Media Matters:

Here's MSNBC's Chris Matthews, moments ago, suggesting Barack Obama is "elite" in part because Obama was wearing sunglasses:

Can Barack Obama, a man of elite education if not elite background, break into the middle class and talk regular? Can he talk to regular people in their kitchens tonight, in their living rooms?

[...]

Everybody thinks Barack is too cool. In other words, there he is with the shades, getting on the plane. A little bit too elegant, a little bit too proud of his own bearing. Is that a problem, that he's just too cool for words. In other words, elite.

I've been watching Chris Matthews for years, and he's has been tossing out flubbs for quite a while. But lately his flubs are down right wrong. MSNBC is on the line for this, because they've been getting the all the complaints. Activists, bloggers, commentators, viewers, you name it, are all a buzz with his on air commentary lately.

Including his recent coverage of the presidential debate Friday in Mississippi. I was so upset the other night I researched his past broadcasts and comments...wow. There are quite a few places that are keeping track. http://mediamatters.org/action_center/matthews_monitor/ is just one.

I don't know what is wrong with him, but he seems to be getting worse. Perhaps it's something organic and need medical attention. Or maybe he's just lost his professional compass and needs to retire with some dignity. All I do know is, if we don't DEMAND better media, we won't ever have it.

So, turn the channel, or get involved and write to the MSNBC. Either way, it certainly won't get better if WE don't make it better! Sorry Chris.

Let's see, Obama was elitist because he ordered orange juice at a diner, because he doesn't bowl particularly well, and now because he sometimes wears sunglasses. In the words of the late, great Molly Ivins:
This. Is. Insane.

I drive a school bus, but by Mathew's assertion I must be a real elitist because I wear prescription polaroid sunglasses all the time. Mathews is one of the best news guys, but that was a touch foolish. In the very least, in the future, Mathew's must consider his characterizations a little better before spewing them. The truth is common working class folks wear sunglasses more frequently than the wealthy because we are more often in conditions that require their use. I think Chris Mathews is great, but he definitly had a Bill O'reilly moment there. I wonder if Olbermann will slap his buddy on this one.

I WISH he would say something like that to Chris Rock, who I consider to have the best comeback lines for ignorant questions. WHICH would be, ahem, "Are you saying that because Obama is black?!" Listen up people, "Too cool" for Matthews means Obama doesn't know his place and is uppity or to be more PC, elitist, I suppose. It's absurd. Matthews canNOT get around the fact that Obama is black and has to mention it in subliminal ways ALL the time. Guess what, Matthews, it's obvious so get over it.

I can't believe how elitist I am (putting on shades to drive somewhere)

Chris Matthews is trying to over compensate for having said he 'felt a tingle up or down his leg when Barack spoke'. Now his mission is to be overly "objective" in his analysis of Barack, which is leading to his foot in mouth disease of recent.

Shut the f*ck up, Chris Matthews.... Good lord - wearing sunglasses makes one "elite" ?

What has happened to MSNBC? With the exception of Olbermann & Maddow, these guys are so scared of being accused of left-wing bias it seems like they go out of their way to give credence to McCain talking points. Their analysis after events like this is not over what happened, but always about what Obama didn't do or where Obama failed, & they let Buchanan bully his way around.

Have these guys lost their spine?

It's called confidence, Matthews. Stop pretending to be one of the regular folks and act like the multi-millionaire you are.
