SAN FRANCISCO — A coalition of Spanish-language media and community organizations kicked off a massive voter registration drive Thursday, aiming to register nearly one million Hispanic voters.

Hispanics have long been seen as a potentially powerful voting force, but that promise has yet to fully materialize.

This campaign _ whose name in Spanish, "Ya es Hora, Ve y Vota!" translates as "It's Time, Go Vote" _ intends to change that by providing eligible new citizens with the information and the incentive they need to take part in the American political process, organizers said.

"This effort will not only put voter registration forms in the hands on Latinos, but also may help shape the political landscape," said Janet Murgia, president and CEO of National Council of La Raza.

Only 47 percent of Hispanic citizens of any race turned out to vote in the 2004 presidential election, compared with 67 percent for non-Hispanic white citizens and 60 percent for blacks, according to census figures.

The campaign's print media partner, impreMedia, will insert 990,500 voter registration cards into its publications between Friday and Monday in Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Illinois, New York, and Texas.

Community organizers will follow up with information on how to register and why it's important to vote. Their message will be reinforced by television and radio spots by media giant Univision Communication and Entravision Communications.

Hispanics traditionally have leaned Democratic, but organizers emphasized this effort was nonpartisan and intended only to increase civic participation and make the Hispanic voice heard on issues that matter most to them: the economy, education and immigration reform.

"This is neither a pro-Democratic or a pro-Republican effort," said Mike Fernandez, Vice President of Public Affairs, State Farm Insurance Companies, which helped fund the campaign." "It's pro-voting, and pro-American."

Hispanics are the biggest minority in the US and we would definitely have an impact on voting if they we all got involved. It doesn't matter if you're for Obama or McCain, but as Hispanics, we should just go out there and vote so at least others can know that the Hispanic community can make a difference.

Speaking of making a difference, AARP and the talk show host, Cristina Saralegui, have teamed up together to help spread the word to the Hispanic community about their great benefits.

Here are some of their benefits:
-Exclusive travel discounts
-Prescription discounts
-Retirement planning
-Free companion membership

Check out AARP: http://www.aarp.org

If you want to know more about AARP and it's colaboration with Cristina, check out:

http://www.upclosewithcristina.com

On the website, you can also make a customized video and have Cristina in it with you, as well as a chance to enter and win an all inclusive trip for 2 to Miami and see The Cristina Saralegui Show.

I hope you don't mind that I told you about this. I just wanted to let you know about AARP's great benefits and the video with Cristina. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me.

I read somewhere that Latinos are voting for O by a margin of 2 to 1- is that true?

Me and all my family are voting Obama--so I think it's prob'ly a bigger margin than that. He's very popular with us brown folks.

I see some Hispanics vote against their best interest too. Some guy a former Clin ton backer is on Greta endorsing Mc cain. He honestly thinks Mc cain will do more for his community....wow!

Hispanics aren't just one community. They are many different flavors. My half Mexican friend was born here and he is voting McCain.

Yeah I saw that. This guy lives in Puerto Rico and won't be voting in the general, so I doubt his "support" for McCain will be very far reaching. Don't you just love how FOX News searches out these kinds of people? If you're anti-Obama, FOX News wants YOU!

The more responses it gets, the more pennies it earns. Anything it has to say is nonsensical anyhow so why bother?

CA going Repub?? Roflmbo! See how deluded Puma(M)Ann is? See it as a FEPO; For Entertainment Purposes Only but don't respond to it. This thing is so far right-wing it's beyond redemption.

Thanks for the info. I have replied to this person to mostly mention that if she wasn't so sad, she'd be laughable. I won't bother anymore.

You are right of course, but I get so freaking mad at the idiotic posts that I impulsively hit reply - I am working on my reflexes.

The Latinos in Fl are mostly Cuban and they vote en masse Republican so I'm not so sure that can be the case.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 09:47 PM on 09/25/2008

I think they normally do have some conservative leanings, but they have nothing but disdain for McSame because of his anti immigrant views and the same goes for the Repugnicant party now.

Actually, it is the Miami-Dade Cuban-American community who tends to vote Republican. Puerto Rican-Americans(such as myself),Mexican-Americans as well as the other many Latino groups tend to vote democrat. However this year, I think even the tradionally Republican Cuban-Americans from Miami-Dade area will vote Democrat.

The older Cuban vote in FL may be going to McCain but the Hispanic population in FL is diverse. The Hispanic community is not a real fan of the Republicans after the Immigration debacle.

What??? With all due respect, what are you drinking or smoking for that matter? Clearly, you do not know what you are talking about when it comes to the Latino/Hispanic vote.

In the latest poll, Obama leads McCain: 65%-30%

http://www.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/09/23/king.battleground.colorado/

Read the 6th paragraph from the top down.

CA going to McCain? That tells me you've been drinking or smoking something.

lol You don't know very much about the CA hispanic vote if you think it is going for Mac. I agree he will likely do well in FL, but you are deluded if you think he'll even stay within 10 points with that voting bloc in CA.

Si se puedo. Lo que esta haciendo McCain es una desgracia. Este senor era un buen amigo de latinos, pero la falta de respeto que nos ha ensenado, nos deja con mal sabor en la boca. Es un sinverguensa.

I'd like to point out to Juliana Barbassa that she used multiple labels when describing the Spanish-speakers that this drive is aimed at. Hispanic, Latino, Chicano. All three terms refer to a distinct population, and cannot be used interchangeably. This is a matter of respecting a Personal Identity, and if that is of any interest to you, please correct this on future posts.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 05:29 PM on 09/25/2008

I agree that one can not use Chicano to describe a Puerto Rican, Cuban, Dominican, Argentinian, Colombian or any other who is not from Mexican abstract. But the terms Latino and Hispanic (besides the Brazilian factor) are pretty much interchangeable. As a latino(hispanic) myself, not only do I use it interchangeably, the Latino/Hispanic community does as well.

I've been told that "Hispanic" is derogatory. Is that correct?
