Craig Ferguson Knocks John McCain For Suspending Campaign, Compares Him To Castro, Napoleon, Caesar

I Like ItI Don’t Like It

Newly minted US citizen Craig Ferguson is outraged that John McCain would attempt to suspend the democratic process in the face of an economic crisis. In his monologue Wednesday night, Ferguson railed against McCain, saying:

"You can't suspend the democratic process because we're facing problems. At what point do you think, maybe we should suspend the election? We'll have the elections later. Some people have done that before: Castro did it, Napoleon did it, Julius Caesar did it. You can't do that. If you like it or not, the campaign is part of the democratic process....You wanna take your time off, that's fine, but you don't say we're suspending the campaign. You can't say that. It's the democratic process. We didn't suspend it for 9/11, we didn't suspend it for Pearl Harbor, we didn't suspend it for the Nazis, we didn't suspend it for the damn British. We don't do that in America!"

If you go to all the trouble to CHANGE your citizenship, there's a good chance you may have more patriot in you than the people just cruizing by on their birthright.

Plus Ferguson is smart, I don't think he's miss the point if it was about politics in Australia.

Ferguson was a Scot by birth, not an Australian.

This is an Australian accent:

That being said, you are right - if he was involved in Australian politics, he would get it.

There's no true believer like a convert.

If only we had more citizens like Craig Ferguson.

The difference is that Craig Ferguson CHOSE to be a citizen ..................... It's not something he takes for granted .................... So this is something he take seriously.

Not to say that persons born in America are not as serious and passionate about this country, it's constitution and democracy, but when someone makes a consious effort to give up the citizenship they were born into to adopt another, it is a sober moment.

Perhaps Todd Palin who wanted Alaska to split from the Union, should go live in Scotland, since Craig the Scotsman, is more patriotic about America!

Unlike Conan O'Brian, Ferguson has guts. He speaks truth to power. Conan's just decoration. All the greats spoke truth to power aside from being razor-sharp funny: Carson, Letterman, Jon Stewart, Colbert.

POW MIA? Sure, why not?!. 40% voting record for his Arizona constituents sort of gives a clue he doesn't spend much time with the other 99 Senators. If you can't chew gum and think (or apply sunscreen and debate) at the same time, do we really need this guy? Oh wait, we already know the answer to that. . . .

He's just like that communist Guiliani who tried to suspend the governor's election and stay in power after 9-11. McCane is so erratic who knows what decisions he would make as a president--AND I DONT WANT TO FIND OUT. There is no rationale to his thought processes, it's down right scary that he is running for president. Whoever supports this guy really needs to wake up and smell the coffee. This is OUR COUNTRY and it deserves better than the minimum that McCane could ever hope to give.

I wouldn't put it past him to try and suspend the election lol

John McCane, go away! You will never be president and any integrity and honor you once had is gone. You are now just a bad joke that this country has to endure for another 40 days.

What's with "hve" and "abt"?

Despite what you may think, he's right. McCain is in dire need of some time to recollect his thoughts and reboot. And what better way than to suspend everything? McCain knows he's going down the road of no return, what with the intense battle to block the media from talking to Palin. If McCain managed to suspend the debate, the VP debate would also, most likely, be suspended. Then, Palin continues to get off easy.

You can't say "country first" and then ignore what this country is built upon.

As opposed to Obama who is treating the Bailout process like a political game that's he's completely disinterested in, and will only toss out typical vague campaign slogans at. Last time I checked a TRUE President would WANT to roll up his sleeves and get down and dirty with things to make sure something was right for the people. Heck, even as just a Senator representing his state Obama should show more fire -- which he doesn't.

Then again, we are talking about a slick talking, empty suit that believes in Obama first, Country second.

yeah, people in France and Germany and cuba thought it was no big deal at the time the elections were suspended, either. What could go wrong?

Hey Donnie...get a life. He's a comedian, not a historian.

I find his take on our government very refreshing, considering it's coming from a recently nationalized American citizen.

His point is right on -- you don't suspend a campaign so that you can rush to DC for a photo opp with the prez and gain more time to prep for a debate you already know you're going to lose!

I heard McCain's staff is having a hard time finding batteries for his hidden radio transmitter. I wonder if they checked Wal-Mart?

Let him sit out the debate. It gives Obama free TV time to tell his story to the electorate.

>> Hey Donnie...get a life. He's a comedian, not a historian.

Which is exactly WHY we shouldn't take anything he says seriously.

So just WHO should be getting a life?
I think you need to go find a mirror fast...

Abraham Lincoln campaigned for re-election during a little crisis called the American Civil War. Without an airplane. And one body guard. And he wrote all of his own speeches. Now I just wish the Republican party would stop dragging Lincoln's good name into their justifications and obtuse clarifications of fear-based religious invocations. Anyone with knowledge of his humanitarianism, faith and belief in the principles laid out in the Declaration of Independence clear sees he would not affiliate himself with today's GOP.

Has anyone thought about the possibility that McSame is playing the expectations game. Think about it for a sec. As a result of McSame "postponing" his campaign, the pervading public perception now is that McSame is avoiding the debate because BO is set to clean his clocks...thereby setting the bar REALLY high for BO while significantly lowering the bar for McSame. In the meantime, McSame is prepping for the debate behind closed doors and getting ready to positively "surprise" a lot of folks. Ultimately, it makes it extremely difficult for BO to come out on top when the expectations are so high.

I've always said that Repugs are more versed in playing the game of politics than the democrats. They may NOT be good at governing, but they sure are masters of political gamesmanship.

Word to the wise...always look beyond the obvious. Nothing in this campaign happens without an ulterior albeit sinister motive/agenda. McSame is not the clueless old man he appears to be.

I freakin' ADORE Craig Ferguson. I make sacrifices to stay up and watch him, all well worth it. He has appeared on a few political shows, serious talk formats, not comedy, and has been quite articulate and very well-informed. I love that a new citizen can refresh our sensibilities about elections, democratic process etc. This guy is actually a politics wizard, has a firm grasp on our reality. I celebrate that. The fact that he is a mischeviously boyish hunny doesn't hurt either. :) ( sorry if that sounds shallow, I really do appreciate him for his brains.)

Oh, dear, you are sooooooo shallow and superficial, just like me and about a bazillion other viewers of his. ;-)

"... I really do appreciate him for his brains.)" Yes, he's very sharp, widely read, and so quick witted he's supersonic. His interviewing skills are without parallel on late-night TV. If you watch over a long period the depth and breath of his intelligence becomes apparent.

He would be a better candidate than Palin, or McCain!

Interesting that a brand new American citizen like Craig Ferguson apparently understands our democratic process much more clearly than Johnny McCain ever did.

Its a fact that John McCain is the only officer in the US armed force who never voted to give aid or comfort to American armed forces either during a war or when these brave souls are lucky enough to survive and need assistance to sustain their families and a chance for education via a GI type of bill. Does he not like the non-coms ? Is he an officer but not a gentleman ? He is a part time Senator and a full time opportunist. Are the Republicans stalling on the passage to give John a leg up and help stall the debate ? Is President Bush complicit in the stalling by asking Obama to the White House the day before the debate ?
Somewhere Rove is smiling.
