Media Matters:

Here's MSNBC's Chris Matthews, moments ago, suggesting Barack Obama is "elite" in part because Obama was wearing sunglasses:

Can Barack Obama, a man of elite education if not elite background, break into the middle class and talk regular? Can he talk to regular people in their kitchens tonight, in their living rooms?

[...]

Everybody thinks Barack is too cool. In other words, there he is with the shades, getting on the plane. A little bit too elegant, a little bit too proud of his own bearing. Is that a problem, that he's just too cool for words. In other words, elite.

truly, does chris matthews get paid for such nonsense?
obama removes his sunglasses within 30 seconds of stepping out of the vehicle
why couldn't matthews point out that obama always carries his own luggage...
when has anyone seen mccain doing that?

Jimmy Carter did carry his own luggage but he did not look so cool doing it. Chris Matthews is a loud mouth jerk who has a TV show that quite a few folks tune into. My aggravation with this nonsense is that, well it is nonsense and wastes my time. Who cares if Obama looks cool? I'd rather a cool looking President than one that has no real acquaintance with the truth.

P.S. Chris...shorts don't care who wears them.

Chris is just jealous that Obama look so good. Don't hate the player, just hate the game. Chris Mattews should go to doctor and ask can they remove some of the slobber that he seem on the verge to droll every time he talk. I got advice for Chris try using a napkin so the spit won't fall out your mouth while you a spewing your nonsense.

Not only are sunglasses protection against uv rays and sun, but allowance for the eyes to relax before the debates, on stage with lighting; at 47, Obama like the rest of us is probably experiencing presbyopia and was using the sunglasses to rest his eyes. Chris Matthews, he really knows not what he talks about.

I was speaking to a homeless veteran a few weeks ago, he was wearing sunglasses!

He looked cool, but it sure didn't make him elite!

Chris Matthews is a democrat in republican-skin/clothing. He's complaining about Obama looking too cool because he's wearing Sunglasses and Chris himself is pictured in the link below wearing sunglasses. Talk about double-standard. What is good for the goose is good for the gander.

Please remember Chris Matthews recently got his comeuppance from his network a few weeks back. I think that he is trying to recover from that frontal assault accusing him of being in the tank for Obama. The pendulum is swinging in the opposite direction now. Self preservation?

Senator McCain's refusal to look at Senator Obama during the first Presidential debate was rude and uncalled for. He showed his disdain for a Presidential candidate who earned the right to be there on the stage with him. Any one of any race, ethnicity, or walk of life who has experienced racism and/or discrimination probably took this as personally as I did. McCain's attitude was disheartening, DISRESPECTFUL, and disgusting. It nauseated me as a put myself in Senator Obama's place where many of us have been, treated like we didn't belong or as undeserving. As a first generation American I can tell you that many of us (minorities, especially non-white minorities) have often wondered when will be ever be deemed as worthy by all. Then here is Obama, first in his class at Harvard law, university professor, State Senator, US Senator and Presidential candidate and McCain refuses to extend him the basic human courtesy and respect of LOOKING AT HIM. If we give McCain the benefit of the doubt and say that it wasn't ,heaven forbid, racial, then it's just as scary that he treats anyone who disagrees with him like something stuck on the bottom of his shoe. This is not acceptable in a candidate for President no matter what the motive. He dismissed and belittled Obama all night with body language, which often speaks louder than words and we got the message: John McCain is not worthy to be President of the United States.

mccain has always shown this kind of crass behavior toward others
he's simply ill-mannered and has been so from childhood
at 72 years old he still hasn't learned one of the most basic lessons of life

People talk about Obama being elite, but where is the scoop on McCain being almost last in his class at a prestiges school because of his partying.

Senator O*bama was not first in his class at Harvard. You are probably referring to him being the first Black President of the Harvard Law Review.

Yes, he was in the top 10% - manga cum laude but not first.

Matthews has a bee in his bonnet about trying to portray Obama as Adlai Stevenson. At the same time he's really uncomfortable about talking about an African American and frequently uses terms like "cool" to describe Obama.

It is unbeleivable the stuff you hear out of Mathew's mouth sometimes. Talk about giving out soundbites to potray himself as out of touch. I think middle america is frankly tired of the whole media pushing this elitism idea - like somehow the media thinks middle america wants a sort of dumbed down candidate. They have barely ever mentioned education of the candidates - do they think we in middle america and middle class think being educated is a negative while we fight to send our kids to college.

Try this Chris - do a segment comparing the education of Sarah Palin with barack Obama - both newcomers to the scene without describing higher education as "elite". Describe it as what we need to compete!

Compete not Elite - I like that.

That wasn't Matthews' only gaffe last night. First, he took McCain to task for the idiotic moral to the story about the bracelet he wears in honor of a serviceman killed in Iraq, namely, that we have to stay in Iraq indefinitely to ensure that the serviceman "did not die in vain" -- certainly a useful observation by Matthews. But apparently he did not listen to Obama's response to McCain's anecdote. In fact, Obama's response was that he too wore a bracelet for a similar purpose at the request of another bereaved mother whose request was that Obama ensure that other mothers not suffer what she was suffering. Then Obama noted that no serviceman who dies in battle "dies in vain" because he died serving our country, and we honor all who do so -- a perfect and very moving response to McCain's shameless use of the death of a serviceman to bolster his political position.

Either Matthews was so enamored of his own response to McCain's remark that he was busy writing it down instead of listening to Obama's response, or he is so fixed in his opinion that Obama is too much of an intellectual that he doesn't even recognize it when Obama makes an emotional connection to his audience.

He is really enamored with himself, he really is a chortling savant. I wouldn't want to be sitting in front of him as he talks because I might drown from the spittle.

Chris Matthews often says stupid thing that he can't explain
like "why don't i look that good in sunglasses", "I wish I was that cool.."
Matthews means well, and in his own way, like many americans,
is trying to express good things, yet dosen't know how-
At the end of the day Matthews has a good heart, and we all make mistakes...

Truthfully, Matthews sounds envious. Like he either wants to be friends with Obama, or wants to be Obama.

See, Chris has one of those third eyelids that slide into place, like a reptile's, when he's basking on rocks in the sun. He doesn't understand why anyone needs sunglasses.

He’s 61 years old. He’s is not a liberal. His views tend to be conservative leaning. His bother is a Republican congressman. He Rendell’s boy and Rendell have no problem telling everyone about the racial divide. I'm not saying either is racist but there is a sadness to their thinking. These are the old guard watching the world change and not happy about it. Change isn't easy for everyone but they need to get the h3ll over it.

I sincerely don't think Chris Matthews has a racist bone in him, but being White, with his upbringing in the "ethnic" neighborhoods of the "regular" working class Whites, he just doesn't understand, how what he says come across. He means well, and I have heard him say things that I know, he's not a racist or jealous and does understand the Black experience and the subtlety of prejudice and racism; he's just White, and sees life through those experiences and expect others to do so too. It’s seems contrary but I understand what he goes through. You are who you are. It’s the rare White person who can truly get out of him/herself and understand totally how it is to be a minority in this world.

What a ridiculous comment, Chris. PS - McCain wears sunglasses too, OMG! He also looks like Mason Verger from Hannibal in them.
