What's Up With John McCain's Left Eye?

Joe and Rob both mentioned this to me in the past week, and now several readers have brought it up. I also just noticed that Atrios picked up on this too today. Something wrong, changed, droopy or puffy with McCain's left eye. Anybody else notice anything? I just searched Google a bit more and found references to his eye being droopy in April and May of this year as well. But whatever it is, it seems to be intermittent. (McCain has had 4 bouts of melanoma, and did in 2002 have a benign growth removed from under his left eye.)

I decided to take a look at McCain's Herbert Hoover Speech, as Rob calls the economic speech McCain gave last Friday in Wisconsin, and tried to see what it was that Rob was noticing wrong with McCain's left eye. It was only a 15 second video, so I pulled it up in my iMovie movie editor and checked out each frame (see a selection of still shots above). What you see is apparently McCain's left eye more closed than this right, and/or when he blinks, his left eye is lazier, or blinks slightly out of phase with his right. Either way, it does look like something's up. Perhaps McCain has always had a bad left eye, though it's odd that so many people just noticed this week.

Stress is not good for cancers, or for Bell's Palsy, or strokes.

This man must want (need?) the presidency very badly, to put his body through all of this.

Unfortunat­ely (for him), the American public is not the "Make A Wish" foundation­.

I sympathize with him as an older man chasing his dream.

But my country's future (and that of my family) is too important to give in, to try to humor him.

Go get some rest, Senator. And give your body (mind and spirit) a chance to heal.

I was wondering if maybe some limited surgery had been done recently and a nerve or muscle had been cut near his eye. It looks like uncontroll­ed winking. Like there is no muscle control. I wonder if he had something cut out but didn't want the public to know.

I called my mom right after I saw this on t.v. This happens to my mom whenever her blood pressure shoots through the roof. She has glaucoma and needed to get a tube in her eye to relieve the pressure when this happens! It looks identical to what McCain had that day. She noticed it too! She said if he becomes president he is not going to last long! This is scary. My mom is 75 and has to be checked by a doctor every month. Can't imagine being in a position of world leader and dealing with all these medical problems too!

As a doctor, I think it's much more likely a Bell’s Palsy. This is a temporary paralysis of one side of his face. Notice that his forehead doesn’t seem to wrinkle in a normal way on the left side. This nails the diagnosis. This is very likely temporary and is not a stroke, but he will have a temporary paralysis of his face. Look for his left eye to tear and look red if not patched (no normal blinking). His speech may sound off because the left side of his mouth won’t work properly. He may drool from the left side of his mouth and be unaware of it.

I read this article yesterday and now every time I see McChicken on TV I really notice this. He also blinks ALL the time, but I thought that was because every word that comes out of his mouth is a l ie.

After seeing Pa lin's interview w/ Couric his obvious poor health is even more frightenin­g!

Poor John the man "Lies" so much he has to keep one eye open when he sleeps looking out for his Conscious trying to "sneek" up on him. Its a "Shame" when a man tries to run "But just can't hide ' from himself.
