GREENSBORO, N.C. — Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama on Saturday called Republican rival John McCain out of touch with middle-class Americans, telling supporters that the GOP senator never once uttered the words "middle class" during their first debate.

"Through 90 minutes of debate, John McCain had a lot to say about me, but he didn't have anything to say about you," Obama told a cheering crowd at the J. Douglas Galyon Depot in downtown Greensboro. "He didn't even say the words 'middle class.' He didn't even say the words 'working people.'"

Obama debuted his post-debate attack on McCain with a campaign swing through North Carolina and Virginia, Republican-leaning states where he thinks he can make inroads.

The Illinois senator is trying capitalize on his debate performance by taking McCain to task for not talking about any plans for helping the middle class in the midst of the country's financial and fiscal crisis.

"Just as important as what we heard from John McCain is what we didn't hear from John McCain," Obama said. "We talked about the economy for 40 minutes and not once did Sen. McCain talk about the struggles of middle-class families. Not once did he talk about what they are facing every day here in North Carolina and across the country."

Watch Obama's ad on the debate:

McCain's campaign suggested Saturday that the Arizona senator had referred to the middle class during the debate when he argued that Obama had voted in favor of higher taxes on families making $42,000 a year and proposed hundreds of billions in new government spending that would place a crushing burden on families and businesses. Obama disputed both of those assertions and said that 95 percent of America taxpayers would not pay more in taxes under his plan.

"If he was honest, Barack Obama knows he was unable to debate the merits of supporting higher taxes on the middle class, and bloated government spending during a looming economic crisis _ it simply proved indefensible last night," McCain campaign spokesman Tucker Bounds said in a statement.

Appearing with Obama on Saturday, running mate Joe Biden called McCain's judgment on every important issue "wrong."

"Last night, John McCain's silence on the middle class was deafening," said Biden, a Delaware senator. "We need more than a brave soldier. We need a wise leader."

The Obama campaign tried to back up that point in its newest ad, a spot released Saturday that also notes McCain never mentioned the middle class during the debate. "McCain doesn't get it," the announcer says. "Barack Obama does."

"We need a president who will fight for the middle class every day, and that's what I will do when I'm in the Oval Office," Obama told the cheering crowd.

Obama advisers were encouraged by his performance in the foreign policy arena at the debate at the University of Mississippi but immediately started dampening expectations for future debates.

"This was supposed to be John McCain's turf, and Barack Obama owned it," Biden said.

Obama adviser David Plouffe told reporters the Democrat "spoke really to people in their homes about needing a president who is going to fight for the middle class, who is going to work on things like education and health care."

The presidential hopefuls are scheduled to debate twice more, at Belmont University in Nashville on Oct. 7 and at Hofstra University in Hempsted, N.Y., on Oct. 15.

The next debate will be a town hall format, and Plouffe called McCain the "undisputed town hall champion."

Obama won the debate, and there are good reasons why. Paul Newman would appreciate them.

please give the old mana break

McCain loked like he is shi*tting in his pan*ties yesterday. So pale, so anemic.

I was afraid he was going to collapse live from the debate stage....

seriously, I dont think he will make it to the 3rd debate...

unless he fires his pittbull and brings Ghouliani on board, u know, the guy who knows only two numbers : 9 and 11...or any other right wing junkie like Liberman

"McCain is the undisputed champion of the Town Hall format?' All it will take is a question about the draft, or rebuilding New Orleans/Galveston, or FUNDING CUTS (which is REALLY what 'spending cuts') means, and McCain's eyes will glaze over. He won't have the Governor of Alaska at his side to handle questions on Equal Pay for Equal Work or Reproductive rights or the Employee Free Choice Act or the Draft or how he proposes to REALLY cut spending (hint: Ending the war in Iraq will NOT be one of his priority line items). or his record on VETERANS. McCain will REALLY START to ramble THEN or else deliver the same tired one-liners that forced people to turn off the TV last night.
'Undisputed champion"? Don't really think so.

If someone in the audience asks a question about the Spain Snub, McCain just might leap into the stands and attempt to pummel the questioner.

I agree. What is this " Plouffe called McCain the "undisputed town hall champion." Is this the same way he is the "expert in foreign affairs." Do people really think that something becomes true if you just say it over and over?

I didn't hear any expertise on foreign affairs in last night's debate. I heard a lot of boring personal history and tiresome self promotion. Obama was so over McCain's head in his understanding of the world situation it's not even funny.

So, let's see about the town hall meeting. It's hard to think that grumpy, nasty old curmudgeon has anything in his arsenal but more platitudes, lies, and old think. Obama is gracious, brilliant, caring, insightful, and knows what's going on and what is what. He should do fabulously in the town hall meeting.

On the VIEW McCain said that Roe v Wade was a bad decision and repeated the wing nut dribble that he would appoint strict constructionist Judges to the court, code for corporate lackeys like Roberts and ethics challenged Thomas and Scalia. That’s when Woopi ask him if she is going back to slavery. I want McCain to look at the camera and tell women that Roe is bad law and he wants it reversed. Why are old men more hung up with this issue than women?

The next debate will be a town hall format, and Plouffe called McCain the "undisputed town hall champion."

People keep saying this, but I don't see it. Every news report or blog video I've seen McCain rambles and tells unconnected stories until everyone forgets what the question was then says "next question".

Maybe that's what being good at townhall meetings is? I don't know, but it won't stand up if Obama actually answers the people's questions. Also being lawded as the champ sets the bar very high for McCain and very low for Obama. One or two good answers from Obama wins the day. The champ has to nail every answer and not let even one blow go unanswered.

Okay, Tucker Bounds needs to be put back in his Ken Doll box and shipped back to China. The failed Republican meme that Obama is going to raise middle class taxes has been debunked again and again and again. I have no idea why it's still a talking point for them.

Tucker Bounds. Tucker Bounds. Tucker Bounds. Tucker Bounds.
Say it fast and often enough and it begins to sound as ridiculous as the words coming out of his stupid mouth.
The guy is a complete dolt.
I don't know why anyone in their right mind would pay any attention to him.

Obama absolutely mentioned the middle-class. He will fight for the middle-class, for the average worker - unlike mcsame who only wants to grab power to make his rich buddies, and his rich wife, even wealthier - at our expense. Remember, it's the poor man's child who fights for the rich man's war.

Sorry, my mistake. My point was that there appears to be lot of focus given to the middle class, and far less given to the lower class.

I was extremely proud of my candidate. He tells the truth. He is unafraid to address his opponent directly. He doesn't have to resort to old man condescension. (And I recognize his old man empty and ineffective and, yes, SAD, patronization, being almost 60 myself.)

Even in these times, the absolute toughest ever faced in all of my years, I feel confidence in the man who is equipped to lead us through this quagmire. He will tell us the truth, no matter how tough it is. And it will be tough ... especially when he walks into the White House as president and discovers just how deep is the doodoo left by Bush and his cronies.

And Biden??? I LOVED his comments after the debate! He's a man who I would want on my side. The chemistry between the two is SPOT ON. Biden doesn't always have to agree with Obama, which is but another indication of Obama's mature intelligence. We are so fortunate to have the option of OBAMA/BIDEN '08.

Think ahead... I can't even imagine how awful the USA would be, how low it would sink, under the dictatorship of one such as McCain. And his VP choice, whatzhername? Irrelevant, pithy, and full of uninformed nonsense.
