GREENSBORO, N.C. — Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama on Saturday called Republican rival John McCain out of touch with middle-class Americans, telling supporters that the GOP senator never once uttered the words "middle class" during their first debate.

"Through 90 minutes of debate, John McCain had a lot to say about me, but he didn't have anything to say about you," Obama told a cheering crowd at the J. Douglas Galyon Depot in downtown Greensboro. "He didn't even say the words 'middle class.' He didn't even say the words 'working people.'"

Obama debuted his post-debate attack on McCain with a campaign swing through North Carolina and Virginia, Republican-leaning states where he thinks he can make inroads.

The Illinois senator is trying capitalize on his debate performance by taking McCain to task for not talking about any plans for helping the middle class in the midst of the country's financial and fiscal crisis.

"Just as important as what we heard from John McCain is what we didn't hear from John McCain," Obama said. "We talked about the economy for 40 minutes and not once did Sen. McCain talk about the struggles of middle-class families. Not once did he talk about what they are facing every day here in North Carolina and across the country."

Watch Obama's ad on the debate:

McCain's campaign suggested Saturday that the Arizona senator had referred to the middle class during the debate when he argued that Obama had voted in favor of higher taxes on families making $42,000 a year and proposed hundreds of billions in new government spending that would place a crushing burden on families and businesses. Obama disputed both of those assertions and said that 95 percent of America taxpayers would not pay more in taxes under his plan.

"If he was honest, Barack Obama knows he was unable to debate the merits of supporting higher taxes on the middle class, and bloated government spending during a looming economic crisis _ it simply proved indefensible last night," McCain campaign spokesman Tucker Bounds said in a statement.

Appearing with Obama on Saturday, running mate Joe Biden called McCain's judgment on every important issue "wrong."

"Last night, John McCain's silence on the middle class was deafening," said Biden, a Delaware senator. "We need more than a brave soldier. We need a wise leader."

The Obama campaign tried to back up that point in its newest ad, a spot released Saturday that also notes McCain never mentioned the middle class during the debate. "McCain doesn't get it," the announcer says. "Barack Obama does."

"We need a president who will fight for the middle class every day, and that's what I will do when I'm in the Oval Office," Obama told the cheering crowd.

Obama advisers were encouraged by his performance in the foreign policy arena at the debate at the University of Mississippi but immediately started dampening expectations for future debates.

"This was supposed to be John McCain's turf, and Barack Obama owned it," Biden said.

Obama adviser David Plouffe told reporters the Democrat "spoke really to people in their homes about needing a president who is going to fight for the middle class, who is going to work on things like education and health care."

The presidential hopefuls are scheduled to debate twice more, at Belmont University in Nashville on Oct. 7 and at Hofstra University in Hempsted, N.Y., on Oct. 15.

The next debate will be a town hall format, and Plouffe called McCain the "undisputed town hall champion."

McCain = 90% Bush and not from the middle class. Republican government is NOT FOR the middle class.
The $700+BILLION bailout for the rich--- paid for by the diminishing Middle Class of America---is THE LAST LAUGH of the Bush-Cheney administration.

Their "mission accomplished" was to shift all monies from Middle Class Americans into pockets of the CORRUPT, DEREGULATED CORPORATE WELFARE QUEENS whose greed finally CRASHED the ECONOMY.

We cannot afford Republicans any more, who expect their way to be paid by our diminishing Middle Class. We are handed the bill for all their economic disasters, NO THANKS.

NO MORE YEARS for republican lies, distortions, corruption, made-up PROFITEER wars. We're sick of paying for their damage.

McCain did what Republicans do best; dominate the conversation with an endless filibuster. Even my brother-in-law doses this, when he gets a few in glasses of wine in him. On several occasions McCain just rambled on with unrelated talking points, with Lair losing control of the time. This tactic is really annoying and diversionary when the speaker has nothing relevant say. I’m not sure Obama is suppose to do without looking bad maybe call a time out make him look like an idiot. McCain avoided answering several questions related to the economy and the buy out plan. He played to the base with the tax issue and substituted the term “corporate taxes” with “business taxes” to avoid sounding like a typical pro-business Republican. In my mind that statement clearly said it all. I did not believe that a McCain Administration would track this closely to Bush, I was wrong.

My criticism for Obama don’t let him away with ANY THING, don’t let him filibuster you, this is not the Senate, show a little more passion just a little. Don’t say I agree, even when McCain is right, these sound bites can use against you. I would really go after McCain in the economy debate, this foremost on people’s minds, marry him to Bush, crazy glue him to Bush. Call him on lying about veterans, when he challenges you, say "look it up".

LOL.........McCain who got the wrong Secretary of State going to Korea....he said Madalene Albright.....she was Clinton's Secretary of State. Does he not want to name Condi Rice ? He also got the name of the president of Pakistan wrong. And he also is still confused that Spain is an ally who fought with us in Iraq and as a result also had a terrorist attack.

The so called foreign policy expert didn't understand that he's really not that much of an expert.

What debate did you watch? Is this some neocon talking point you are referring? If you are not man enough to tell some one they are right in an argument, then you are a mean old man who denigrates his black opponent. I thought Obama did quite well in rebutting the old man without seeming viscous. An articulate point on Kissinger and Spain but many other knowledable points. I would rather wait until the next day from a smooth well delivered debate without blunders, than Mcbush trying to defend himself all day today from all the bombs he dropped. Count the mistakes Obama made compared to Mcbush. Oh none you say for Obama? Mcbush just showed how mean and callus he is.

