More information is emerging about the peculiar religious upbringing of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin.

On Tuesday, progressive writer and documentarian Max Blumenthal reported on visits he had made to Palin's former church, the Wasilla Assembly of God, in late September, and the sermons of the controversial visiting pastor, Thomas Muthee.

"Muthee implored his audience to wage 'spiritual warfare' against 'the enemy.' As I filmed, a nervous church staffer approached from behind and told me to put my camera away. I acceded to his demand, but as Muthee urged the church to crush 'the python spirit' of the unbeliever enemies by stomping on their necks, I pulled out a smaller camera and filmed from a more discreet position. Now, church members were in deep prayer, speaking in tongues and raising their hands. Muthee exclaimed, 'We come against the spirit of witchcraft! We come against the python spirits!' Then, a local pastor took the mic from Muthee and added, 'We stomp on the heads of the enemy!'"

The story provides another strange ripple to Palin's religious background. As reported earlier, the Alaska Governor once credited Muthee with helping spiritually propel her to the governor's chair.

"He was praying: 'Lord make a way, Lord make a way,'" Palin recalled of Muthee during a speech to congregants at Wasilla Assembly of God. "And I'm thinking, this guy's really bold, he doesn't even know what I'm going to do, he doesn't know what my plans are. And he's praying not 'oh Lord if it be your will may she become governor,' No, he just prayed for it. He said 'Lord make a way and let her do this next step.' And that's exactly what happened."

Blumenthal, in addition to his on the scenes reporting, posts video of the sermon which Palin references (footage begins at 7:30). In it, the minister implores Jesus to protect Palin from "the spirit of witchcraft." Earlier, he states, "We need God taking over our education system. If we have God in our schools, we will not have our kids being taught how to worship Buddha, how to worship Muhammad. We will not have in the curriculum witchcraft and sorcery." He also preaches, "The other area is the media. We need believers in the media. We need God taking over the media in our lives."

The Kenyan-based minister (who reportedly started his ministry by preaching against witchcraft) has given guest sermons in Wasilla on at least 10 occasions. Palin, meanwhile, left the church in 2002, though she continued to be listed as "a friend," as recently as June. Moreover Palin, as the Huffington Post reported, recently appeared at Wasilla Assembly of God where she framed the Iraq war and even a natural gas pipeline in Alaska as tasks from God.

This is ABSURD. Palin needs to stay in Alaska, impeached, but living in Alaska.

Whoa. Whoa. Slow down on the racial-cultural stereotyping. Just because he is black and from African doesn't make him a "Witchdoctor" -- he is a Christian who believes (oddly to me) that witches must "not be suffered to live," as their bible says. Witchdoctors are of another set of so-called pagain religions and have a purpose and respect inside their religions. Do not start denigrating people and calling on stereotypes just to bash Palin.

aside from how creepy this is, shouldn't this church lose its tax exempt status?

Well, while Wiccans will be terrified, i am sure. Most Christians will not be. This will make Palin seem multicultural and open to diverse views. A strong Christian tennet, I learned in Sunday school was "Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live."

This will shock very few.

For those that are already suspicious of Palin and her motives, this will further support any negative opinions they may have of her. Also, this could startle those that have no been exposed to this denomination of Christanity, but I'm not sure if that's her "base" anyway. I think for the far right (her base), this will not change their minds about Palin ... it actually could energize them more. BUT ... there are not many of them.

I didn't say I agreed, ajax2 (actually, and this is true, some of my best friends are Wiccans, and I'm not a practicing Christian anymore). Just stating what seems obvious from the perspective I grew up in. This will make her look good to a whole lot of people... and they'll say, See she prays with black people too...!

Unscriptural. I have never heard, nor read such a Christian tenet.

Exactly scriptural. King James Version Exodus 22:18

Like I said, not a Christian anymore, but I know my bible inside and out love. It's the scripture, which lead to the witch burnings and witch trials.

LOL why would wiccans be "terrified"? LMAO. Your ignorance about Wicca is more frightening.

So let me get this straight - when the bIack dude goes to a bIack church and hears weird stuff, THAT is the Worst.Thing.Ever. but when the WHITE person goes to a WHITE church and hear WORSE crazy things, that is "multicultural"?

LMFAO. You people are SUCH hypocrites. And r@cist. And dishonest.

What energy do YOU put into the world? I am not a wiccan but here is something for you to think about:

From Wiki: The Rule of Three (also threefold law or law of return) is a tenet of the Neopagan religion of Wicca. It claims that whatever energy a person puts out into the world, be it positive or negative, will be returned to that person three times.

It was a joke, Aleka. And I am hardly ignorant of Wicca -- you are just jumping on a few words, missing the point, and trying to create a bandwagon. Grow up and read what is written before you go off on one.

Actually, the old testament contains distinct laws against praying to false gods. By which the old testament explicitly means the Gods of other religions of the Mideast that were around at the time and that the Jewish people were exposed to.

These Gods are no longer around. In the past Christians, not knowing their own cultural traditions, have replaced these old foreign gods with pagan gods and the teachings of the old testament with their own hate of cultural diversity. In the middle ages the Church erred and embarked on a series of witch hunts which were partly politically and socially motivated. One can not say that at that time the Church was living the spirit of Christianity.

Part of that error lives in pseudo-Christian cults like the one above. But according to our own religions no true Jew/Christian is to concern himself with the religions of other people. We are not to worship them and we are not to pay attention to them, either. In no case can we resort to exorcism, which is a pagan ritual in itself!

Therefor one can not call oneself a Christian and tolerate this kind of nonsense in ones church. It is way outside of anything that can be considered Christianity.

If you were instructed about "witches" the way you claim, I am afraid, you were not brought up a true Christian but have been raised by a sect.

Talk abut killing the messenger. Blow hard all you want, the fact is that is what Exodus 22:18 says. And that is what a lot Old Time Religion types believe.

Women were actually burned as witches for centuries with this scripture as a backup. That is a fact. I cannot see how your belief or disbelief in the church I grew up in changes that fact.

They have been perverted by those that would like them to be one in the same. These are the moneychangers in the temple that Christ admonished!
