John McCain's campaign now wants to suspend the VP debate?

CNN's Dana Bash reports that McCain officials are "trying to negotiate with the Obama campaign and the presidential debate commission" to change next Thursday's planned vice presidential debate into a McCain-Obama affair. The VP debate would be postponed to another date.

"That is what they are proposing," Bash reported. "[McCain officials] understand very well that both the Obama campaign and the debate commission have no intention of delaying Friday's debate, but...if there is no bailout deal by Friday, McCain has no plan to go to debate."

Watch it:

Update: ABC News confirms the plan.

I know John is giving Sarah "Six School Droppout " Palin enough time to study for the big test. How the hell can you go through six colleges? Wouldn't you get yourself together after, let's say, three? Well if little Bristol's actions are any indication of the Palin family genetics, then I think I know the answer. Lot of backseat lovin' and booze!

Anyway, what's next, are we supposed to postpone the election? What is this Latin America? We have elections in time in this country because we're supposed to be the gold standard of democracy, also the people would damn-near revolt if otherwise happened. Republicans are always trying to play by their own rules, and I bet middle America has a real problem with that. Besides, can we really take ONE MORE DAY of George Bush?

A question: Since McCain and Palin are beyond redemption at this point, is the new troll strategy simply to promote apathy? "Ohhh dez candidates--they so terrible! Don't vote!"

lol

I worry very much about this election. For one thing, Bush/Cheney just do not seem finished molesting the Constitution and grabbing every last dollar out there. I worry that they are not about to let go of Republican power if McCain doesn't win it. We've seen posturing for that very scenario starting awhile back.

It's hard to imagine the uproar if this administration doesn't go when their lease is up.

On the other hand, maybe McCain and Palin feel safe not to show up to debate because Diebold has assured them not to worry.

Do not think anything is ridiculous this election. They are beneath nothing and they demonstrate it
every other hour.

Quite a protective stunt, there.

They will do ANYTHING for Sarah to avoid speaking publicly.

Could it be because she's All Hat, No Horse????

McChicken is full of sh**!!! It's a wonder he can walk!!! He's playing games, grand-standing, trying to show Barack up, & postpone the debates because he & his sidekick "Look Good/Say Nothing" Palin aren't prepared. I can't believe voters & MSM are falling for this! He's trying to appear like he "took charge", when he only "punked-out"!!

By default huh? So you haven't read McSame's policies then... Wait, that's right, they don't exist! Don't you have a bridge to be hiding under?...

AH HA! This is what it is all about...no McCain is not scared to debate with Obama...but they are scared for Palin to debate Biden...McCain old boy...it's out now. But how stupid do you think the American people are...we can see easily through these tactics. It's not about the bailout..it's about Palin bailing out of the VP debates. Yes, we knew she wasn't ready for the debate the week after you nominated her...if your camp was doing their homework...they would have know too! Your tactics are backfiring...next time you try to get a pretty-girl to replace the image of Hillary Clinton with her supporters...try a smarter person...it could have actually worked. But McCain ---you didn't do your homework. You see America doesn't want pretty..they want substance!

has made .. Mr.Lindsey reminds me of a creepy dentist.. Tapioca Man... Don't c### in my mouth and tell me it's tapioca,,, GROSS.. But it seems that what the republican party is trying to do to the American public..Political tapioca.. So now you know what I Is a talkin' about when I say TAPIOCA!!!
(my head really hurts) My pitch fork is rusting and my torch is starting to burn my hand.. But I can still yell and chant..

Not that he should get overconfident, but Joe Biden must be laughing his ass off.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 12:53 PM on 09/25/2008

Obama and Biden should take advantage of the opportunity to show they are willing to compromise. Offer to let Biden and Palin debate tomorrow and Obama and McSame can debate on the October 2nd. It would be interesting to see how the McSame camp would try to explain why they would have to refuse! It would expose this entire gimmick for what it truly is, a lame attempt to once again shield Sarah Barracuda for as long as they can. We know Joe could be ready to debate tomorow!

