Crossword

The Politico's David Levinson Wilk has a post today at how the New York Times is in the tank for Obama, because of the abundance of clues that lead, unerringly to his last name. Wilk notes that "OBAMA" has "appeared regularly as an answer in New York Times crossword puzzles," frequently to clues such as "Senator who wrote 'Dreams From My Father,'" "Presidential candidate born in Hawaii," and "Presidential candidate that Elizabeth Bumiller wants to HUG and KISS every night before falling asleep in his arms." It is TOTALLY media bias, of course!

But what about MCCAIN? Shockingly, not once has MCCAIN been an answer in a crossword in the New York Times, The Washington Post or the Los Angeles Times. No MCCAIN, no JOHNMCCAIN, no SENATORMCCAIN, not even his most recent sobriquet, the presidential-sounding JOHNSMCCAINIII.

Times spokeswoman Diane McNulty told Wilk that there is an "obvious" explanation. "It is because 'Obama' is a five-letter name that alternates vowels and consonants. It's got three vowels out of five letters, starting and ending in vowels. So it is much more crossword-friendly than 'McCain,' which is a harder word to put in a crossword." But how is it that "John McCain" has never found it's way into a Times puzzle even once? "McCain" looks right at home inside tiny boxes! Fred Thompson tells me McCain spent five and a half years in a tiny box!

The answer, of course, is that the New York Times crossword puzzle is made by the Decemberists, who should be fired so that the paper can go back to being in the tank for the "Epee/Oleo" ticket.

And McCain is NEVER the answer.
John McCain just doesn't have a clue, how could he be the answer?

Thank you NY Times! They don't want to see this country destroyed. Hell Media is usually in the tank for Repubs. Paybacks a biitch.

If McCain is an answer to a question, the question must be "Other than Alvin, name a chipmunk"

As opposed to the overt pro-Obama messages everywhere else in the NYT.

Just saw a report on FOX news about this evil liberal conspiracy (sometimes I flip over but can't watch for very long before throwing a Wii-mote at the TV). The depths of the Right's (pretend) paranoia is truly, comically staggering.

I am an avid, obsessive crossword puzzle doer. Lots of words show up frequently because they happen to be versatile for the purpose of crossword puzzles. Obama does show up every now and then; it's got all common letters and vowels spaced out. McCain is a harder word to get into a crossword. This is not a phenomenon just of the NY Times crosswords.

Well, somebody needs to. Gosh knows the media sure isn't.
MSM is firmly in the pocket of the republicans. Period.

This is very funny, but I think you are joking about "Obama" answers in the puzzle. I am one of those smart people who has finished the NY Times puzzle every day including Sunday in ink since I was in college from 1959-1960. Yes, I'm that old and I am contributing to, working for, and voting for Obama.

Why bother with subliminal messages. The NYT has been, is and continues to be in the tank for Obama. But who really cares? Ha!

Any word with a lot of vowels, such as "aerie", "ciao", or "Adlai", has a tendency to be used often in crosswords. "Obama" will be a crossword fixture for years to come.

yes, although this was funny, anyone who does crosswords knows that a crossword puzzle needs a lot of words that start and end with vowels.
