John McCain declared on Wednesday that he would suspend his run for the White House and return to Washington to help resolve the country's economic crisis. But while the candidate himself left the trail, the campaign itself is decidedly still open for business.

Across the country, McCain campaign offices are up and running, accepting volunteers, conducting phone banking, literature dropping and other GOTV activities. This held true on a local, state, and even regional level. The Huffington Post called up 15 McCain-Palin and McCain Victory Committee headquarters in various battleground states. Not one said that it was temporarily halting operations because of the supposed "suspension" in the campaign. Several, in fact, enthusiastically declared the continuation of their work. Others hadn't even heard that the candidate for whom they were devoting their time had officially stopped campaigning.

In Ohio, Brenda Lewis of the Greene County Victory Office seemed surprised there was any doubt that the office would be open. "Suspension of the campaign?" she asked out loud, before saying that her colleagues would be phone banking, going door to door, and could use some front desk help as well as assistance getting signs together. Similar level of activities were taking place in the state's Franklin County and Clark County offices.

In Ashland County, Ohio, a McCain worker named Ken confirmed, "We're still campaigning for him." He added, "I'm taking off in two hours. A Japanese couple will be watching the shop after, but they're very anglocized."

An official at McCain's Missouri headquarters welcomed more volunteer work. "It is not the suspension of the thing that is going on, it is a postponement," she said over the phone. "We are not shut down. Everything is still going on."

A man named David working at the Senator's office in Fairfax, Virginia, said, "We are not suspending any of our activity, not the phone banking nor the volunteering..."

The same held true in the state's Richmond and Charlottesville "victory centers."

Down in Florida, another swing state, work did not cease. An official in the "Southeast Regional Headquarters" acknowledged that "things are really quiet here" on Thursday. But, he added, "as a matter of fact, we have volunteers working in phone bank downstairs."

In McCain's West Regional Headquarters based in Nevada, an official named Alex said they still were accepting volunteers. In the Colorado Victory Headquarters, an aide said people were doing phone banking today and were "setting up to walk around Friday, Saturday, and Sunday." And in McCain's North Mountain Regional Headquarters, based in Minnesota, the offices, an official said, would be open until 8:30 in the evening. In fact, of the 15 offices the Huffington Post called, only one, Palm Beach in Florida did not have an official pick up the phone.

McCain, clearly, may be leaving the campaign trail - in addition to removing his television advertisement from the air - but the campaign itself rages on. Earlier in the day, Greg Sargent at Talking Points Memo reported that aides to the Senator had gone on cable news, Thursday, to deliver attacks against Barack Obama. Jake Tapper at ABC, meanwhile, reported that when McCain and Obama met President Bush in the White House today, it was the Republican who brought with him a campaign aide and the still-campaigning Democrat who brought along a Senate staffer.

Of course it was never meant to be interrupted. Just a different spin to it. And how about this - http://www.comcast.net/articles/news-national/20080924/Obama.Effigy/ ? Some detailed campaigning going on.

I really thought until earlier tonight, when I saw a McCain ad on television, after his campaign was "suspended" that he had pulled off another Palin. I thought he'd backed Barack into a corner, that the next few news cycles would be all about his willingness to put his country before himself, etc. But now I see that once again, John McCain was lying. What blows my mind that he isn't just lying about small things that no one care about, he's lying about big things. This isn't what I had for breakfast, it's the world economy is going off a cliff, and I need to do something about it. Which would have been really noble and cool, if it were true. I think he's he's thinking we still live in the age of telegraphs when you could get away with this stuff and no one would know until it was over.

Hey, McCain: Did you notice there are a lot of Americans on this site who have the gift of discernment. Thank God. I hope your lies revisit you in your dreams.

I think he's using the "suspending the campaign" to deflect the fact the if he wins, our real president will be Rick Davis. Davis is the one we should be vetting. He's the guy that's going to be running EVERYTHING. And if McSame dies, Sarah Palin will get no love in running the deal...Rick is going to be all over that. Suspending his campaign was a way to keep the headline from being "RICK DAVIS' of the world - the very reason we are in financial crisis." Oh and by the way a vote for McSame is a vote to put Davis in charge of the country.

