GREENSBORO, N.C. — Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama on Saturday called Republican rival John McCain out of touch with middle-class Americans, telling supporters that the GOP senator never once uttered the words "middle class" during their first debate.

"Through 90 minutes of debate, John McCain had a lot to say about me, but he didn't have anything to say about you," Obama told a cheering crowd at the J. Douglas Galyon Depot in downtown Greensboro. "He didn't even say the words 'middle class.' He didn't even say the words 'working people.'"

Obama debuted his post-debate attack on McCain with a campaign swing through North Carolina and Virginia, Republican-leaning states where he thinks he can make inroads.

The Illinois senator is trying capitalize on his debate performance by taking McCain to task for not talking about any plans for helping the middle class in the midst of the country's financial and fiscal crisis.

"Just as important as what we heard from John McCain is what we didn't hear from John McCain," Obama said. "We talked about the economy for 40 minutes and not once did Sen. McCain talk about the struggles of middle-class families. Not once did he talk about what they are facing every day here in North Carolina and across the country."

Watch Obama's ad on the debate:

McCain's campaign suggested Saturday that the Arizona senator had referred to the middle class during the debate when he argued that Obama had voted in favor of higher taxes on families making $42,000 a year and proposed hundreds of billions in new government spending that would place a crushing burden on families and businesses. Obama disputed both of those assertions and said that 95 percent of America taxpayers would not pay more in taxes under his plan.

"If he was honest, Barack Obama knows he was unable to debate the merits of supporting higher taxes on the middle class, and bloated government spending during a looming economic crisis _ it simply proved indefensible last night," McCain campaign spokesman Tucker Bounds said in a statement.

Story continues below

Appearing with Obama on Saturday, running mate Joe Biden called McCain's judgment on every important issue "wrong."

"Last night, John McCain's silence on the middle class was deafening," said Biden, a Delaware senator. "We need more than a brave soldier. We need a wise leader."

The Obama campaign tried to back up that point in its newest ad, a spot released Saturday that also notes McCain never mentioned the middle class during the debate. "McCain doesn't get it," the announcer says. "Barack Obama does."

"We need a president who will fight for the middle class every day, and that's what I will do when I'm in the Oval Office," Obama told the cheering crowd.

Obama advisers were encouraged by his performance in the foreign policy arena at the debate at the University of Mississippi but immediately started dampening expectations for future debates.

"This was supposed to be John McCain's turf, and Barack Obama owned it," Biden said.

Obama adviser David Plouffe told reporters the Democrat "spoke really to people in their homes about needing a president who is going to fight for the middle class, who is going to work on things like education and health care."

The presidential hopefuls are scheduled to debate twice more, at Belmont University in Nashville on Oct. 7 and at Hofstra University in Hempsted, N.Y., on Oct. 15.

The next debate will be a town hall format, and Plouffe called McCain the "undisputed town hall champion."

The Dems should not be supporting this bailout under any conditions. Any monies given to the fat cats of Wall Street at this time is simply more of the same. Throwing good money after bad is no way to run a household let alone the largest financial system in the world. The END is NOT coming! Don't be fooled by the scare tactics coming from both sides. It is time for US, the American people to have a say. Better for us to take our medicine now than to struggle through God knows how long of this self afflicted disease, after all we did vote these Bozos in.

Are you supposed to bop the one you're for or against? Why is McSame's # of bops so much lower ?

Um, actually, I went to the site, and they say to bop the person you love the most. Confusing!

oops, I just re-read the site and realized it says the person "you'd most love to bop." So it's the person you want to punch in the nose -- the one you hate. Double-confusing.

"...I wanted to be president because it had become my ambition to be president. . . . In truth, I'd had the ambition for a long time."
'Worth Fighting For', by John McCain

Old Man McCain wants to be President because of his own personal ambition?
Gosh!
I thought it was always country first with those fellers?

It's even worst in full context:

“I didn’t decide to run for president to start a national crusade for the political reforms I believed in or to run a campaign as if it were some grand act of patriotism. In truth, I wanted to be president because it had become my ambition to be president.

You can see in McCain's eyes that he has no self-respect. For someone who considers himself a "straight talker" I couldn't believe how disrespectful he was last night. Over 56M people watched the debate. Some would say McCain did well, others would say he did not. The way I see it is this man couldn't even watch his opponent in the eyes, snickering as if he's a 10-year old *he might be on to something* as if he was above Obama. Americans are fedup with the entitlement belief McCain and his puppets have far to long strung us along with. Whether its red state or blue state, its the american state that's affected. Once we understand that voting because our forefathers did it this way for 40 years, makes absolutely no sense. The only person hurting is the american people. WE are more sensible than Republicans gives us credit for. As Obama say in his speech "Enough!"

