Today's Washington Post-ABC News poll has good news for Barack Obama, who now has a clear lead and an edge on economic issues:

Turmoil in the financial industry and growing pessimism about the economy have altered the shape of the presidential race, giving Democratic nominee Barack Obama the first clear lead of the general-election campaign over Republican John McCain, according to the latest Washington Post-ABC News national poll.

Just 9 percent of those surveyed rated the economy as good or excellent, the first time that number has been in single digits since the days just before the 1992 election. Just 14 percent said the country is heading in the right direction, equaling the record low on that question in polls dating back to 1973.

More voters trust Obama to deal with the economy, and he currently has a big edge as the candidate who is more in tune with the economic problems Americans now face. He also has a double-digit advantage on handling the current problems on Wall Street, and as a result, there has been a rise in his overall support. The poll found that, among likely voters, Obama now leads McCain by 52 percent to 43 percent. Two weeks ago, in the days immediately following the Republican National Convention, the race was essentially even, with McCain at 49 percent and Obama at 47 percent.

The poll also dampens concerns that Obama can't win over white women:

Two weeks ago, McCain held a substantial advantage among white voters, including newfound strength with white women. In the face of bad economic news, the two candidates now run about evenly among white women, and Obama has narrowed the overall gap among white voters to five percentage points.

No More Mister Nice Blog argues that "about evenly" understates Obama's gains with the group:

In fact, that understates the turnaround. If you check the PDF of the poll results, you see that McCain had a 16-point lead among white women in mid-June, just after Hillary Clinton ended her campaign; Obama is now up by 2.

John McCain's campaign is aggressively spinning the poll, TPM reports:

The McCain camp rolled out their top pollster Bill McInturff, who argued on a conference call with reporters moments ago that the poll is an outlier whose results are skewed by lopsided party identification numbers, which showed the Democrats with a 16-point advantage over the GOP after leaners were pushed.

"It's appropriate to say politely that this one poll is an unusual outlier that does not represent where this campaign is or where it's heading as we go into the first presidential debate," McInturfff said.

How bi-partisan will the Dems (and left-wing nut job's) be if McCain wins?
Ohhhh, bi-partisanship is just a Dem campaign issue, not a real goal.
Now I understand.

Wake up. To survive, the GOP needs to evolve and stop being an appendage of the chamber of commerce and religious fanatics. The country is changing. Adapt or perish.

I don't believe the polls that show Obama down but suspect the polls that show Obama leading substantially even more. Many of them are designed to suppress the Obama voter turnout. Remember how the exit polling was released in Florida before the panhandle polling places closed in the 2000 GE against Gore.

Remember to vote and have your vote count to overturn the polls that show Obama losing and confirm polls that show him winning.

Most polls work from phone lists of land lines. By eliminating cell phones, you skew your respondents into the older age ranges, as many younger Americans only have cell phones. So unless they add a weighting factor based on age (I don't think any do) they are going to underestimate whichever candidate appeals most to younger voters, in this case Obama.

The only poll that matters is the one on November 4th.

What percentage of people thought we were on the wrong track during other hand-wrining times, like the Great Depression, or WWII, or during Kennedy's Bay Of Pigs effort?
Who doesn't want America to enjoy more comfortable and prosperous times?

I've said it before and i keep saying it. If your sinking in quicksand and a black hand offers to pull you out , you grab it. Obama is holding out his hand.

Unfortunately, people don't think they are in quicksand they think the world is getting bigger.

Let us hope the Bradely effect is a thing of the past.

Look at the link of the Drudge Report:

"POLL: GAINS CLEAR LEAD IN PRESIDENTIAL RACE..."

Matt Drudge can't bring himself to type, "OBAMA gains clear lead in Presidential Race."

So sorry (not really) for the conservatives seeing their ideology go down in flames.

Also that both campaigns have very large planes that can get them to DC from MISS ... fast, that he has been in constant contact with dem leaders & Paulin daily!! Bu$h, Inc. says Mc's description of the bailout plan failing is not accurate ... Apparently no one in the reThug party or the WH asked Mc to come back to DC!!

Love our Colorado rednecks. They don't mind making their kids look stupid. This will get worse as O climbs in the polls.

I'm almost hoping it does continue to look close, so the Rs think they've got it made. No one is asking my sons (nor any of their fellow liberal students) how they're voting...

If McCain needs more time to prepare to debate Obama on our foreign policies after serving 28 yerars in the Senate, it tells us how meaningless, inconsequential his, McCains 28 years experience is when it comes to being unprepared as the leader of the most powerful nation in history.

And there is No Way that Obama should place himself in a session convened by Bush to listen to Bush pontificate his plans for correcting this financial crisis with Obama appearng as a student under Bush.

How clever these Bush/ McCain strategists are. If Obama refuses, he is uncooperative; if Obama falls for the the suggestion to plce himself in a situation where he appears subservient to the idiot Bush, then it elevates McCain and diminishes Obama's political prestiege in the eyes of undecided Americans voters

PBS News Hour had Allan Meltzer, professor of political economy & public policy at Carnegie Mellon University and a visiting scholar at the American Enterprise Institute. On bailout:

ALLAN MELTZER: It's a terrible idea. It's undemocratic. It's bad economic policy, and it's bad social policy. And it has a very little chance of solving the problem in a meaningful way.

I've listened to governments tell me for 40 years that there was a crisis and the world was going to fall apart if we didn't do this or that. But there have been a few cases where they weren't able to do that.

One was the commercial paper crisis in 1970. There have been several others. The world did not fall apart. Last week, we had Lehman Brothers went into bankruptcy. Within three days, most of the assets were sold.

We had AIG turn down three offers to buy the company because they thought they would get a better deal from the government. It turned out they didn't get the better deal from the government. Now the stockholders suddenly woke up and said -- the major stockholders said, "We'd like to buy the company."

Well, that's what I think we need to do. We need to get the government's hand out of this, and let's see whether we can't get a market solution.

Some fun facts about John McCain: Of all Senators, John McCain has been the most absent. There have been 643 votes taken in the current Senate session: McCain has missed 412 of them.

McCain has not voted in the Senate since April 8th. Since March, he has missed 109 of the last 110 votes.

He missed votes on the GI Bill, energy policy, and in 2007 he missed "all 15 critical environmental votes in the Senate" -- giving him a 2007 rating of 0% from the League of Conservation Voters.