Mac said e ould doule the deduction for dependents (your kids) or $3500 to $7000.

I guarantee ouevery middle class person liked to hear that.

But since most posters here are still kids themselves, they have no idea how impactful this is to a middle class voter.

Let's do the math -- you have 2 kids you can deduct $14,000 o your income ax form.

Daisy, McCain's deductions might be enough to equal Obama's tax cuts, or they might not. My kid is in college so McCain's deductions are worthless to me.

Personal pocketbook is important, and McCain's tax cuts to the wealthy do more to undermine the middle class than help them. You have to look at the big picture.

After all we've seen in the past two weeks, why does McCain still subscribe to trickle-down economics? Lehrer, and America, wanted to know how how the economic crisis had affected the candidate's policies. McCain didn't answer the question. He gets an "F".

Yes, much better to be old and totally out of touch with day to day realities.
If tax cuts were "the solution", than Bush and The Republicans wouldn't be a problem.

If McCain has so much apparent disdain for an elected U.S. Senator and Democratic nominee from his own country, how much disdain will he show to leaders of other nations? To say it plainly, he is just mean. I don't think he has the overall temperment that will represent this country well on the world stage. Obama is regal, diplomatic, and discerning and therefore has the temperment necessary to represent this country.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 04:41 PM on 09/27/2008

Your point is well taken. In the space of a few days, McCain through the leader of Spain (our NATO ally) under the bus because he was confused and would not admit it. Last night, he called Pakistan a failed state before Musharraf's coup which has been de-bunked by experts. To compliment his "great" disposition and statesmanship, McCain picked a running mate whose great foreign policy exposure to world leaders came in NEW YORK. Her great contribution this week was to state that her state's trade missions to Russia was some type of covert spy-surveillance effort to keep Putin's activities monitored by the US. And, with a straight face, they present themselves as serious contenders for the most important political positions in this country. What is worse is that a fair percentage of Americans are willing to cling to these two rather than trust that the first African-American nominee for POTUS. It's disturbing beyond belief.

I have had to conclude, finally, just how ignorant and stupid many of my fellow Americans really are. Ignorance isn't just about being uninformed on the issues, it's also about being incapable or unwilling to think critically for oneself. Far easier to open one's mouth and be spoon-fed by such stellar networks like Fox.

Ignorance, in the Buddhist tradition, is the most egregious mental defilement there is. It is actually the source of all our suffering in the world. Anger, hatred, attachment, jealousy, etc. all come from ignorance.

Of course, you're referring to recent emergency measures taken by our Neocon President, the Fed and his Secretary of the Treasury, to actually socialize our now broken financial markets and protect wealthy transgressors.

But, certainly sanctimonious Reagan free marketers, like McCain, who preached total forfeiture of all prudent regulatory oversights, are wholly innocent of guilding the goose.

Great Post and Great Political Ad!

And last night was some outstanding theater, and Barack did a great job articulating his vision. McCain is stuck like a broken record and everything about his campaign is like script fresh from a Peter Sellers movie.

I think McCain is depending on an uneducated population to pull him through. Between that and the five or six vets he believes he supports.

McCain is stuck in the 19th century, with 19th century ideas, someone forgot to tell him its a brand new world out there, and for him to stop digging up the past. When McCain talk about the past he appear older and out of touch with the world. Obama won the debate, he spoke about the future of America, and the new density, and a new vision.

Not only didn't McCain mention the middle class throughout the entire debate, he even tried to spin his record on veterans affairs. We veterans know that he has voted consistently against any measure that would make our lives a little better and that includes not showing up to vote for the new GI Bill proposal which he tenaciously opposed along with President Bush. That is why 80% of us support Mr. Obama.

Daisy, that’s from the Disabled American Veterans internal polls. The Vietnam Veterans of America, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Paralyzed Veterans of America have similar opinion results. Even the American Legion quietly opposes McCain. Not to mention: Veterans For Peace, Vietnam Veterans Against The War, Iraq Veterans Against The War, Vote Vets.Org, Veterans For Common Sense, etc., etc. I guess if you are a vet you probably belong to the other 20% side of the scale, but I will not take that on you, because you are a sister in arms and I respect you even as we disagree.

Perhaps, someone has mentioned the Jim Lehrer gaffe - My wife went ballistic - Lehrer began a question to one of the candidates, by saying "When you rule".

Did not know George Herbert Walker Bush had defeated Richard III and established the Tudor, er Bush dynasty. We are governed, not ruled. Although, under Shrub, it is rather hard to tell the difference.

As a former active US Marine, Lehrer should have realized the difference.

It's called the imperial presidency -- it's interesting to read it, if you like. This is what most academics consider our political system to be. Congress has passively/actively enforced that system since the end of WWII. We haven't exactly done anything about this, either.

I think our democracy will be better off when we have three, four, or five parties all with an interest in running the government. Right now the system is set up for two parties and we need more. Let the middle class liberals have their seats, the neocon christofascist have their seats, the rich repubs get some and the rest get divided into the green party. There should also be a penalty for not registering and not voting. The reason these contest are so close is so few people actually vote. Less than 17% of the population will elect the next president. That is what it was a few years ago, who knows now.
