John McCain is running a new campaign ad that actually attacks Barack Obama for agreeing with John McCain. This has to be the first time in history that a candidate ever went negative on his opponent for being too agreeable.

If the ad had a lighthearted, funny tone I think it could work. But instead, it is angry and sneering, just like John McCain.

Watch the ad:

Aside from the tone, the ad's problem is that it reinforces Obama's message that he is willing to work across party lines. Why in the world would a campaign put up an ad that says that the opposing candidate only cares about doing the right thing, not about winning the political battle.

Basically, McCain is accusing Obama of being a decent guy.

Moreover, everybody knows that Barack Obama has serious disagreements with John McCain, starting with Iraq -- where John McCain was unequivocally wrong:

John McCain is running a new campaign ad that actually attacks Barack Obama for agreeing with John McCain. This has to be the first time in history that a candidate ever went negative on his opponent ...

If 58 million people watched the debate, they saw what we saw, so this ad is a really dumb ad. It's a waste of money.
Everyone is going to know what followed each of those comments, and the result is, Obama is definitely ready to lead.

The McCain campaign does not know the meaning of the word CLASS. Obama has class. He is a mature human being that is willing to agree and disagree when necessary. The McCain campaign dwells and lives in darkness and lies and this is why they have such a hard time with Obama's maturity.

CLASS would have been to honor Sen Kennedy since he had just been rushed to the hospital. Oh wait, one of them DID mention Kennedy ... the one WITH real class

Wasn't McCain saying since the beginning of this campaign that HE was Mr. Bipartisan, Mr. Reach-across-the-Isle? Yet he spent the entire debate acting like a petulant child who wouldn't look at Barrack, or even use his name.

I think a few well placed "Good point, John."'s showed who the truly bipartisan, adult candidate was up there.

I didn't think McCain's age should be that big of an issue. Now however I see he is too 'Grumpy old man' and much too 'Spoiled brat' for any leadership position.

Nobody who agrees with John McCain is ready to lead.

He agreed on the need for changes. He NEVER agreed on any solutions with McCain.

Neocons and the Religious Right are "my way or the highway" politically. To compromise or even agree partially with an opponent is to show weakness. The Democratic Process itself is abhorred by those dedicated to the teachings of Leo Strauss, Grover Norquist, or any other fundamentalist religion! Even if McCain had enough hair to do it, he would never be capable ol letting it down in a confrontation with an enemy.

Wait a minute so BO is not ready to lead because he want to build on a common ground! So to be a leader you must disagree with every word said by others!!! What's their definition of Honor again?

I'm not sure it's an altogether stupid ad. Admittedly, it's clumsily executed. But last night, as I listened to Obama (and I'm his supporter), my heart sank every time he uttered that phrase: "Senator McCain is right." He said it 8 or 9 times, and I think it was a huge mistake. In trying to win a debate, you don't repeatedly point out how your opponent is right. Obama likely was attempting to show reason and possibly, a willing bipartisanship, but he took huge risks: risks that people will wonder if he's actually different from McCain, and risked giving McCain and his pathetic arguments credibility. I was dismayed, but not surprised, to see the ad surface first thing this morning. Don't do it next time, Mr. Obama!

Most people, I think, interpreted his agreements with McCain as mistakes, but a number of others (myself included) believe it says far more about his willingness to work across party lines. Maybe this was simply too nuanced for most to grasp?

I agree, but I'd never underestimate the stupidity of the American people.

McCain's body language and condescending tone told me all I need to know about him.
He's a smarmy, sleazy, mean little old man who isn't fit to lead this country.

"Nuance" is word half the electorate can't spell, let alone understand. The answer to your question is a definite "yes". Please everyone remember that we are out to win an election, not just a debate. Ellewilson was right on target with her comments.

every time he said mac was right, is didn't just end with saying that. he continued in order to show where they parted in their agreement on an issue. he consistently showed where mac lost touch with whichever issue.

Same here.
I know what Sen. Obama was trying to say and do. But, in politics, the smallest thing can be twisted. He opened the door and the lil slimmy man wiggled on in.

Usually a lay judge will vote for the person that 1. Makes his points in a convincing manner 2. Is affable.

I think independent voters will find Obama more personable after the debate. I think he did well. Its been said over and over that Americans vote for the person that they want to have a beer with. I think that guy was Obama last night. I wouldn't want to share a beer with the cranky old guy. Obama seemed like your smart neighbor. Which may sound crazy but its what the average person will vote for.

Look, the debate was aimed at the 10% of independent voters who have not yet made up their minds about for whom they will vote. Showing class and a bipartisan spirit shows that Obama is the best presidential candidate out there. I realize the HP is leftist, hey, I love reading it every day. But don't forget that the debate was not just for shoring up the leftist base. It was for demonstrating who is best suited for being the next president to independent voters.

Jon Stewart is going to have a lot of fun with this one?

I sorta wish Obama WASN'T so willing to work across party lines after what the GOP has done/is doing to this country...........
Like I think Obama shoulda knocked him outta the park when he said he'd "take care of the troops" when he voted AGAINST the new GI bill. This kind of stuff should come out.

That will come up in the domestic issues debate . It is called lulling your opponent into a false sense of security. Just wait.

I suspect the Obama campaign is playing their cards close to the vest. There's a ton of material waiting to be released as ads, including Mac's behavior as a POW. The best is yet to come, and McCain won't have a chance to dispute it.
