WASHINGTON — First lady Laura Bush said Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin lacks sufficient foreign policy experience but is a very quick study.

In an interview Wednesday with CNN, the first lady remarked that it's fortunate that Republican presidential nominee John McCain has foreign policy experience himself.

Still, Mrs. Bush said she has a lot of confidence in Palin. She said the Alaska governor has a lot of good common sense, and the first lady added that she is thrilled to have a chance to vote for Palin on the GOP ticket.

Mrs. Bush also said she thinks Palin is being treated unfairly because she is a woman. That, the first lady said, is to be expected.

Barney also tried to speak on the issue but he was muzzled.

Laura is and always has been the voice of reason in that family. Like Hillary, she pushed for programs for kids, when Bush and Cheney said NO. Laura wasn't for No Child Be Left Behind, Cheney and Bush were. She saw the problems for teachers and parents, Bush and Cheney didn't care. People joke about her bad driving, but you never hear them joke about how smart she really is, or caring. She is more like Bush's father than her own husband is. If its possible in a good way. Bush is more like his mother, sleazy, conniving, cold and uncaring. Hell didn't freeze over, she just couldn't sit back watching the American people get sucked in by a woman like Palen. Like I said, she is the voice of reason.

Stepfords are only allowed to have the opinions that their husbands give them.

Nice to see she's well tuned.

If Laura meant Palin is being treated unfairly, vis-a-vis Campbell Brown rant about it being sexist not letting Palin off the porch, then she gets a mulligan. BUT if she's continuing the narrative of "poor Sarah, she'd be fine if only they'd stop trying to get her to answer questions about the job she's interviewing for," then I hope the packing is going well at the White House girlfriend, and we'll see ya around.

Does her husband have any foreign policy experience? If he does, I can't tell...even after 8 years.

Did she REALLY say that..or is this statement being inferred?

I may be mistaken, but I was not aware that you can VOTE "FOR" the Vice-President (!!!).

"The separate ballots for President and Vice President became something of a moot issue later in the 19th century when it became the norm for popular elections to determine a state's Electoral College delegation. Electors chosen this way are pledged to vote for a particular presidential and vice-presidential candidate (offered by the same political party). So, while the Constitution says that the president and vice president are chosen separately, in practice they are chosen TOGETHER."

Browsing thru Conservative blog/websites, I see many statements of "I'm VOTING FOR PALIN because...(blah, blah, blah)..."

"Finally a woman in politics that is smart and sexy. She got my vote!"
-- Atlanta National Championship Game

While I'm sure you might be able to find a few isolated incidents, I don't see many people INCORRECTLY stating: "I'm voting for Biden" -- instead of "I'm voting for Obama"..!

As an Alaskan (of 26 years) who worked for the Palin administration until recently, I can say (with confidence) that Laura Bush is WAY off base. Palin is NOT being treated unfairly in the press (re being female) -- Palin is getting negative press because she's incompetent, biased, and has little regard for truth.

Nobody's cared what she's said up to now, why should we start caring? She's the most invisible, uninvolved, uninteresting, useless First Lady since James Buchanan's wife, and he wasn't married. At least Nancy Reagan had "Just say no." Or was that "Just do it"?

Thanks for using your office to change the world, Laura. You could have fought the scourge of homelessness, help to prevent AIDS in Africa, rallied for disarming bombs and mines the U.S. has strewn all over Laos and Cambodia. What did you do with your power? Given out a couple Librarian of the Year awards. Thanks.

I like Laura Bush but her own husband didn't know the difference between a Shiite and a Sunni and went to war with them! it is impossible to accept her judgement of someone when I look at who she partnered with.
And the whole "because she's a women" mantra is so lame. If Palin was out answering questions she would still be held to scrutiny but she might get some respect. But that's not what any of this is about.
