What's Up With John McCain's Left Eye?

Joe and Rob both mentioned this to me in the past week, and now several readers have brought it up. I also just noticed that Atrios picked up on this too today. Something wrong, changed, droopy or puffy with McCain's left eye. Anybody else notice anything? I just searched Google a bit more and found references to his eye being droopy in April and May of this year as well. But whatever it is, it seems to be intermittent. (McCain has had 4 bouts of melanoma, and did in 2002 have a benign growth removed from under his left eye.)

I decided to take a look at McCain's Herbert Hoover Speech, as Rob calls the economic speech McCain gave last Friday in Wisconsin, and tried to see what it was that Rob was noticing wrong with McCain's left eye. It was only a 15 second video, so I pulled it up in my iMovie movie editor and checked out each frame (see a selection of still shots above). What you see is apparently McCain's left eye more closed than this right, and/or when he blinks, his left eye is lazier, or blinks slightly out of phase with his right. Either way, it does look like something's up. Perhaps McCain has always had a bad left eye, though it's odd that so many people just noticed this week.

He doesn't look well, and there is something strange about his eye. Maybe his campaign is afraid that he will have a "Nixon Moment', where the other guy, Obama, will look so much better in comparison. People will wonder if he is seriously ill or had a stroke. I'm pretty sure that is not the impression that his handlers want the public to get.

I'm thinking he may have had a stroke. That's the way it looked to me. But, it could be that he's having some kind of reaction to a medication. Either way, it appears that he's having problems with that eye. Maybe he's having trouble seeing out of his left eye and he can't read a teleprompter anymore, so that's why he decided to "suspend his campaign" because he can't possibly be asked to remember where he stands on issues! God forbid! I've noticed his jowls are more prominent now, too. Is that melanoma coming back? And someone else mentioned his eyes being completely dilated. I noticed that too. His eyes look dead, don't ya think? He may be taking some kind of medication that makes your pupils dilated. No matter what the cause of all his bizarre facial phenomena, he needs to come clean and release his medical records. How selfish can you be to put the country you supposedly love so much at risk by deceiving the American people!

He wants to bump the VP debate off the calendar. If he doesn't debate tomorrow he will try and get it rescheduled for next week in place of the VP debate. He is terrified of having Palin debate. She's not ready for primetime even after intense studies for a month.

McCain should seek medical attention to rule out a Tia, small stroke. If he hasn't always had a problem with that eye, it could indicate a larger issue looming in the background. His age, not his politics, strongly suggest that he should get checked out by a doctor because he is in stroke territory. One does not have to lose their speech or memory to be said to have had stroke because any small symptom can be a warning shot that something worse is coming.

I seriously think McCain looked unwell last night during his announncement. His face was sunken in and his left eye would not open all the way. He just looked very sick. My husband thought that he may have had a stroke. I am thinking that the republicans are freaking out because McCain is unwell and the last thing they need right now is to have it surface that he is sick and physically unable to debate. He is an old man who has had several bouts of cancer and was clearly unwell during his announcement. I think that this is what his whole thing is about. There is no other reason for his behavior unless, of course, he really is just completely insane.

The left side temple, next to his eye, is where McCain had a type II basal cell carcinoma removed -- a VERY aggressive cancer.
Might it have returned and be spreading?

there was just an campaign advertisement on MSNBC about McCain releasing his medical records and they showed the scar after his operation and it was right by that same drooping eye. Hey I'm beginning to feel sorry for the guy - with cancer I think he should just lay back and enjoy life and not get involved the rigors of campaigning - plus every president I've seen in my lifetime leaves with gray hair from the stress of the job. He should just get out and retire!

I am a physician and it looks like McCain really is through dealing. Makes me think the whole charade of the 4700 billion dollar bailout is just subterfuge to hide McCains affliction. They called Obama to the White House to tell him the news. McCain is through

I noticed the eye thing yesterday - dropping and lots of blinking. I've also been wondering, for awhile, why his left cheek is so much more prominent than his right. It looks like he's got a tumor. But maybe it's bad plastic surgery. Before the campaign started he looked older and much thicker around the neck and cheeks. It could be weight loss, great makeup, or something, but I'm continually surprised by how much younger/better (besides the lopsided face and weird eye) he looks.
