Russert Uva

NBC's Luke Russert has apologized for remarks he made on the Today Show, in which he implied that students at the University of Virginia are breaking toward Obama by dint of their being smart. Here's the statement he made on First Read:

Earlier this morning on the Today Show I misspoke and made what is without a doubt, quite simply a dumb comment.

Matt Lauer talked about UVA being a smart school and whether or not it could be considered a microcosm of Virginia at large. I said UVA had a lot of smart kids and so the school was leaning Obama.

I MEANT to say that many of the kids who go to UVA are from affluent, highly educated households who are leaning Obama and hence their kids lean Obama. Plenty of smart college kids will vote for John McCain from UVA, and plenty of smart kids go to Virginia Tech or George Mason and they, too, could end up being big Obama voters.

As an alumni of the aforementioned University -- where all students express their shared bond of elitism by referring to the campus as "the Grounds" and in which students fight to live in a bunch of dilapidated dorm rooms that require them to walk outside to use a toilet -- this obviously hits me pretty close to home. Russert is right to make the correction: based upon my experience at the University (that's how we refer to it! Elitists, remember?), there are plenty of conservatives there enrolled as students. Smart ones, too! So it's just incorrect to label the school as a hotbed of liberalism...though I'd still wager the student body, on balance, will likely break for Obama.

But is it fair for Russert to imply that UVA is a "smart school?" (And is it helpful? We are after all, in dire need of a quarterback right now!) Here's a story: in 1992, on the eve of the election, I had a fellow student tell me, in all seriousness, "Let me tell you. Tomorrow, Americans are going to go to the polls. They are going to ponder their choices, think about the issues that matter to them, think about the values they hold dear, and you watch -- in massive numbers, they are going to pull the lever for Ross Perot."

Also, George Allen is a alumni. So, if we're being honest, let's face it: the University of Virginia enrolls plenty of dumbasses. (Yes, commenters, probably myself included.)

Watch Russert's UVA report ("smart" comment at the tail end of the segment):

Luke seems like a nice kid, but his only qualification to talk politics seems to be his last name. This is what is politely called a "sympathy hire".

Don't know if others have pointed this out, but you are AN alumnUS of UVA. You're only proving Russert's 'smart kid school' thesis wrong through unfortunate methods.

This will probably be one of the most ignorant comments posted on this thread but, truth be told, Luke 9/10 times will ALWAYS get a pass from me unless he goes off the deep end or something. I grew so fond and have the utmost respect for his dad ( theres like 3 news dudes I totally admire, Tim Russert, Ed Bradley and Jack Cafferty ) so young Russ can do very little wrong in my eyes and I'll continue rooting for him and his career. Hopefully, he'll show Chris Wallace how it was "Supposed" to Be!!

Jeez, give the kid a break. My daughter graduated from UVA and I am delighted, and surprised, the campus is leaning for Obama. About time they moved in the right direction.

Actually, the speaker or writer IMPLIES, the audience or reader INFERS.

And yes, it does make a difference.

What we need in this election are smart voters. I guess our smart kids would be perfect in educating adults that their future would be at risk if their parents vote for McCain.

Smart people like Biden!!!!!!!! When old Franklin addressed the nation on TV after the stock market crash Biden was watching at home eating his fruit loops! DUMB! When Palin as prick face to explain what part of the Bush Doctrine he wanted her to address Dems just on that perfectly reasonable question as proof she was not up to speed. Well what have you got to say about your vp candidate who is obviously out of touch with reality?

Now Luke has to apologize for telling the truth? When do we get to hear McCain/Palin apologize for the lies? Don't take any crap, Luke.

Oh, give the young boy a break. He has a right to express himself without being excoriated by anyone. There is nothing to apologize for...

Let Luke be.. you political basket cases.

McCain says that he has "suspended" his campaign for obvious reasons; but instead, he has "ABANDONED" it. Obama's actions have shown Americans that instead of "abandoning" us as McCain has, he will stick with us and stick up for us during this critical time. Thank you Obama!