NO!
One does not compromise because a petulant campaigner or campaign tries to throw the entire election process into disarray just because they just woke up and realized they are in deep doo doo.
This isn't some pc kindergarten everybody gets a trophy talent show ...even tho' I'll grant you it is sometimes hard to tell the difference.

Yeah, isn't the VP supposed to be able to step in on a moment's notice if the Prez can't? Let's see if Sarah can step in, and if she can't, then she should get out of the race.

Not a bad idea. It has appeared all along that this was a way for them to keep Palin from debating. The more I think about it, the more I like it!

After listening to Palin's halting and logically tortured answers to Couric's surprisingly direct and pertinent questions, it's no wonder that the Repubs want to delay the VP debates. Palin is a complete lightwieght who has great diffiulty thinking on her feet and who falls back time and again on the well-rehearsed talking points that her handlers have been drilling into her. She comes across as almost painfully clueless. It's very dissapointing that, having decided to pick a woman as a VP candidate, the Repubs would choose someone so unqualified. There are plenty of strong, smart, qualified Repub women out there that I may not agree with policy-wise, but whom I respect as proven leaders. The inherent sexism of the Repubs comes into play here. They would rather have a small town, provincial hockey mom, easily molded, attractive, pliable, a Stepford candidate, than a strong woman who might have the audacity to think for herself.

Republicans don't like strong smart women. They just have to let a few in anyway, but they would never pick one for pres/vp

Bob Barr wants to take McDazed's place if he fails to show....
How about Matt Gonzales (Nader's Vice President) to take P's?
Who is he?
Matt Gonzalez was born in McAllen, Texas in 1965. He received a BA degree from Columbia College, Columbia University, 1987, and a JD from Stanford Law School in 1990. He worked as a deputy public defender in San Francisco from 1991-2000. In 2000 he was elected to the 11-member San Francisco Board of Supervisors, which supervises a city with a budget of $6 billion.

why do you bring this up?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 12:56 PM on 09/25/2008

With the McCain campaign's trial balloon of postponing the VICE PRESIDENTIAL debate also to some unspecified future time (maybe, never?), the claim from McCain that 'the economic crisis prevents me from debating' looks a whole lot less plausible.

Sorry John, this is simply reaching for too much - it exposes the whole ploy for the election sham that it is.

Maybe the reason John McCain is considered such a "Maverick' in Congress is that he's such a rash hothead that no one wants to work with him - so he finds himself alone. Why would anyone want to work with someone who is unpredictable and ill-tempered in both word and deed?

She is clueless. During the Couric interview you could tell from her expressions and body language ahe realizes she's in over her head. Yet, she is determined to try to bluff her way through. Finally she had to acknowledge her lack of information and promise to get back to Couric with the information requested.

Incredible - a campaign that has been suspended is in negotiation??? What exactly does it mean to suspend a campaign?

Why does McCain think that it isn't important to have a debate where the American people can see the two candidates side by side. Aren't we fighting so the Iraqi people can have free and fair elections and can see and evaluation their candidates.

This doesn't look very democratic to me! As Dave Letterman suggested (he was great last night - more politicians should cancel on him) - why suspend the campaign - why not bring in Sarah Palin? The job of the VP is to take over for the President - why can't the VP candidate take over the Presidential candidate? Wouldn't that make sense?

If the McCain campaign cannot trust Palin to take over the campaign how can we trust her to be able to take over for the President? If she's not ready for the campaign, she's not ready for the country!

You're not addressing the comment, wdw101. UpstateNY pointed out that Palin, as his running mate, should be ready to step into his shoes to take the helm. For whatever reason (maybe the McCain campaign is sexist!) that seems not to be an option they have explored.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 12:54 PM on 09/25/2008

Which means if Uh-uh-uh-bama does show up, he'll do his job as a Senator and vote "present".

McCain is simply doing what he has done for decades...serving the American people. Doh-bama is doing the only thing he knows how to do...run for office.
