John McCain is running a new campaign ad that actually attacks Barack Obama for agreeing with John McCain. This has to be the first time in history that a candidate ever went negative on his opponent for being too agreeable.

If the ad had a lighthearted, funny tone I think it could work. But instead, it is angry and sneering, just like John McCain.

Watch the ad:

Aside from the tone, the ad's problem is that it reinforces Obama's message that he is willing to work across party lines. Why in the world would a campaign put up an ad that says that the opposing candidate only cares about doing the right thing, not about winning the political battle.

Basically, McCain is accusing Obama of being a decent guy.

Moreover, everybody knows that Barack Obama has serious disagreements with John McCain, starting with Iraq -- where John McCain was unequivocally wrong:

John McCain is running a new campaign ad that actually attacks Barack Obama for agreeing with John McCain. This has to be the first time in history that a candidate ever went negative on his opponent ...

Lessons from the past --- Don't 'ever' compliment a Rethug -- instead of 'humbly' receiving it as but normal courteous discourse , they take it as a "license-to-kill".

Sorry I have to agree with you, but it is. It was too easy to see it coming while watching the debate, Obama literally set it up for them. He has to engage mind before opening mouth, both he and Biden. For savvy politicians they don't seem to understand that no matter how well your intentions are, if the opposition can use it against you they will. Come on guys let's not load the enemies guns.

I think it was more important to look at Bush44 and say where he agreed, after all, both candidates are touting their ability to work with the opposition party. This starts with acknowledging that some of the points and opinions of the opposition are shared.

Someone should tell Palin the same thing!

I'll try to find you some, and I'll bring them to you.

And McCain:

The fundamentals of the economy or strong!
I'm suspending my campaign!

hThen maybe you can help me because (as explained one post up) I don't get the point. He's unfit to lead because he agrees with McCain, and we should therefore vote McCain? I'm really lost here.

He's unfit to lead because the ad shows him just agreeing with McCain over and over...not showing any original thought of his own. (Kind of like the bracelet remark..."I have a bracelet, too." That was just pitiful sounding like "look at me, I have one toooo.")

I think Obama should just reword it like this: "I am glad that Senator McCain follows my belief in (fill in the agreeable item), however, I strongly feel (input differences)"

This is just too easy. McCain likes to boast that he's the nonpartisan who reaches across the aisle while falsely accusing Obama of not doing the same. Obama can easily turn this into an offense by stating in the next debate that he doesn't just talk about bipartisanship but lives it, agreeing with an opponent and then stating where he differs. By not playing politics as usual and sometimes agreeing with his opponent, Obama showed that HE is the candidate who will reach across the aiisle to solve our nation's problems, not McCain, who's playing the old Republican game of needing to demonize anyone how disagrees with you at all - even when you agree! Obama showed he truly is the candidate of CHANGE, while McCain simply gave of more of George Bush, and more of the type of politics that led our nation to its current distress.

Is this how you intend to run your White House?

He was accusing Obama of being too far to the left therefore can't reach across the aisle and that he has a record of bipartisanship . A 90 min debate showed the american people who is the one who can work across party lines and the one who wouldn't even look at a fellow senator he was debating ideas with. McCain is so much in a state of denial that he thinks the debate was only broadcast on the radio. He must still be living in the 50's

Perhaps for the next debate, BO could add one little phrase before he says, "Senator McCain is right..." and that phrase should be "This is how Senator McCain and I differ..." That way, we know he is about to disagree with JM, but we also hear that he is willing to admit to some common ground.

McCain wouldn't even look Obama in the eye, AND, the Obama's had to walk clear across the stage to make the gesture of extending a hand shake to Sen. and Mrs. McCain...I think it was clear who was professional and who had manners!

or he could say something like, "I can understand John McCain's simple answer to a complex problem, but here's a very important difference in the way we view this....." something has to be said to slam mccain for the shallowness of his answers. obama is OBVIOUSLY the statesman. he's the one i want speaking for our country.

I am sorry. I spent the entire night pulling my hair out every time, over and over again that Barack said McCain is absolutely right. I thought my wife was going to kill me. But, I predicated that the TV would be flooded until November with those "how right McCain" is ads. I even left the TV and Emailed Obama's site twice to get him to knock it off. The best I could do was tell them to insure me the same would not happen in the next two. Unfortunately the horse is out of the barn

For solid politicians BOTH Barack and Biden have no sense of how what they say will be used against them. They both do not understand to engage brain before opening mouth. Regardless of their honest intent, if it can be it will be used against them.

Here Obama is trying to reach across party line and McCain is exploiting it. However, I guarantee you that Obama campaign advisor will warn Obama about not been so generous next time. McCain never looked at Obama when ever he was speaking. I thought that was very rude. I find Mccain to be condescending, antagonistic toward Obama sf if he was speaking to a child.

This is a great opportunity for us to counter-attack with our own ad, along the lines of...

John McCain is so completely out of touch that he thinks Barack Obama agrees with him! Its pretty clear to most of America that he doesn't. He are some specifics... John McCain, out of touch with America.

sure, obama agreed with mac on a few points. mac said government spending is out of control - obama agreed. but it didn't stop there. obama disagreed about the path to reducing spending. mac actually suggested a spending freeze, for crying out loud. o responded by saying that's like using a hammer when a scalpel is needed - which was brilliant.

be patient, folks. be patient.

ROFL ...for someone with a Harvard Degree ( WHERE ARE THOSE GRADES BTW) ... he sure doesn't appear very aware of his own spoken word or the overall effect it would have during the debate. Once again, take away the teleprompter and ... I rest my case.

For Do your homework. You obviously did not go to Harvard---I did. The man was Editor of the Harvard Law Review. To get there, you have to be top of the class. Moreover, as Editor of the Harvard Law Review, one would have the pick of any job on Wall Street or clerkship with any of the Supreme Court Justices. Does it pain you that Obama is actually---how should I put it?-- Brilliant? You should embrace having a bright person as President.

Obama graduated with honors from Harvard Law and was/is roundly considered one of its shining stars.

Any commonsense individual can see that Obama was merely demonstrating his ability to agree when it is correct to do so. He also demonstrated his ability to find CONSENSUS -- an overriding theme of his campaign (his acceptance speech at the DNC speaks clearly to that belief).

It is surprising to me how threatening a Harvard education, with honors, is to some Americans. Once again Harvard ranks the finest institution of higher education in the United States according to the New York Times much respected and relied up 'College Review.' Along with Oxford, Cambridge and the Sorbonne, Harvard stands as a world-class university and bastion of higher learning.

I am certain that any voter downplaying such an education -- impressive thanks to the need for discipline, focus, God-given brilliance and hard work -- who is also a parent would be the 'braggart of the block' if his or her child were accepted -- yes ACCEPTED -- into Harvard.

Of course, education is what one makes of it, and it is clear that Obama has learned enough to know that petty displays of anger or rancor are NOT the qualities of a good leader.