Don't worry my faithful Obama supporters, as soon as the country gets a good hour and a half of Sarah Palin on debate night all will be well. The headlines the next day will all have the same gist, how could Mccain pick this completely out of her league individual to be one missing breath from the White House? Biden may very well talk too much but nobody is doubting his intellect or grasp of policy. Americans as a whole may not be that smart but they are certainly not dumb enough to overlook Palin's complete lack of credentials.

Last night Old Man McCain promised bi-partisanship if, God forbid, he wins in November yet he couldn't even bring himself to look at the elected leader of the Democratic Party in the eyes!
So much for the promises of a republican!

Ask any Police Officer; when someone won't look you in the eyes, THEY ARE LYING!

Please, share with us your remedy for 30 years of Republican tax cutting dogma that has put low, middle and upper class Americans in peril of losing what hard assets they do have. From Reagan to Bush II, and even Clinton to a much lesser extent, have had to deal with legislative horse trading predicated on presidential leadership that put rich people 1st, almost rich people 2nd, and everybody else wait for the trickle down. So yes, please tell us. CRAZY as it is, Democrats siding with a Bush request to save the country from the financial ruin he's wrought is laughable on the face of it. But alternatives are... well, what might those be?

Yea, I really want to vote for these spineless Democrats.

Impeach the criminals Bush and Cheney.

NO BAILOUT!!

You'd rather, perhaps vote for the conscienceless Republicans? While the Democrats have been less than courageous going against the machine which has been running things for the last eight years they are the only alternative to the Republicans at this time. McCain and his ilk are being advised and counselled by the same criminals who have been the brains of Bush and Cheney. Don't crap on Obama unless you can come up with someone better. Merely squawking about the spinelessness of the Democrats we must be focusing on the criminality of the Republicans.

Check out bradblog.com...voting machine rigging is primed and ready for Nov 4...the battle begins Nov 5. 2004 was a mess in 2 states, Florida and Ohio, now it is everywhere! I'm hoping Obama is so far in the lead, it would be absurd NOT to win...yes, registering and voting are primarily important but the votes have to be counted for the appropriate candidate...

I think Obama needs to bring out the lack of mentioning the middle class by McCain. But, also, I think he should bring out McCain saying he supported and love vets. That McCain voted for that earmark Bear DNA he keeps railing against. That McCain accused Obama of changing his mind, when McCain changes his mind 25 times more often.....and steals all of Obamas themes and slogans. That he accused Obama, of all people, of being stubborn like Bush........who was acting like the "aggressive cowboy" last night?

Obama needs to come back at McCain when he uses one of those "Obama just doesn't understand" lines by saying something like "Right John, what I don't understand is your thinking, since we have seen you have be wrong or changed your mind on this.....on that........on everything."

John McCain likes to brag about being a 'maverick'. So, please tell me, what, beyond being 'ornery' and contentious, does this do to accomplish anything? If he was a leader! he would convince those in his party that he had valid reasons for them to follow his lead. Otherwise, this is just another political blow to appeal to those of like mind, and he knows very well, his party will not go his way. So he is in a win/win situation. Where is the leadership here?

I was at the Greensboro rally today and heard Barack tell 20,000 middle class North Carolina voters that John McCain failed to mention them, and it resonated. But I would have rather heard Barack call him on it in front of 57 million viewers last night.

He had to wait 'till the end of the debate before he could tell him he never once mentioned the middle class. By the end, the debate was on foreign policy, how could he have gotten that in there?

I know why McCain didn't mention the middle class - because he can't identify with the middle class. I heard it best the other night - McCain is worth over $150 million dollars. He owns multiple houses and cars. If he lost just half of that - he could still live very comfortably. Obama is worth roughly a million dollars (which most of us could live with quite well). He owns one house and one car. I don't think he wants to lose that. People that have gone through struggle understands the American people better on subjects like living from paycheck to paycheck, the crumbling economy, the rising prices of gas, food etc. If I were a gambler, I'd go with the guy with one house, one car instead of the multimillionaire who's biggest decision of the day is "Hmm, which car will I drive today?"
