NEW YORK — "Late Show" host David Letterman kept up a verbal assault on John McCain Thursday, saying he felt like an "ugly date" because the GOP presidential candidate backed out of a scheduled appearance on his talk show.

The night before, Letterman had said McCain's decision to suspend his campaign to deal with the economic crisis "didn't smell right." Letterman substituted MSNBC's "Countdown" host _ and critic of the Arizona senator _ Keith Olbermann when McCain called him to say he wouldn't appear Wednesday.

The comic was unhappy when McCain sat for an interview with Katie Couric instead of him Wednesday _ and even more perturbed to learn that McCain didn't leave New York until Thursday.

He said he felt like a "patriot" to let McCain off his commitment to deal with the economy and "now I'm feeling like an ugly date."

"That's what I feel like, I feel like an ugly date," he said. "I feel used. I feel cheap. I feel sullied."

McCain spokeswoman Nicole Wallace said Thursday that the campaign "felt this wasn't a night for comedy."

"We deeply regret offending Mr. Letterman, but our candidate's priority at this moment is to focus on this crisis," Wallace said on NBC's "Today" show.

The late-night comic banged away at McCain on Thursday from the opening of his monologue.

"You're here on a good night," he told the audience. "So far none of our guests have canceled."

He talked about daredevil David Blaine's feat of hanging upside down in New York's Central Park for 60 hours.

"They just left the guy hanging there," he said. "It's the same thing McCain did to me last night."

He described socialite Paris Hilton _ Thursday's guest whose celebrity was once used in a McCain campaign ad to mock Obama _ as McCain's first choice for a running mate.

"Here's how it works: you don't come to see me? You don't come to see me? Well, we might not see you on Inauguration Day," Letterman said.

Noting that McCain wanted to postpone Friday's first debate with Barack Obama, Letterman said running mate Sarah Palin wanted to put off her debate with Democrat Joe Biden until after Election Day. Letterman said McCain taking Palin to meet world leaders at the United Nations was like "take-your-daughter-to-work day."

Letterman's Top 10 list was "surprising facts about Sarah Palin," read by citizens of Wasilla, Alaska, where she was once mayor.

No. 10: Palin "sometimes calls John McCain grandpa."

I would say that this cartoon pretty accurately describes McCain's campaign thus far:

Watch it. It's pretty funny.

Palin! McCain is in a VERY HARD SPOT.

Repubs are starting to say on TV that she must GO!

BUT McCain's judgement is already in question in so many ways that I doubt he can AFFORD to DUMP HER.

DUMPING HER added to his OVERALL BAD JUDGEMENTS TO DATE WOULD SINK HIM!

Besides would the AMERICAN PEOPLE STAND FOR "WALL STEET" "GHOUL"IANI and what would the "RIGHT" do with Deputy DAWG? DESERT SHIP AND NOT VOTE!

Mr. TAX Romney would be nice since he and McCain are so CLOSE!

His only hope is the debate does not focus on Foreign Affairs or Domestic Affairs.

Maybe Fishing, Hunting, and OIL would work for her.

In a democracy, a person is allowed to make choices. That being said, I don't think McCain made a good choice when he lied to Letterman. I'm not sure there is anyone who can hold a grudge as long as Dave can!!! You made your bed McCain...now lie in it and don't start whining about what Letterman is saying..You deserve it!

John's handling of the Letterman situation reminds of a child who has learned to lie.

The first lie is inevitably to get out of trouble. If it passes without notice or questioning, the child becomes emboldened and tries lying again. If he gets away with it again, lying becomes his default reaction to any situation that might present negative consequences, regardless of the severity.

After lying becomes second nature, the child will lie even when there are no possible negative consequences for telling the truth! Which is exactly what McCain did to Letterman.

Had he simply said that, with the financial markets in turmoil, it was not appropriate to appear on a humorous variety show, there would have been no downside for McCain. Instead, he lied, and his lie was far more telling about his character, and what can be anticipated from a McCain administration, than telling the truth to Letterman.

But he waited until the last minute to generate more drama for his theatrical antics, and left Letterman in a position where he would have fodder for his political humor for days, if not weeks.

As Franken entitled his book, "Lie and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them"

PEACE

Now pair the lieing with his temper and tell me you have anything resembling "Presidential".

Not even a republican can tell me otherwise...That would be a lie. ;-)

I thought those were some pretty good rips into McCain that Dave delivered on Thursday. Meanwhile, McCain did have the debate with Obama. I really don't think at this point, McCain's military service, what kind of commander n chief he would be, or Iraq is on anyone's mind. The economy is in a recession NOW and there is a gas shortage in my state (is there a gas shortage in yours?). The REAL issues to be dealt with are the issues in THIS country. Foreign policy can wait.

I don't think foreign policy can wait right now either. We do need a president who can successfully multi-task and doesn't feel the need to grandstand the way McCain does. Personally, I am not impressed with McCain's views on foreign policy. War is not the answer for every disagreement there is. We need to start with diplomacy first.

There's blame to go around for everything, I think. Each side will emphasize their own good points (whether they have any or not) and will emphasize their opponent's bad points - their complicity with causing the bad.

Both sides need to accept that they'll have to suspend at least some of their differences and work together. Given today's acrimony, it'll be tough to do. They'd better, because the alternative is a wiped out America where conservatives and liberals will be lined up together in soup lines.

Lettterman is so much funnier than Leno. And it's good to see him beat up on the old goat.

The people that think Letterman is funnier are probably of the Left persuasion and of no consequence. Most of them get their news from comedy shows. You know, like the kids. Nielsen Ratings show Leno whipping Letterman like a "red headed step child".

Oh, yeah. People who like comedy must be "libruls." Actually, those of the "Left persuasion" are probably watching The Daily Show while Dave is on. Letterman fans are probably a bit more moderate. You know, exactly the kind of voters McCain needs but isn't getting.

I can't say I care whose ratings are higher. Dave is just funnier, which is why CBS lets him do what he wants and Leno is leaving the Tonight Show.

Candidates USE late night shows for political GAIN. Where did McCain announce he was running for president? Politicians know that 70% of americans get their news from late night tv. He shouldn't have LIED. Letterman had every right to say whatever, and McCain deserves every bit of it. Now He's gonna know that it GOES BOTH WAYS. You can't just lie your way out of things. Very presidential I might add. When he says he feels like the ugly date, I really get it, because he was totally used by McCain. I had to turn off Morning Joe this morning, they were harping at Letterman so bad I had to write them a letter telling them to shut up. How can anyone defend lying?

Well, he shouldn't have lied to Dave. I know my daughter hates it when people lie to her.
