I Like ItI Don’t Like It

Here's a new video taking a look at John McCain's Keating Five problem in just 97 seconds.

The video combines archival footage of CBS and NBC News (including a report from Andrea Mitchell!) with reporting by CNN's John King aired just last month.

The bottom-line is that two decades after his role in the savings and loan crisis, John McCain is still the same old guy, more focused on deregulation than on delivering the sensible protections we need.

Video edited by Jed Lewison for The Huffington Post.

UPDATE: ThinkProgress catches McCain being asked about the Keating Five scandal yesterday by a local Ohio reporter.

Hit him right over his head with this on Friday, where he won't be able to backtrack any comments. See it live and in color on Friday. They really don't have a clue who they are messing with. The O-Team is not slow by any means of the imagination. Emerilize the De Regulator! BAM, BAM, BAM BAM BAM! LOL! Watch the rest of the blood go out of his face on this one.

Noooooo - he should keep Rick Davis.

We don't want someone taking Davis' place that is bright like Obama's campaign manager, do we?

Precisely.....as with Palin, she does him more harm than good...all she does is raise contradictions... women's rights, experience, commander in chief... which means he looks less presidential. Biden is doing a great, no distractions.

I listened to the McCain Campaign press call where a reporter asked about this and their response was not good. They immediately started trying to point fingers at Obama and saying, why don't you ask him questions? This was their press call. They had no good response. This is definitely an area to pursue, especially with the recent disclosure of payments to Rick Davis' firm up until last month.

"John McCain's campaign manager and Freddie Mac essentially had what amounts to a secret half a million dollar lay-a-way plan. For almost three years and as late as last month, Freddie Mac made secret, monthly payments of $15,000 to Rick Davis's firm, apparently in exchange for providing special access to a future McCain White House. If McCain knew about this, his presidential campaign should be in serious trouble. If he didn't know about it, he ought to fire Rick Davis immediately," said David Donnelly, Director of Campaign Money Watch.

Can't view this because of a crappy dial-up connection, but I truly agree about the K5 scandal being used as an ad! Perfect time for it.

McCain is getting a HUGE pass on this. In this time of financial crisis, shouldn't someone be asking him to explain himself?

I believe that question has been posed to him. His response to THAT question?

No answer.

The S&L bailout was 500 Billion in 1990. At an average 3.5% inflation, that you mean it was $928 Billion in today's dollars. The estimate for the 2008 bailout is 700 billion. So I guess Johnny still holds the record for being in the center of the worst bailout ever.

Please bring this up to any conservative that is talking about the bailout. They say "bailout" you say "John McCain's S&L / Keating 5 scandal cost the country $928 Billion in the 90s."

Great work Jed! Mcsame has history with banking scandals, but he has learned nothing. Mccain lives in nine glass houses, and continues to throw stones at Obama. What a hypocrite!

I have relatives that lost money on Keating 5, I will never forgive Mccain.
He was able to skate on this issue and not really held responsable. He should have had to serve jail time and barred from the Senate.

I hope Barack pulls this ace out just before the Economic debate. If this won't make McCain blow his stack, nothing will.

I don't know why people keep saying the 2000 McCain v. 2008 McCain. The 2000 McCain "Maverick" never existed, only as a media construct. If Keating 5 scandal is any indication, McCain has been consistent-- a liar and an opportunist at best, a criminal at worst.
