I Like ItI Don’t Like It
Clinton

Some Democrats who are growing wary with what they see as Bill Clinton's tepid support for Barack Obama weren't likely relieved by the former president's appearance this Sunday on Meet the Press.

Clinton offered some praise for the man hoping to fill his former chair in the Oval Office, but much of it was admiration for Obama's political acumen and not his character. "I know he saw and imagined the way this thing could develop this political year and this economic situation, in a way that has left him in a position of leadership he is now," Clinton said.

At one point, host Tom Brokaw asked, "Would you use the same words for [Obama] that you have used for Senator McCain, that you admire him and that you think he's a great man?"

Clinton seemed caught off-guard and responded, "Well, I don't -- look, I had my first conversation with him in my entire life in Harlem," a reference to a lunch the two had in mid-September. Clinton followed by stating that he "certainly admire[s]" Obama, but that while the Illinois Democrat has "unlimited potential," he could only achieve greatness in time.

At one point in the interview, Clinton acknowledged that it was his wife, Hillary, who "told me to go help [Obama]." And while Bill Clinton criticized John McCain for representing a brand of politics that he disagreed with, he offered a far more adulatory take on the Arizona Republican's personality traits.

"Most people would have been broken by what he been through, or we would have been happy just to give him an atta boy and medal and let him wander through life," said Clinton. "I think his greatness is that he keeps trying to come back to service without ever asking people to cut him any slack or feel sorry for him or any of that stuff because he was a P.O.W."

Clinton's relationship with Obama has been a topic of much angst and conversation within Democratic circles. After a bitter-primary battle in which Obama defined the 1990s as a period of excessive partisanship (albeit economic growth) and Clinton's standing within African American communities stumbled, it was not surprising that the two figures would have issues with reconciliation. The former president's speech at the Democratic Convention in Denver seemed to remedy the frostiness. But this past week - as much media attention has been heaped on Clinton's Global Initiative - Clinton has, in some ways, reverted back to form: offering more tepid support for the Democratic ticket and showing a strong willingness to compliment McCain and his running mate, Sarah Palin.

Indeed, somewhat remarkably, on Meet the Press, Clinton spoke up the Alaska Governor even as (or perhaps unaware of) conservatives themselves are beginning to abandon ship.

"Most of these people that are undecided they like John McCain and they kind of like her, what they know of her," he said. "And if they're going to move off of her or dislike her it is going to be because they think she is too conservative or too traditionally Republican or some issues that are very important to our future."

Seems to me like Clinton has been laying it on thick not only with McCain but with Palin as well. How well does he know Palin to praise her and her husband?

I'm stating the obvious here, but Clinton hates Obama. At this point it shouldn't matter what he says or does for Obama because who needs enemies with friends like him?

Do I wish Bill to showed more enthusiasm for Obama and showered him with more praise? Yes! But he's right - he doesn't know Obama well enough (among other reasons) to be so effusive. He's acknowledged Obama's foresight on the war, the economy and the political clime. He's acknowledged his leadership. I think that's good enough.

The voters that Obama needs Bill's help to reach don't care about him as a person. They just need to be convinced that Obama has the foresight and leadership qualities to champion their cause in the WH and they'll vote for him.

Let Kerry, Bill Richardson, Claire McCaskill et al continue to vouch for Obama's character. Bill and Hillary have a different task.

Unfortunately their task is to get McCain elected so Hillary can run in 2012.

To hell with both of them.

Then perhaps his should tell Obama to dump Bill, and tell his supporters to stop demanding his soul.

