John McCain's push to postpone Friday's debate is being met with wide skepticism from pundits, the American public, and even fellow Republicans.

Here's another good reason to question whether this was a principled move: once upon a time, in October 1999, Senate Republicans led by Phil Gramm were deep in negotiations on key legislation to deregulate the banking industry. The New York Times reported at the time:

"The deal was announced about 2 A.M. after a compromise was reached over the measure's effect on lending rules for the disadvantaged, the source of months of partisan bickering between the White House and Senator Phil Gramm, the Texas Republican who heads the banking committee. ... For more than 20 years, Congress has tried unsuccessfully to rewrite the nation's financial services laws and repeal Glass-Steagall... That all changed in recent years as the lines between the industries began to blur and it became more broadly acknowledged that a deregulation of financial services could be beneficial to insurers, bankers and securities firms alike. Once the three industries rallied around the legislation, they became a formidable political force, raising millions of dollars for lawmakers and pressing both Republican leaders in Congress and the White House for new legislation."

Those negotiations took place on October 22. And where was McCain at the time? At a presidential debate in New Hampshire, praising deregulation. Take a look for yourself:

McCain's quote: "There's a number of reasons why we are experiencing this almost unprecedented prosperity. Among them are a lack of regulation, free trade, and most importantly, we are going through a revolution the likes of which the world has seldom seen."

As has been brought out already . . .

Debates proceeded as planned during the prez elections of 1864, while the country was fighting a F-ing Civil War -- and during the 1944 elections, too, when the nation was busy with WWII.

So, now, according to the McChicken campaign, this is bigger than either one of those crisises?

Talk about tortured logic!!!!!!

He was the ONLY Senator not to vote on Gramm-Leach-Bliley.

Nays 44% 39 Dems, 1 Ind
Ayes 54% 44 Repubs, 1 Dem, 1 Ind

Please note that there is a slight glitch in this voting record. GovTrack does not know the party affiliation of some historical Members of Congress, and as a result the party totals above are not correct.

I was just about to post that.

I wonder if the new GOP emergency talking points fax is attempting to distance McSame away from Gramm-Leach-Bliley.

However the record doesn't lie.

Brad,

You talk a good game. Is this a true conversion or your new angle to illicit responses?

It's okay with me, everyone likes a winner.

John McCain is a sneaky man, and his obvious calculated, political move today will no doubt appear in a campaign ad next week, McCain claiming that he put his country first! This was simply a sneaky move, for politcal gain by John McCain, and sadly alot of people will probably fall for this disgraceful ploy by John McCain.

Democrats please call your Independent and Democratic friends, and let them know that this is a very calculated, sneaky political move by John McCain, and they should NOT to fall for it!!
The proof that this is all a sneaky political ploy by John McCain is the many negative campaign ads McCain will put out on this NEXT WEEK.

Obama is putting country first by giving us a chance to see and evaluate him. McCain chickened
out because other than attacks he has no issues to discuss. I mean how many times can he
tell us he was a POW, knows how to find Bin Laden and knows how to win wars.

Good scoop, Nico. I'm sure this will be on MSM tv shows inside of 12 hours, but you are the man!

Kudos aside.....

Is this not indicative of how McCain has sold his soul/integrity/honor all to become President?

Also, re: milo's remark about McCain whining about Obama's voting present? How many people know that McCain has missed more votes in the Senate than ANYONE except the Senator from North Dakota who had a brain tumor and was in a coma?

Desperate times call for desperate measures. See: McCain campaign

Wow. The last 10 years have been hard on McCain. He was so much more with in in 1999. He speaks so much more haltingly and appears disconnected always these days.

I agree and really think his age is affecting him to the point that he is not
truly qualified to be president.

Having experienced both dementia and Alzheimer's
in my own family, he seems to be foggy to the point of red flags for me.
I wouldn't vote for him anyway, but it's sad to see someone coming undone
like this right in front of the entire world. He's not knowledgeable on the economy
to begin with, but watching him try to make sense is pathetic, and the stumbling
when he speaks, the gaffes and the general lack of direction leads me to
believe he may be heading for dementia.

Ronald Reagan had Alzheimer's and it was in fact in the early stages
while he was still in office. Age related stuff like this can be subtle in appearance,
but once you've been around it, it is then hard to miss the symptoms.....
One other point- dementia and Alzheimer's tend to accelerate behaviors such
as anger issues, belligerence and so on... what will this man be like in
a couple more years??? it only gets worse and there is no cure for either.

That loopy left eye of his has really had me worried. It's obvious he's beyond exhaustion. It's a foregone conclusion that whatever he assumes with his condition, the country will be affected, somehow. With times like they are, we can't afford the drama, or the distraction. That alone makes me feel a lot better about Obama's steady vision about what must be done.

Way to go, Brad.

I gotta say, you've been contentious, but it's understable anyone with some salt would want to fight for true conviction.
You're obviously getting a clue that these times are just too dangerous, and Americans have got to fight to WIN.
Obama will be an excellent CIC. There is simply no BS in the man. He's on a true mission. Truly something to be proud of.

Try just for a second to find some other good qualities in Sen. Obama, like intelligence, honesty, his passion to help the disadvantaged and so on.

Welcome aboard! This is not a time to hold political grudges but to get "all hands on board" because the future of our country is at stake! I believe Senator Barack Obama has the right temperament, judgment, and leadership to not only handle this economic crisis (because he's a team player, in contact with Congress) but also to present himself to America for open examination on Friday night, at the first debate. We need to hear for ourselves what Obama (and anyone else who shows up) has to say.

If the object is to damage the United States, John McCain, Phil Gramm and George W. Bush make Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and Osama bin Laden look like minor nuisances.

McCain is suspending his campaign all over the place...I'm starting to think he would suspend our rights (free speech, freedom to gather, freedom, etc) - in times he thought were a crisis. I don't like all this "suspending" stuff.
