GREENSBORO, N.C. — Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama on Saturday called Republican rival John McCain out of touch with middle-class Americans, telling supporters that the GOP senator never once uttered the words "middle class" during their first debate.

"Through 90 minutes of debate, John McCain had a lot to say about me, but he didn't have anything to say about you," Obama told a cheering crowd at the J. Douglas Galyon Depot in downtown Greensboro. "He didn't even say the words 'middle class.' He didn't even say the words 'working people.'"

Obama debuted his post-debate attack on McCain with a campaign swing through North Carolina and Virginia, Republican-leaning states where he thinks he can make inroads.

The Illinois senator is trying capitalize on his debate performance by taking McCain to task for not talking about any plans for helping the middle class in the midst of the country's financial and fiscal crisis.

"Just as important as what we heard from John McCain is what we didn't hear from John McCain," Obama said. "We talked about the economy for 40 minutes and not once did Sen. McCain talk about the struggles of middle-class families. Not once did he talk about what they are facing every day here in North Carolina and across the country."

Watch Obama's ad on the debate:

McCain's campaign suggested Saturday that the Arizona senator had referred to the middle class during the debate when he argued that Obama had voted in favor of higher taxes on families making $42,000 a year and proposed hundreds of billions in new government spending that would place a crushing burden on families and businesses. Obama disputed both of those assertions and said that 95 percent of America taxpayers would not pay more in taxes under his plan.

"If he was honest, Barack Obama knows he was unable to debate the merits of supporting higher taxes on the middle class, and bloated government spending during a looming economic crisis _ it simply proved indefensible last night," McCain campaign spokesman Tucker Bounds said in a statement.

Story continues below

Appearing with Obama on Saturday, running mate Joe Biden called McCain's judgment on every important issue "wrong."

"Last night, John McCain's silence on the middle class was deafening," said Biden, a Delaware senator. "We need more than a brave soldier. We need a wise leader."

The Obama campaign tried to back up that point in its newest ad, a spot released Saturday that also notes McCain never mentioned the middle class during the debate. "McCain doesn't get it," the announcer says. "Barack Obama does."

"We need a president who will fight for the middle class every day, and that's what I will do when I'm in the Oval Office," Obama told the cheering crowd.

Obama advisers were encouraged by his performance in the foreign policy arena at the debate at the University of Mississippi but immediately started dampening expectations for future debates.

"This was supposed to be John McCain's turf, and Barack Obama owned it," Biden said.

Obama adviser David Plouffe told reporters the Democrat "spoke really to people in their homes about needing a president who is going to fight for the middle class, who is going to work on things like education and health care."

The presidential hopefuls are scheduled to debate twice more, at Belmont University in Nashville on Oct. 7 and at Hofstra University in Hempsted, N.Y., on Oct. 15.

The next debate will be a town hall format, and Plouffe called McCain the "undisputed town hall champion."

Normally when one male refuses to look at another male, isn't that a sign of submission to the more dominant male? Maybe McCain just knows he doesn't have the goods. He sure looked uncomfortable.

Um, the same way that he could not look Obama in the eye throughout the 90+ minute debate, is the same manner that McCain cannot acknowledge a Middle Class, and thusly will not talk about us nor look us in the eye. Because to McCain, we do not and should not exist.

Look at their tax plan to see how much/little they each help middle class:

If you earn over $603,000 per year
J.M. cuts your taxes -$45,361 ($872.32 more each week)
B.O. raises your taxes +$115,974 ($2,230.26 less each week)

If you earn $227,000-$603,000 per year
J.M. cuts your taxes -$7,871 ($151.36 more each week)
B.O. raises your taxes +$12 (23 cents less each week)

If you earn $112,000-$161,000 per year
J.M. cuts your taxes -$2614 ($50.26 more each week)
B.O. cuts your taxes -$2204 ($42.38 more each week)

If you earn $66,000-$112,000 per year
J.M. cuts your taxes -$1009 ($19.40 more each week)
B.O. cuts your taxes -$1290 ($24.80 more each week)

If you earn $38,000-$66,000 per year
J.M. cuts your taxes -$319 ($6.13 more each week)
B.O. cuts your taxes -$1042 ($20.03 more each week)

If you earn $19,000-$38,000 per year
J.M. cuts your taxes -$113 ($2.17 more each week)
B.O. cuts your taxes -$892 ($17.15 more each week)

If you earn under $19,000 per year
J.M. cuts your taxes -$19 (36-cents more each week)
B.O. cuts your taxes -$567 ($10.90 more each week)

J.Mc. will double deduction for dependents to $7000 per child. That's a HUGE tax break for families.

