GREENSBORO, N.C. — Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama on Saturday called Republican rival John McCain out of touch with middle-class Americans, telling supporters that the GOP senator never once uttered the words "middle class" during their first debate.

"Through 90 minutes of debate, John McCain had a lot to say about me, but he didn't have anything to say about you," Obama told a cheering crowd at the J. Douglas Galyon Depot in downtown Greensboro. "He didn't even say the words 'middle class.' He didn't even say the words 'working people.'"

Obama debuted his post-debate attack on McCain with a campaign swing through North Carolina and Virginia, Republican-leaning states where he thinks he can make inroads.

The Illinois senator is trying capitalize on his debate performance by taking McCain to task for not talking about any plans for helping the middle class in the midst of the country's financial and fiscal crisis.

"Just as important as what we heard from John McCain is what we didn't hear from John McCain," Obama said. "We talked about the economy for 40 minutes and not once did Sen. McCain talk about the struggles of middle-class families. Not once did he talk about what they are facing every day here in North Carolina and across the country."

Watch Obama's ad on the debate:

McCain's campaign suggested Saturday that the Arizona senator had referred to the middle class during the debate when he argued that Obama had voted in favor of higher taxes on families making $42,000 a year and proposed hundreds of billions in new government spending that would place a crushing burden on families and businesses. Obama disputed both of those assertions and said that 95 percent of America taxpayers would not pay more in taxes under his plan.

"If he was honest, Barack Obama knows he was unable to debate the merits of supporting higher taxes on the middle class, and bloated government spending during a looming economic crisis _ it simply proved indefensible last night," McCain campaign spokesman Tucker Bounds said in a statement.

Appearing with Obama on Saturday, running mate Joe Biden called McCain's judgment on every important issue "wrong."

"Last night, John McCain's silence on the middle class was deafening," said Biden, a Delaware senator. "We need more than a brave soldier. We need a wise leader."

The Obama campaign tried to back up that point in its newest ad, a spot released Saturday that also notes McCain never mentioned the middle class during the debate. "McCain doesn't get it," the announcer says. "Barack Obama does."

"We need a president who will fight for the middle class every day, and that's what I will do when I'm in the Oval Office," Obama told the cheering crowd.

Obama advisers were encouraged by his performance in the foreign policy arena at the debate at the University of Mississippi but immediately started dampening expectations for future debates.

"This was supposed to be John McCain's turf, and Barack Obama owned it," Biden said.

Obama adviser David Plouffe told reporters the Democrat "spoke really to people in their homes about needing a president who is going to fight for the middle class, who is going to work on things like education and health care."

The presidential hopefuls are scheduled to debate twice more, at Belmont University in Nashville on Oct. 7 and at Hofstra University in Hempsted, N.Y., on Oct. 15.

The next debate will be a town hall format, and Plouffe called McCain the "undisputed town hall champion."

After the debate I expect to see McCain drop from the poll like a one-legged stripper.

Mark my words.....whippersnapper.

I don't know. Every election cycle it is the same thing, the Democrat wins the debates, the Republican wins the elections. Remember Bush's 1st debate against Kerry? That was the worst performance ever by a nominee or sitting president. If that didn't sway enough voters to dump the dunce, I don't think this hurts McSame much.

War / Incumbent / Fear / OK Economy plus - vast Fundamentalist vote.
Kerry lacked charisma. He had the military credentials, yet never counterattacked.
Still, there is a question as to whether he actually lost the election.

That's the Rove machine that's been stealing elections. It's in action this year too, but there's more awareness, and fighting presence on the ground. People are reporting the push polls, and the fake mail register ballots they receive, and Rove is having a harder time this year. Still, evil is hard to completely eradicate, but the fight is on.
Neither the 2000 nor the 2004 elections were won without the Rove election fraud tactics.

This is not an ad put out by the Obama campaign. This is produced by an independent group: Vote for Change.

I'm not sure whether the scare tactics it resorts to are effective.

Because Obama is courting voters in swing states and in states that he wants to take away from McCain, it is important to challenge McCain in the debates but he must not insult or disgrace him. It's juicy red meat for us liberals and there were a lot of openings last night that made us scream when Obama did not go there...But thinking about it today, I understand why. There is so much stuff out there on McCain. He is a walking disaster area and should have his own yellow rope line, but he is also an old man who served in the military and was a POW. Forget that he shamelessly milks his war record and even his advanced years for political gain and he possesses not an ounce of humility or dignity..Voters in Virginia do not want to be reminded of McCain's flaws and certainly not by Obama. Maybe by the third debate the poll numbers will allow Obama a few juicy zingers. He's got it in him but it is just not the right time for them.

