NEW YORK (Reuters) - Nobel Peace Prize winner and environmental crusader Al Gore urged young people on Wednesday to engage in civil disobedience to stop the construction of coal plants without the ability to store carbon.

The former U.S. vice president, whose climate change documentary "An Inconvenient Truth" won an Academy Award, told a philanthropic meeting in New York City that "the world has lost ground to the climate crisis."

"If you're a young person looking at the future of this planet and looking at what is being done right now, and not done, I believe we have reached the stage where it is time for civil disobedience to prevent the construction of new coal plants that do not have carbon capture and sequestration," Gore told the Clinton Global Initiative gathering to loud applause.

We need civil disobedience on so many fronts in this country and new coal plants is way down the list at this point.

Gore needs to quit being such an @$$! We know he is heavily invested in green businesses and we know he wants us to buy carbon credits so he can keep living the good life while the rest of us live in mud huts. If Gore had his way, we'd be living like they did in the middle ages while Lord Gore has a good old time in his coal-powered mansion.

Civil disobedience:.
I read about that in college. Was it Karl Marx’s Communist Manifesto ?
“urged young people” This one I remember. It was Adolf Hitler and his “Kinder Jugend”

If you had truly paid attention in college, you would have learned that the phrase was coined by Henry David Thoreau and applied by such people as Gandhi, Tolstoy and Martin Luther King, Jr.

I love how all the Sheeple think if you disagree with global warming you must listen to rush limbaugh, drive a SUV, are a repulican, etc. How limited is the thinking of todays serfs. Im so asshamed of my Country for letting itself get so dumbed down and brainwashed. My God help us. I frankly am saving to convert my large van to electric with 800 watts of solar panels on the top and a complete off grid system inside with a portable rv wind tubine and 30 batteries. I'm half the way there. Not becuase of global warming but because of pollution and because I hate feeding the oil elete and I love being independent and when things get really bad thats one less thing to worry about. Some of US still believe in the constitution and questioning everything.

Mr. Gore, you where in the White House for 8 years as Vice-President and you never said a damn word when it came to coal plants. So why this phony act now? Oh yeah, you don't like nuclear energy, either. Sorry, but you could put a damn wind mill on every block and it wouldn't be enough energy to power this big engine called America.........Hey, whatever happened to scrubbers on the precipatators and what have you? Too expensive, isn't it. Think nuclear Mr. Gore. Europe will tell you thats the way to go. And safest and cleanest.

Daddy'sCancer TobaccoPreacherChild?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jb6eMEVJ_jo

Well, I was born a coal miner's daughter
In a cabin on a hill in Butcher Holler
We were poor, but we had love
That's the one thing that daddy made sure of
He shoveled coal to make a poor man's dollar

My daddy worked all night in the Van Lear coal mine
All day long in the field a-hoin' corn
Mommy rocked the babies at night
And read the Bible by the coal oil light
And ever'thing would start all over come break of morn'

Daddy loved and raised eight kids on a miner's pay
Mommy scrubbed our clothes on a washboard ever' day
Why I've seen her fingers bleed
To complain there was no need
She'd smile in Mommy's understanding way

In the summertime we didn't have shoes to wear
But in the wintertime we'd all get a brand new pair
From a mail order catalog
Money made from sellin' a hog
Daddy always managed to get the money somewhere

Yeah! I'm proud to be a coal miner's daughter
I remember well, the well where I drew water
The work we done was hard
At night we'd sleep 'cause we were tired
I never thought of ever leaving Butcher Holler

Well alot of things have changed since way back then
And it's so good to be back home again
Not much left but the floor
Nothing lives here anymore
Except the mem'ries of a coal miner's daughter

once upon a time, the activists used to call for civil disobedience to encourage political and business action. now, business leaders and politicians are urging the activism. fascinating. it really is.

One and the same, I worry about him freezing to death in his Nashville mansion since he doesn't want to leave a carbon footprint, oh wait he purchased carbon offsets or planted trees or something...

Do people still buy this crap? FFS, The whole solar system is heating up while the Sun is cooling. Solar winds are at all time low causing radiation to hit earth and all the planets at higher levels. Now the result of that is of course much more CO2 which with other polution is eroding our ozone both
North and south, and with large holes in the Ozone the poles are melting and the oceans are warming. The warming we are seeing is a galatic event not just earth as we spin thru different regions of space in the galaxy, in this giant galatic hurricane, our solar system goes thru changes. But hey they'd love to enslave you with carbon taxes as well as the income tax, gas taxes, property taxes, etc. Wake up and quit being sheep and get educated. A lot of scientists say we are actually headed into an ice age but hey if good ole AL Gore the guy that just laid down for the neo cons when they stole the election says its so, than it must be so. Also I laff at his videos that seem very reasonable on the surface but are so overly simplistic on purpose because most people are followers and too dang lazy to do their own research. Golobal warming is being used to scam you.

So you are saying that pumping out CO2 from coal plants is not important as the solar winds are higher (which have only been measured since the 60s) and that causes an undetermined affect so we should gloss over everything else? Do you even understand what you are talking about?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 09:17 PM on 09/25/2008

"(which have only been measured since the 60s) " While we only have 30 years of recorded data from the arctic yet that's enough to go crazy over.

Correction for jay: we have only 30 years of satellite observation of the Arctic sea ice.
Thanks to Greenland ice cores we have much longer Arctic temperature records, and thanks to Arctic seabed sediment cores we have much longer records of ice bound vs ice free status of the Arctic ocean.

You can say thank you now.

There's so much non-scientific mumbo-jumbo in your post a _real_ scientist doesn't hardly know where to begin to rebut all the BS.

OK, let's begin at the beginning: The concept of "the whole solar system heating up" would require a "driver" for that, and the sun is the _only_ radiation emitter large enough and in near enough proximity to have any practical effect. Were it to do so, it wouldn't be "cooling" as you suggest - the concept is oxymoronic.

You state there's more CO2, but you don't say where or how it's created or released. Even if we assume you mean Earth's atmospheric CO2, a "heating up" Earth with a "cooling" sun would mean that there were more infrared radiation from Earth itself while at the same time there's less solar radiation overall - there's no "of course" about more CO2 from that combination, even if it were true (which it's not), because photosynthesis isn't driven by infrared (it's driven primarily by visible light near yellow).

Ground level ozone is increasing modestly in some industrial regions while stratospheric ozone is recovering due to reductions in chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and the Arctic "ozone hole" is very nearly healed.

END PART I

PART II (of II)

I pay attention and I've _never_ read or seen reference to _any_ "galactic
warming" or "galactic hurricane." And, the time it takes for the Earth's
axis to precess through a single constellation (of 12) is about 2150
years, and _vastly_ more time to move through our galactic neighborhood.
(One orbit on the Milky-Way's spiral arm is thought to take several
hundred thousand years, though I don't recall the exact number off-hand.)
Given what we know today, the very idea that there has been a significant
change in Earth's galactic "weather" the last ten thousand years is
laughable.

I'm not aware of _any_ current Earth scientists who say we are headed into
an ice age, though there was speculation about it THIRTY YEARS AGO.

The short of it is; you don't know what you're talking about. There isn't
even anything in your post worthy of finding a citation to rebut, it's so
uninformed. It is, however, _my_ field and you are simply seriously
mistaken.