Since I earn less than 112k and applying a little vested self-interest, I get a higher tax-break under Obama than McCain therefore I should vote for Obama. That is your point, right?

From your previous comments, I was under the impression you did not support Obama. Thank you for clarifying the tax plan argument for me.

Mccain will also tax you healthcare premiums over 5,000 for families
an 2,500 for single filers.
Sum pay 900 per month for this necessity. Since WW II this has been a tax Deduction from earned income..all of it a deduction. fro everyone.
An extra you pay will be a Taxable Event under the Mccain Plan.

Thanks for the info. Few people realize that if you make somewhere between $112,000 and $161,000 you'll enjoy bigger tax cuts under Obama than McCain. Even at $603,00 your taxes barely go up under Obama.

It is unfortunate that aside from the jabs from both sides there was no real insight from any of the two candidates about how they are going to go about to solve this crisis. I was really disappointed in the debate because of this fact and wish they tackled real solutions rather than just trying to outdo one another.

What are they going to say? There is not much you can do... Help out the banks with the bad loans so the whole thing doesn't crash and put back in place the regulations that will prevent it happening again. Which is what is being done in congress right now. There is not much else they can do, the mess has to ride it self out from there on. Obama plans will get this economy moving again with creating millions of energy jobs over the next ten years, and cutting health care cost. Those are the things that will get this economy moving again. When the middle class is doing well (92'-99') the economy is doing well when the top 5% is doing as well (00'-08') as they were something is fishy. Meaning there cheating for money, but its also common scene yes there scumbags but when you put millions of dollars on the ground some people in the room will pick them up no matter what the consequence.

Poor is poor. Obama is running for the President of all people not just black people. If he fixes schools, clamps down on predatory lending, gets affordable medical coverage, and allows students to earn their college tuition through community service--who do you think these policies will benefit the most? Don't be so selfish and short sighted.

Housing giant dropped meeting with McCain adviser

By PETE YOST – 7 hours ago

WASHINGTON (AP) — Last March, a consultant to Freddie Mac arranged a meeting between the top economist in John McCain's campaign and Hollis S. McLoughlin, a prominent Republican and top executive at the failing housing giant that is central to the nation's credit crisis.

The scheduled meeting with McCain economic adviser Douglas Holtz-Eakin never took place because a number of Freddie Mac executives objected that it would have been inappropriate, according to three people familiar with the episode.

The executives pointed out to McLoughlin that there was no such outreach to the campaigns of Democratic candidates, said the three people, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

The consultant who arranged the meeting, Harry Clark, is the founder of a Washington lobbying firm.

Out of a special account that McLoughlin controls, the Freddie Mac executive has been paying Clark more than $10,000 a month. McLoughlin has been using the same account to pay $15,000 a month to the lobbying firm of Rick Davis, McCain's campaign manager, according to the three people.

Just like Bush, McCain doesn't like being around people who disagree with him. I believe he might also feel guilty about taking stands that he really doesn't believe in.

I noticed it. I also watched as Obama continued to attempt eye contact with McCain up until their handshake ended and McCain turned away. Even more distressing is at the end and the Obamas crossed the stage to shake hands with the McCains but there was a half attempt and still very little contact. McCain act as though he didn't want to shake hands or acknowledge Michelle Obama.

I heard Pat Buchannan state that McCain doesn't like Obama and he (McCain) has nothing for people he dislike. If that is true then it is a horrible disposition to have for someone running for president that will meet many people he may not like. However to dismiss them out of hand shows a level of disrepect that is distressing. McCain doesn't even try to hide his disdain. That is a character flaw that can't be repaired especially when he doesn't recognize it a poor taste.

