Men's trouser designers (Trousiers? Didn't think so.) Bonobos just launched two new pant styles inspired by the only thing anyone seems to care/talk about these days: the election. Enter "The Obamas" and "The McCains." In an email to their customers, the designers laid out their thinking:

We're fired up about the political race that's about to unfold between two formidable presidential candidates. So we brought back TWO special renditions of our best-selling midnight blue trousers. One named in honor of John, the other named in honor of Barack. The Obamas are downright amazing. The McCains mark the first time we've made a trouser so conservative that the colorful liners don't show in the back pockets and without contrast color stitching on the belt loops. We're going to keep you guys abreast of which pants are hotter sellers on our blog - we hope you are inspired to get more involved in election 2008 - as Rybo would say, "bring out the vote!"

About "The McCains":

As Wikipedia says: "While generally adhering to conservative principles, McCain at times has had a media reputation as a 'maverick' for disagreeing with his party on several key issues."

We respect mavericks, in all shapes and forms. We hope that you continue to be willing to swim against the current and lead with your best instinct rather than with the special interests that are destroying our nation.

We know you've got nothing to prove after 6 years as a POW. We know you have the heart of a lion. If the electorate taps you, take us to a higher ground.

The McCains are our first pair with a liner that doesn't show through the back: as conservative as we get. Navy outside, with a supersoaker liner. No contrast color cross-stitching on the belt loop, either. You asked for the clean cut, you got it. Check out the Obamas for more signature Bonobos flair.

Smooth brushed cotton navy trousers? You don't need much help here, but we wear them with brown loafers and belts, and we pair them with pink, white, light blue, yellow and just about any other light shade of polo or oxford shirt. It's easy to look good in our new midnight blues...

About "The Obamas":

Barack - it's more of a love affair we have with you amigo. You are young, strong and thoughtful. You give us hope for a better America, one where our President is a global citizen. As Kenneth Lieberthal would advocate, you are a man in favor of engagement, not containment.

We're nervous you'll slip into the nearsighted Rust Belt Democrat mentality - please keep markets free, keep us competitive with the rest of the world, and keep us well-educated and hard at work. A living wage and a decent health care plan resonate.

Thanks for stepping into the public life - you could have lived an easy and comfortable one in private practice and upscale neighborhoods. Yet you chose the road less traveled, the road more difficult to ply. We salute you.

The Obamas target our charismatic customers - the magnificent tile-style floral mosaic liner screams open-minded, well-traveled, gregarious. In contrast, the McCains offer this highly desired navy trouser with a quietly confident subtle finish.

I bet the Obama pants win!

Because McCain supporters are way too bright, to fall for this nonsense.

It occurs to me that the appropriate design for John McCain-inspired pants would include flames..

Whatever!

The coolest fashion of the political season comes from the brilliant New York-based designer Elektra Printz, whose Obama T-shirts capture the fresh energy of his leadership. Hey, even Madonna is wearing one!

A brief essay about Ms. Printz and examples of her work are here: http://memestreamblog.wordpress.com/2008/09/26/obama-becomes-elektra/

I understand that McCain may have given an honest answer to a reporters question just the other day. It was that silly question that has come up since the Clinton campaign. You know the one, "Senator do you wear boxers or briefs?" Without missing a beat McCain answered "Depends".

A moment of truth on the road with John McCain.

The McCain version looks like something an accountant would wear. The Obama version looks like something no one would wear - unless you were maybe a preppy closet homosexual frat boy attending Harvard. http://mespace.wordpress.com

hEY tRIANGLE,

GO GET THAT 3 CORNER HEAD RESHAPED AND GET OUT THE CLOSET.

President Obama will keep you safe so you can live a normal lifestyle instead of pretend homophobs like you calling 'folks' names.

Since there's supersoaker liners in the McCain pants, I'd guess they're very roomy in the backside to accomodate the Senator's Depends? When McCain goes crashing down in a fiery loss, Bonobos could rename them Vitters.

McCains are "Navy outside, with a supersoaker liner. "

"supersoaker"???? Uhh... is that in case he wets himself?

Not if you turn them wrong side out - vertical strips are so slimming...

Logically speaking: If McCain is celebrated as the maverick who goes against the current of his "ultra conservative" party, then it doesn't make sense that his design is the "ultra conservative" design.

Actually, it should be a bit of a confusion-ridden design, 'cos he's changed ALL the positions that he considered "mavericky".

Ouch!

The McCain's pants should have little houses, cars, lobbyists, dollar bills, and a couple of moose on the inside material and Obama's should have the people of America of every race. Now that would have been fitting.

I think the inside of the McCain pants should have been more appropriate if they were just pasty white. Stripes are too wild for that man.