You're right. That's why, for example, he wouldn't touch him on the vets issue, when he clearly could've brought up his lousy record on voting for vets bills. The vets know it, they have his record, he's rated at 20%, to Obama's 80% by a vets organization, he even skipped voting on the last one, but had Obama pounced on him, no matter how true, the media would've turned it around, and folks would not have appreciated that, because it's hard to fight the perception that McSame is a vet hero. That further indicated to me how smart Obama is, he knows which shots he can take, and which ones it's better to let go, no matter how we, as spectators see them as missed hits.

Obama has the unique ability to "let it go" and stay silent and strong even when faced with McCain and his absurd insults and lies. That gift will serve him well when as President he will be called upon to enter into negotiations with all kinds of people. After the Clintons and McCain, Obama will be ready for anything.

When Herbert Walker Bush and Dukakis sent their presidential debate agenda to the League of Women Voters, their reply was "This would constitute a fraud to the American public". Since your commission's inception, third party candidates have been disenfranchised. It is no wonder we now do not see a dimes difference between the party candidates.

The Debate in a Nutshell
Posted by James Ostrowski at September 27, 2008 08:00 AM
McBama favors the Billionaire Bailout.
McBama won't say what programs have to be cut to pay for the Billionaire Bailout.
McBama thinks "we should never hesitate to use military force."
McBama wants to escalate the other unwinnable "land war in Asia" (Afghanistan).
McBama is not sure about whether to start a third unwinnable land war in Asia, against nuclear power Pakistan.
McBama would go to war against Iran for the sake of Israel if necessary. He is not sure if he wants to talk with the Iranians before bombing them.
McBama thinks that Russia is the villain in Georgia.
And the winner of the debate is: Ron Paul, who said recently that there’s not a dime’s worth of difference between the two parties.

There are two options:

"Tax and spend" -- i.e., only spend money one has in hand.

"BORROW and spend" -- spend money one does not have by borrowing on the future. As result of that REPUBLICAN scam, we are half a trillion in debt to the COMMUNIST Chinese that the Republicans love to call "COMMUNIST" and "THE ENEMY".

What is it going to take for people to see the writing on the wall. We are being governed by a 1950s mindset and roughly half the population thinks it's just dandy. It's 2008 and half the population is seriously considering voting for a guy that admits to not being able to use a computer and not knowing all that much about financial matters. Another thing that Mccain didn't mention last night was Science. I for one have always maintained that our president should be the smartest guy in the room or close to it, the last eight years haven't changed my mind. Obama is not perfect by a long shot but he seems to be very intelligent and capable of being rational and considered. I think Obama should make the point that new energy technologies are our best bet for creating jobs over both the long and short term.

The McCain camp is distorting that to their advantage. Anyone who watched the debate knew what he was doing when he said that. "You are right, but...."

Obama is excellent at diplomacy- bringing differing views together to work toward a solution. We NEED this philosophy and skill in the WH now. Our country can't afford anymore maverick, contentious attitudes anymore. Our forefathers are rolling over in their graves over how much our country is despised in the eyes of much of the world. Our allies often scratch their heads over the policies and actions of our administration, but back us because they have to. They aren't going to endanger THEIR countries after all!

McCain/Palin are spiraling out of control- they are grasping at straws at this point. I'm looking forward to the VP debate, but wouldn't be a bit surprised if they somehow manage to get it cancelled.

Obama proved last night that he can be our President. He needs to be our President.

McCain did an OK job, if you think endless filibuster saying nothing is debating? At the end of this thing with the personal stuff about bracelets and soldiers rejoined in mass, he didn’t say much. I have a friend in the Marine Corp who went back in 2005 for the bonus, which he just received last May. Good thing Oboma had his own bracelet, right.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 05:16 PM on 09/27/2008

McCain's use of the bracelet, combined with his notion that victory is the only way to honor the death of soldiers, is a disgrace. To say you have to victorious to honor the death of a soldier on the battlefield fighting for their country gives dishonor to those who died in Vietnam. A soldier that dies while fighting for his country should be honored no matter the outcome. Who does McCain feel should sign surrender papers in Iraq? The Iraq government? The people of Iraq? Who?

Well I guess its because mistakes like when Obama said to McSame "If in your extensive military and foreign policy experience you were wrong 4 times (Obama spelled them out) on the call to the Iraq War", and McSames just looks down, clenches his jaws and sheepishly works up a smile. Well I can see why people would tally that, among other points as a win. Maybe you are not looking hard enough. Or maybe you have the sound off. They gave O a bigger jump in approval from the beginning to the end, ending up with his approval rating above McC's, and gave McC some very bad responses for his perceived negativity and constant attacks on O. They did not like that at all.