Rick Davis Busted: $971,860 In Web Consulting Fees

Newsweek is reporting that Rick Davis took deferred compensation, funneled into his lobbying firm shop, and was racking up huge fees for a related business run out of the same address.

The McCain campaign told reporters the fees were irrelevant because Davis "separated from his consulting firm ... in 2006," according to the campaign's Web site, and he stopped drawing a salary from it. In fact, however, when Davis joined the campaign in January 2007, he asked that his $20,000-a-month salary be paid directly to Davis Manafort, two sources who asked not to be identified discussing internal campaign business told NEWSWEEK. Federal campaign records show the McCain campaign paid Davis Manafort $90,000 through July 2007, when a cash crunch prompted Davis and other top campaign officials to forgo their salaries and work as volunteers. Separately, another entity created and partly owned by Davis—an Internet firm called 3eDC, whose address was the same office building as Davis Manafort's—received payments from the McCain campaign for Web services, collecting $971,860 through March 2008.

1. STOCK MARKET CRASHED UNDER REPUBLICAN HERBERT "SUPPLY-SIDE ECONOMICS" HOOVER, and.

2. The RESULT of that Crash was the GREAT DEPRESSION?

Roosevelt was elected WHILE THE GREAT DEPRESSION WAS CONTINUING -- therefore it is obviously correct to say that Roosevelt was elected DURING the Great Depression.

Of course he gets it. He gets that the middle class takes care of the poor and the rich.

Breaking the backs of the middle class is equivalent to breaking what America stands for-the ability for anyone to prosper-to have home, educate their children. The middle class is the reason we are not a third world country.

Also, they were given 90 minutes to debate and the discussion was suppose to be about foreign policy. Everything is not going to get discussed in one debate.

There are more than 40 million poor people in this country, it has to be discussed.

Why would he put them in a category that is demeaning on its face. All these categories: poor, working class, walmart moms, blue color workers, working stiffs, etc are just that categories. The categories don't negate the fact that ALL those people have something in common. They all want to take care of their families. People just want to be treated fairly and know their concerns matter. That of course starts with politicians such as: congress men and women, representatives, mayors, governors, and presidents acknowledging there are serious issues. Everyone has a hand in it.

What strikes me odd is Sen Obama is suppose to mention poor, poverty, or working class but Sen McCain is excluded from doing the same? He's running for office too for ALL people and not just a select FEW (or is he)?

The Daily Kos didn't have any trouble pinning McCain to GW Bush, why did Obama.

John McCain plans to reign in out of control and balance the books; after shortchanging the Treasury by half a trillion in tax giveaways for the super rich; after blowing 200 billion a year or more in Iraq for the next century, after allowing Halliburton and Blackwater to run barefoot through piles of cash, after losing hundreds of billions more that could be saved by negotiating in Medicare Part D gifts to the drug industry; after handing Wall Street bankers almost a trillion dollars; after making certain Social Security is sound ...

"a out"

VERY basic grammar:

Before a vowel -- a, e, i, o, and u -- it is "aN".

As in:

"AN out"

Even more basic grammar:

Use "an" before a word beginning with a vowel SOUND, not necessarily a vowel. For example, "AN hour" vs. "A uniform."

People, look, we must return To "Rick Davis Case and his lobbyists".
You see McCane used a guerrilla tactic and political ploy to get away from the bad press he was receiving for the Rick Davis scandal when his poll number was declining. We must not let him get away with this. They think the American people are stupid.

(Rick Davis still receiving cash from Fannie Mae, Sarah Palin not so great interview, Poll sliding)

What McCane did is only to create a diversion so that we do not talk about Rick Davis, Palin, and his poll number.
So he said he would stop his campaign, cancel the debate and parachute in Washington to help in the economic bailout bill in Congress, but when he got there he did not do nothing.

Do not be fooled by this guerrilla tactic. McCane is trying to shift the election.
I already email the O' Camp. Please keep this subject alive. I would not be happy until Rick Davis resign from McCane Camp.
