I Like ItI Don’t Like It
Mccain

When John McCain announced yesterday that he was suspending his campaign to help everyone solve the economy, and inviting Barack Obama to do the same, I must admit -- at first, I tried to think unconventionally, and I allowed myself to consider whether McCain's gesture, while almost certainly quixotic, might be sincere. Of course, soon after, I peeped the tick-tock, and learned that it originated with Obama encouraging a joint statement on the matter. For his trouble, Obama and his campaign basically got blindsided by this "suspension" maneuver. This is apparent on its face, and really should quash any suspicion that McCain's decision to suspend his campaign and inject himself into the bailout proceedings was some sort of "Country First," non-political gesture.

Of course, another clear sign that this campaign suspension is pure bunk is the fact that no suspending of the campaign has actually occurred! As documented on last night's Late Show With David Letterman, McCain's hasty exit didn't find the candidate beating a path to the halls of power, to lay hands on the nation's economy. His next stop was to sit down with Katie Couric, after which, he went...nowhere? You know, despite all the danger the country was in. Today, his surrogates have been out on teevee, in clear contravention of the suspension order. Nicolle Wallace and Tucker Bounds both appeared on MSNBC, sandwiching themselves around a campaign appearance McCain made himself at the Clinton Global Initiative. Meanwhile, at 10:00 am this morning, the actual leaders on this matter began their actual work on the bailout package. It's fair to say that they've already outpaced all of McCain's contributions on the bailout matter, even if we include the lovely set of talking points his campaign drew up for campaign volunteers to use in discussion -- you know, the campaign volunteers whose activities are supposed to have been, uhm...suspended.

But McCain is an honorable man, after all, and he is, at some point, coming to Washington, at President Bush's behest, not in pursuit of personal ambition, but of Solutions for America, right? Right? At AMERICAblog, Joe Sudbay notes that today's schedule of events casts doubt on this contention:

At 4:00 p.m., (ABC News reported via email) George Bush, whose approval rating on the economy is at 16% with a 76% disapproval, will be hosting the White House photo-op (that's what Barney Frank is calling it). John McCain will be there for that session.

Let's be clear: McCain will miss the meeting about substance. But, McCain will be there for the grandstanding.

Where, exactly, is this suspension of campaigning?

When John McCain announced yesterday that he was suspending his campaign to help everyone solve the economy, and inviting Barack Obama to do the same, I must admit -- at first, I tried to think unconv...

It's apparent that this a political stunt by McCain.I'm not shocked that there are ads airing because I saw one today, but once again it shows that McCain can't be trusted.........There must be some internal polling numbers that are causing this desperation by McCain's campaign.

Yeah, it's an old navy pilot's tactical pretend suspend maneuver. That's why he's been winking with his left eye, it's a secret signal meant to inform his minions and confuse the enemy.

"Besides, McCain has never been known for excessive caution. At the beginning of his 2000 presidential run, he would talk about his early days as a Navy jet jockey, when he and his buddies would just take off without bothering with all the safety procedures. McCain said his motto in those days was: “Kick the tires and light the fires. To hell with the checklist. Anybody can be slow."

Thursday, McCain invoked his military days again, though in a different fashion. “I’m an old Navy pilot, and I know when a crisis calls for all hands on deck,” he said.

“That’s the situation in Washington at this very hour, when the whole future of the American economy is in danger. I cannot carry on a campaign as though this dangerous situation had not occurred, or as though a solution were at hand.”

I find that man not able to accept constructive criticism ... anyone who does that, gets his awful raft (may be even physically hit) if he has lost, he's very "mad" gets devil-may-care or he punks out ... PTSD!!!

Yes, agree. He spoke that "Navy Pilot, all hands on deck" today at Clinton's event.

I thought at that time, how 360 that was from what his fellow officers said of him back in the 60's. He was a loner and rule breaker. No mention of a team effort ever.

"The bait and switch on the debate left the Arizona senator -- whose favorite campaign line is ``I'll always tell you the truth'' -- wide open to blistering criticism from his rivals.

``Clearly, this is more double-talk from the McCain campaign,'' said Alixe Mattingly, a spokeswoman for Bush. ``Pulling out of this debate at the last minute is an indication that they're pulling out of California, where McCain's antagonistic message clearly isn't working.'' "

So...if McCain was pulling out of CA then, does that mean he's now pulling out of the U.S.? Just curious.

Please see those events Obama had with Oprah.

Please see the Berlin rally Obama had.

Please see the outdoor stadium event the last day of the Democratic Convention. All they needed was Janet Jackson's exposed breast at half time. You guys are so lame.

For the McCainiacs who think "suspending my campaign" means that John McCain would just stop his appearances, please stop making excuses because he didn't actually do it.

McCain's organization said they were suspending the campaign and stopping their ads. To any reasonable person, that would mean no TV appearances for him or anyone. That is what "suspending" means. Stopping all activity.

If he meant that he personally was going to suspend his own appearances only, then he would have said that. But he said he was suspending the campaign and stopping the ads.

Once again, McCainiacs hear what they want to hear. Your guy is running scared right now and he is freaking out at every problem. He isn't acting Presidential, he is acting like a scared little 6 year old. Face the truth McCaniacs, your guy can't handle the pressure.

Suspending the campaign doesn't meean you do it conveniently.
You can't suspend the hard part - the debates, because you aren't prepared, then go on and air attack ads, take donations, and everything else. To truly show that he did this out of concern for the people, he should have truly suspended things. But McCain thinks with his wallet, so he couldn't suspend that part! ANd he is racist, (voted against MLK day) so he couldn't stop the attack ads!

What a total hypocrite. Who the **** still wants to vote for him?
I only wish more people read this site, or the NY Times.

Jeffery Tubin called the media out on their compliance with McCains supposed "suspension" Nailed Wolf Blitzer good. Tubin said that the media was again, playing right into McCains political posturing. McCain did not suspend his campaign...period. Obama is at least honest in telling the American people that he remains campaigning and he can do more than one thing at a time as a President should be able to do.....

Neither candidate is on either committe working on this bail-out...( no need to be in Washington until vote time)................This was just another political gimmick by McCain at the expense of the American Citizens....not unlike McCains Iraq war....4,184 American soldiers lost their lives thus far............we are still breathing, but our quality of life is dieing.

Yes, I blame Bush /Cheney and McCain

Lately Jeff Toobin has barely been on. He's the only one that cuts through the crap. There was one brief mention by Dana Bash that McCain brought a campaign staffer with him to the Hill and Obama brought a senate staffer. Ironic.
