More information is emerging about the peculiar religious upbringing of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin.

On Tuesday, progressive writer and documentarian Max Blumenthal reported on visits he had made to Palin's former church, the Wasilla Assembly of God, in late September, and the sermons of the controversial visiting pastor, Thomas Muthee.

"Muthee implored his audience to wage 'spiritual warfare' against 'the enemy.' As I filmed, a nervous church staffer approached from behind and told me to put my camera away. I acceded to his demand, but as Muthee urged the church to crush 'the python spirit' of the unbeliever enemies by stomping on their necks, I pulled out a smaller camera and filmed from a more discreet position. Now, church members were in deep prayer, speaking in tongues and raising their hands. Muthee exclaimed, 'We come against the spirit of witchcraft! We come against the python spirits!' Then, a local pastor took the mic from Muthee and added, 'We stomp on the heads of the enemy!'"

The story provides another strange ripple to Palin's religious background. As reported earlier, the Alaska Governor once credited Muthee with helping spiritually propel her to the governor's chair.

"He was praying: 'Lord make a way, Lord make a way,'" Palin recalled of Muthee during a speech to congregants at Wasilla Assembly of God. "And I'm thinking, this guy's really bold, he doesn't even know what I'm going to do, he doesn't know what my plans are. And he's praying not 'oh Lord if it be your will may she become governor,' No, he just prayed for it. He said 'Lord make a way and let her do this next step.' And that's exactly what happened."

Blumenthal, in addition to his on the scenes reporting, posts video of the sermon which Palin references (footage begins at 7:30). In it, the minister implores Jesus to protect Palin from "the spirit of witchcraft." Earlier, he states, "We need God taking over our education system. If we have God in our schools, we will not have our kids being taught how to worship Buddha, how to worship Muhammad. We will not have in the curriculum witchcraft and sorcery." He also preaches, "The other area is the media. We need believers in the media. We need God taking over the media in our lives."

The Kenyan-based minister (who reportedly started his ministry by preaching against witchcraft) has given guest sermons in Wasilla on at least 10 occasions. Palin, meanwhile, left the church in 2002, though she continued to be listed as "a friend," as recently as June. Moreover Palin, as the Huffington Post reported, recently appeared at Wasilla Assembly of God where she framed the Iraq war and even a natural gas pipeline in Alaska as tasks from God.

McCain says that he has "suspended" his campaign for obvious reasons; but instead, he has "ABANDONED" it. Obama's actions have shown Americans that instead of "abandoning" us as McCain has, he will stick with us and stick up for us during this critical time. Thank you Obama!

There seems to be a theme of territorial destiny in Bishop Muthee's (Palin's) religion:
Transformations: A Documentary Trailer, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dBvxWl7jXr0& (Bishop Muthee appears at 3:48);
Transformations II: The Glory Spreads, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6BMQm_XY6FQ&feature=related; An Unconventional War (sort of a holy war), http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Vs7If5Mrx8; Ironically, this page from Bishop Muthee's Word of Faith website, http://www.wofchurchke.org/strategy.php, sort of describes activities that could be called "community organizing": “We are already constructing a community center to train school dropouts in catering, hairdressing, metalwork and dressmaking and fashion design. Our water drilling project is now also based at this center...A Health Clinic that will incorporate a drug rehabilitation center.” I can't begin to imagine what's appropriate in far away communities that are ravaged by desperate poverty, severe climate, tribalism, corruption and superstition, but I certainly don’t see how this has a place anywhere near American government.

Are you people insane? This is the most obvious fake I've ever seen. I can't believe liberals are still falling for an obvious trap like this one. Tomorrow, you'll have the McCain campaign crowing about this all over the country.

I'd be really careful about your bluster on this one...this is Palin on tape...deal with it, along with your denial.

Show proof that it's a hoax or fake.

I actually, truly WISH this was a hoax. I've been searching the web at length to find something that says it is. I've no such thing so far. I've even found this picked up by the websites of newspapers in the UK, yet you can hardly find anything here on it. Could this actually be racism by the U.S. "free" press? Hmmm, I wonder.

The audio is just out of sync...but if you won't to deny what you are seeing and hearing with your own eyes that is up to you.

By the way I just read about this on Newsweek and the story is getting out.

whether it's a fake or not is besides the point. What's fact is fact - she's a fundamentalist who, if elected, will do her best to further blur the lines betweeen Church and State: http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/nationworld/chi-palin-religion_06sep06,0,3371419.story

So how do you justify that this is a "fake"? Because the audio and the video are slightly out of synch? That's a common occurence, and ALL media sources that have referenced this video have deemed it genuine.

It's obviously her up on stage being anointed in the Weirdo ritual. Or maybe you think it's a Sarah Palin look-alike?

slightly out of synch? Open your eyes!

Sarah, it's me Brad Hanson. I still love you girl. Please, Darlin, give up all this stuff and come back to me. We can spend our night cuddled up in front of the fire and our days out moose hunt'n.

i wonder if the voters who are "uncomfortable" voting for a black man for president will be "uncomfortable" that their great white hope, Pa-lin, has an extremist Pastor who also happens to be black.

Where is the outrage like we saw with Rev. Wright?

Outrage? Over what, a badly dubed over, "B" video? Come on...

I've been searching extensively to find out if this is a hoax, but haven't found anything of the sort yet. Please educate us and show us your proof it's a hoax. I would actually, truly feel better if it was.

And toochie50 is absolutely right: we saw total outrage over controversial statements that Obama's pastor made. Obama even ended up cutting ties with him. WHY isn't this getting more prominence about Palin? For god's sake: THEY ARE TALKING ABOUT THE MERGING OF CHURCH AND STATE -- education, economy, government.

Has anyone heard of the Constitution lately?

Sarah is a religious fanatic.

Everyone one should know John McCain was forced by the Republican Party to acept her as VP.

The Christian Coalition refused to support McCain unless the VP was a pro life candidate.

Intelligence or competance was not a requirement!

The Christian Coalition like Sarah believe the war in Iraq is Gods will, it is the Christins against

Islam with the goal beig the establistment of the Middle East as a Christian Do not be fooled byher,

she is a tool of the religious fanatics......

This is not scary to me. I grew up in the apostolic, holy roller, pentecostal, speak-in-tongues to jesus type church.

BUT, I'm not running for veep. I wonder how Americans will see this. Since she won't talk about her faith or anything else to the press, i guess people will have to form their own opinion of whether she is a politician who has faith or a loony toon.

I am not a Palin backer, but can I point out one thing about the video clip as it is on this page, before a right wing nutter does: the sound during the prayer bit seems to be looped over the actual prayer being done for Palin. The voice radically changes and the lips don't sync. It does seem, from the words, to be from the same service. But something is actually wonky about this video -- so maybe someone should look a bit more at it before we all jump on a bash-Sarah bandwagon that could crumble under our own weight.