McCain '08 - Redefining the English language One Word at a Time.

Today's word: suspension. McDefinition: continuation.

It was a ploy to get Sen. Obama to suspend his campaign. What a shame, and Bush joined in the scheme to get Obama in Washington DC. What equality......

Well might McCain rush back to Washington to fix the American finance system-after all, he’s one of the ones who broke it through deregulation. He’s also the fellow who told the world a week ago that the American economy was fine. On one hand, American voters can choose a man with a doctorate in law who graduated from an eminent university magnum cum laude, on the other hand, a man who was in the bottom 1% of his class-McCain. Is this a hard choice?

As for Palin, she's the one that took a town of 7,000 that was in the black and left it deeply in the red. The bridge? She was for it before she was against it as the saying goes. And let us not forget that her wacky religion views wars as crusades, she believes in healing by laying on of hands, and in driving demons from criminals-maybe she can heal Wall Street by exorcising the demons.

George Bush has completed the job of destroying US credibility and prestige in the world. What he started with the Iraq war, founded on lies and conducted as a boondoggle for Halliburton & Bechtel, escalated with the "Heck of a job, Brownie," fiasco, he has completed by destroying the US banking system, if not the entire economy. Congratulations! Four more years, anybody? I'm sure the Al-Qaida are rooting for McSame. What Al-Qaida couldn't do, the Republicans are doing quite well-destroying America.

So McCain suspends his campaign, calls off the debate (lets not have any- Hell you people don't want to know where they stand on the issues anyway) and then injects himself politically in a Republican deal to save the economy that the Dems offer to go along with- and BLOWS THE WHOLE DEAL UP...Wow...what's he going to be like as President.?? IT will be a three ring circus for sure. This guy has NO business being the President of the United States. He's not tempermentally suited for it. He is a disaster coming.

You know what McCain reminds me of that old guy you see at a really hip club. Wearing the latest fashion trying to fit in and you know, the fonzi type. McCain is all for himself and just doesn't get it . I think he lost his Maverick MoJo a long time ago. This latest fiasco didn't make me come to this conclusion.. The Palin pick did. Wow, isn't she a joke or what? What a mess.

This says a lot of what a McComb-over presidency would be like. The chief executive will say to jump, but no one will ask how high. What effective leadership he's managing to demonstrate!

Okay...so we are seeing McCain Ads in California, New York, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia...

Any others?

Seems like he didn't really do as he promised and suspend his campaign at all. And what if Obama HAD??? McCain would have continued to campaign while Obama kept to his word.

Where I come from that's called CHEATING, underhanded lying and cheating!

Ah, you see, the problem is you don't have a Republican Dictionary. In that book, it's not cheating. It's being a Maverick!

Anyone else thinking that Mac's 'cog in the wheel' was done so the deal would not get finished before the debate and he could say that 'this crisis demands his presence?' Maybe they're looking ahead to the VP debates and know that Palin is their greatest liability right now! This would provide one more convenient excuse to delay the inevitable! I really think this isn't about Mac or his polling woes...this is about her. If this election was some sort of game called 'stratigery' Mac's posturing, flip-flopping, and confusion might seem interesting, but this is not some freaking game...this isn't "to the winner goes the spoils' sir. Your BS campaign slogan, Country First, insults my intelligence, my patriotism, MY COUNTRY...OUR COUNTRY. Please, after the election is over...retire to AZ!

"Suspending his campaign?"

What's next? Is this code for McCain and Bush finding a road to "SUSPENDING THE ELECTION"?

Next week, perhaps some frenzy about the Russians being in the Caribean?

Then might Bush suspend the election with the Patriot Act now allows him to do in times of "national emergency".

Very convenient. Read this: we now have an US Army Brigade stationed on our soil... begins on October 1st.

Be aware. Be very aware.
