TRENTON, N.J. — Some residents of a northwestern New Jersey town received fliers last weekend that criticized the prospect of Democrat Barack Obama becoming the first black president. One national watchdog group said it may be the first distribution of racist fliers during the campaign.

Roxbury Mayor Tim Smith said the fliers were left at about 25 to 50 of the township's 8,000 homes. They show unflattering photos of Obama, including one that makes him look like Osama bin Laden above text that says: "Black Ruled Nations most unstable and violent in the world."

The black-and-white flier cites poverty, HIV and unemployment rates in Haiti and South Africa and says: "The United States of America will be next! Why should we seal our fate by allowing a black ruler to destroy us?"

Smith said he was sickened by what had occurred.

"It's not at all representative of our community," he said "This is a place where people take care of each other and nobody cares where you're from or what you look like."

Police Chief Mark Noll said the fliers were left in plastic bags, weighted with rocks, on lawns, driveways and in mailboxes. They are signed by the League of American Patriots, a white supremacist group with an address in Butler, N.J., about 45 minutes from Roxbury.

Telephone and e-mail messages left Tuesday for the League of American Patriots were not returned.

News of the fliers was first reported Monday by The Star-Ledger of Newark.

Noll said the incident was being investigated as a possible littering violation and not a hate crime because the group did not target certain homes.

Heidi Beirich, a director of the Intelligence Project of the Southern Poverty Law Center, which tracks white supremacist movements nationwide, said the organization has seen Internet, e-mailed threats and negative talk about Obama in the white supremacist world. The Roxbury incident was thought to be the first distribution of racist fliers during the campaign.

Obama's New Jersey campaign office also did not return a telephone call for comment Tuesday.

If these fools were on Obama's level this MAY be an insult. It's just some inbred racists doing their thing. The remnants of jim crow are alive and well.

These racist clowns are scared and would sell-out this country
to put another one of them in office. They would sell-out their families future
because they fear people of color. Yet, they support a out of touch, corrupt
old battle-ax, and a secessionist VP to run this country-
This is un-American. This is more Bush politics of fear.
This is where we stop them- OBAMA 08

I live and work in NJ, unfortunately a lot of the people I work with are racists.

And I am embarrassed by them but wont waste my breath arguing with them.

The best way to deal with people like that is by example. Be courageous...but don't think you have to engage them personally. It's useless.

Bigots are everywhere. Here in NJ they are an EXTREMELY small fringe group, and, out of frustration, noisy all out of proportion to their numbers. These days, 6 redneck pinheads could design print and distribute a flyer to that many people.

Back in 1994, one of these racist pinheads was able to get on the Democratic primary ballot in the 11th Cong district and successfully challenge to keep the other candidates off. A massive write-in vote campaign stymied him.

Of course, the 11th is straight Republican so the write-in winner lost by 2:1 to Rodney Frelinghuysen, who, in the group of 435 congresspeople ranks between 400th and 435th in both accomplishments and name-recognition. He replaced a very able and well-liked (even by Democrats) Dean Gallo who died of prostate cancer. Frelinghuysen has never come close to filling Gallo's shoes.

"Rubber Stamp" Rodney is seeing his first serious challenge this year from Tom Wyka, who's mounting his second try, this one far better organized and funded than in 2006. There's a large Latino community in the 11th just waiting to be tapped that could upset the traditional GOP stranglehold of the 11th.

I swear, i think a lot of these idiots get into racist groups like that out of sheer boredom. Life is a lot more exciting if you feel like you're part of a "movement" that's fighting an evil threat. Otherwise, they'd just be a bunch of stupid white boys who can't graduate high school.

The 'League of American Patriots' tag line below this screed made me laugh out loud. In our increasingly post-racial culture, this kind of crap is morphing from sad to comical before our eyes. Who, exactly, do they expect to convince, other than the goofs already in their camp?

I'm not worried about a klansmen or a bigot who has always and will always be a bigot, they were never going to vote for Obama anyway. I'm concerned about the so-called liberal whites, who believe that he would actually make a good President, but simply cannot bring themselves to vote for him because he's black.

That is going to be the big unknown in this election cycle. There will be people who tell pollsters that they will vote for Obama but will end up not pulling the lever for him because he is perceived to be black or of mixed race.
They call this the Bradley effect and it defeated the man of that name in California when he was way ahead in the polls.

I agree. All those kinds of folks need is a little encouragement to back up their misgivings.

This mentality is REAL. These are the thoughts that are going through A LOT of people's minds. It is FEAR of the unknown mixed in with ignorance. We have come a long way in dealing with race relations...but we still have a ways to go.

My one question to people like this is.....If what you are saying is so right, why do you have to hide and throw your message (attached to a rock) on someone's lawn? Why not be up front and try to prove your point? Prove to the American people that a Black leader is going to harm America. They rather hide like the "rodents" they are.

I just don't understand how anyone can still believe that being black makes a person essentially different than any other person. Barack Obama is no more likely to screw up as any white guy. He doesn't "think differently." He's not "genetically wired differently" than whites. That's Nazi talk. We know better...this is the 21st centurey for god's sake. It's no wonder America is stagnating...too many people in our free society are terrified to move into the future.

Some whites (I said some) would rather let this country erode economically and lose it's standing in the world than to vote for a competent individual, who has vision, wants to see ALL people prosper, simply because of the color of his skin.

It also goes to show how this country has not turn away from its ugly roots. The guy is bi-racial, yet he is labled only as "black". The one drop of black blood rule is still alive and well.
