What's Up With John McCain's Left Eye?

Joe and Rob both mentioned this to me in the past week, and now several readers have brought it up. I also just noticed that Atrios picked up on this too today. Something wrong, changed, droopy or puffy with McCain's left eye. Anybody else notice anything? I just searched Google a bit more and found references to his eye being droopy in April and May of this year as well. But whatever it is, it seems to be intermittent. (McCain has had 4 bouts of melanoma, and did in 2002 have a benign growth removed from under his left eye.)

I decided to take a look at McCain's Herbert Hoover Speech, as Rob calls the economic speech McCain gave last Friday in Wisconsin, and tried to see what it was that Rob was noticing wrong with McCain's left eye. It was only a 15 second video, so I pulled it up in my iMovie movie editor and checked out each frame (see a selection of still shots above). What you see is apparently McCain's left eye more closed than this right, and/or when he blinks, his left eye is lazier, or blinks slightly out of phase with his right. Either way, it does look like something's up. Perhaps McCain has always had a bad left eye, though it's odd that so many people just noticed this week.

Not necessarily. It could indicate a TIA or other brain problem, if not associated with the cancerous growth that was removed from under that eye.

I think that more paid temporary McCain staffers are doing blog posts today instead of letters to the editor. They'll shift some of the manpower back to the letters once the heat dies down.

Corporate America will do everything it can in its Presidential Power, with ally G. W. Bush, to prevent this year's election. Recently, RNC nominee McCain fired his makeup artist... I suppose because she was unable to cover up the Truth well enough.

The next time we see RNC nominee McCain, he may just have been embalmed by the lie...

I wish him well also. I also wish that if he's going to have a stroke, he has it before the election, not just so voters know but also so the Rs could nominate someone more likely to survive his term. Winning by having someone disabled sucks. Losing to someone who isn't going to be the real person occupying the White House anyway also sucks.

I hadn't noticed the left eye, but I have been asking about McLeft-LockJaw for months. What's up with his left jaw? It's huge! It seems like it gets bigger every time he lies.

What I am concerned about - not to lessen or dismiss the lazy eye issue - is the clear pattern of problems with attention, memory and coherence. Having had a relative with dementia I can recall the early stages of the disease and I see a scary pattern in Senator McCain. Perhaps I'm wrong, but his carefully guarded access to his medical records raised my antennae. I thought that the age issue could be easily swept aside with a glowing medical history, but he did just the opposite - he obfuscated. Add to this the self awareness issue plus now the lazy eye syndrome and his candidacy becomes more than problematic. Specifically, we need to find out if he's had a stroke recently.

If there is a serious problem in his medical records I doubt that he would have let reporters look at his records at all -- even for three hours eyes-only. Too much risk that one of them would spot it.

Nice try alan7388, but as far as I know NONE of the reporters were qualified doctors. Next time take a look at your own medical records or even a prescription form and the first thing you will notice is the sloppy handwriting and the extensive use of professional symbols and gargon. The medical records COULD have said that McCain was a hermaphrodite and I'll bet it would be buried so no one IN THREE HOURS would trip over it. BTW why restrict the viewing to only 3 hours for literally thousands of pages of records AND are you convinced ALL the records were there?? Sorry, it does not pass the laugh test.

It's not just the eye, it's the whole left side of his face. There is a growth on the lower part of his face at the jaw line. COMPARE PHOTOES from the beginning of the campaign to the ones that were taken yesterday. There is a difference you can see at the jaw line. Will someone please take him to a doctor before we are stuck with Palin who just met her first foreigner.

Anyone see the Time mag cover a couple weeks ago of him in close up? He has a cataract in his right eye, I can't believe they didn't see that when they shot it.
