish she will show some financial support.

She may have done it quietly. Many times there are well-known people who would rather remain anonymous when donating. It doesn't mean they're scared off by the cause, that they would want to remain unknown, but it's just how they prefer to donate.

Ever hear of anonymous giving?

she married her partner and it was well documented and she even showed it on her show. if ever, why keep her financial support anonymously, when it can be a statement for others to follow. Ellen is a BIG name and this fight needs BIG personalities that will help people to vote NO!!! but then again, maybe her name is so big that she does not want her advertisers to stop shelling out some dough for her shows. Just saying, someone has to give, since they can and especially when they have more.

Ellen has done more for our rights as an LGBT community than probably any 10 people you can name. Give her time. She will donate when it can get the most bang for the buck. Our friends in the industry with way more money than we can ever hope to have will keep doing this one at a time to keep it in the forefront of the news...you'll see. And, how much was the check for that YOU wrote?

Well the LGBT community needs her front and center... not when the issue is over. I am sure she has done lots and lots for the community but who's been on her side all her carreer and who conituosly support her -- the LGBT community. The peculiarity of this issue, it affects her and the rest of her family and the community that supports her and love her.