Yes, in the unlikely event that "the One" loses, it MUST be the faul of the Clintons and Rascism.
Forget that Hillary endorsed and supported Obama before any other candidate in Democratic primary history. Forget that she raised millions of dollars for Obama despite Obama raising only $700,000 for her. Forget that the percentage of voters who supported Hillary that don't support Obama are the same voters who didn't support Kerry or Gore and are swing voters and that Hillary has done more to help Obama win than either Richards, Biden, Dobbs, Edwards, or Kucinich. Forget that Obama won the nomination with the help of 255 superdelegates because he didn't win the number of pledged delegates to claim the nomination outright. Forget that Hillary DID not contest the RBC ruling at the credentials meeting and forget the HIllary did not force a floor vote, merely ceremonial and traditional roll call for the sake of her voters and the delegate pledged to represent those voters. Forget Bill Clinton has done more to end poverty and cure AIDS in the African American community as well as in AFRICA itself, than any public official in U.S history, including Obama. Forget that Hillary and Bill provided two incredible speeches which completely galvanized the Democratic party toward defeating McCain. Forget that Hillary and Bill have always been and continue to be committed to the Democratic Party regardless of who is at the top of the ticket.

As an ardent Obama supporter, I'm always grateful for the comic relief of you desperate Repubs when you use sarcastic terms like, "the one." The funniest thing about it being, you guys are the only ones who ever spout this garbage. :)

geez, you guys...give it a rest. did you watch the ENTIRE interview? there was no way that bill could have said that obama was a great man in the context of talking about john mc cain, his POW/war hero status and 26 years in the senate???? to have done so would have been a joke! what bill DID say is that he thinks obama WILL BE a great man, and a great president.

sometimes these articles read like a mc cain ad: out of context!

Bill does not need to be taken out of context for all to see his anger and disrespect for Obama. If you guys are fooled, who cares. But take it from a former Clinton supporter, its clear as day that Clinton does not support Obama, Every nuance of his being makes that point clear to anyone who watches him objectively. Thats why McCain was chosen to Keynote his Initiative. No Republican no matter how Bypartisan would have a Democratic Candidate competing with a Candidate from their own Party as a Keynote speaker at their National event, in the Middle of a highly contested election. At best they would have a Nuetral person. Why Clinton believes that he is fooling anyone is not clear to me.

Obviously Mr. Clinton can still parse the language. This is his legacy he is working on and he has not done enough to remove the self applied tarnish. If Obama wins without the effusive support he has earned and deserves from these sore losers, then the legacy is forever damaged and if he loses, well that is irreparable harm to Senator Clinton's political future and The ubiquitous Clinton legacy. I am saddened at the petty tone and insufficient recognition of the will of the people. No Clinton, No way, no how, not ever! Elder statesmen should rise above the crap he is peddling.

The Clintons never forgive and never forget. Hillary is doing the bare minimum of support in public, but she's still a senator. Bill has no government role and will never give even token support for Obama; he doesn't have to and thinks only of his own bitterness and loss. What a putz.

The shame is that he has done more to harm her carear than she has herself, and his continual sublimular undermining of the Democratic Ticket may cost her the NY Senate seat that she now holds.

Clinton said he thought Obama "saw and imagined" how the economic situation could develop.

"And I think that the rest of us should admire that. That's a big part of leadership, being able to sense, as well as see the future," he said.

----

He's giving him credit for showing leadership on the issue that is No.1 in the minds of voters, especially independents. The whole Clinton-Obama rift has been greatly exaggerated by the media. Just stop talking about it. The election is not about Bill Clinton.

It is so hard, when you have a young African American intellectual that can see a clear vision to bring America back to the glory days. It is so hard, when you an intellectual young man that wants to do it right and not pander to the good old boy network to gain attention. Clinton does not like the thunder being taken away from him, that he was a good Dem. president. In sum, this is a jealous man.

There are those who find joy in the success of the next generation and are happy that said generation has and will have better opportunity, and there are those who can only muster resentment.

His legacy is fading everyday he opens his mouth.

Worse than the Lewinksy debacle. That can be forgiven. Eating your own cannot.

Why does anybody care about Bill Clinton? In reality he was a terrible President, and bears as much of the blame for the disastrous economic situation as does the Republican Party. Seriously, does everybody think this kind of thing just happens in a few years? A majority of Clinton's top initiatives were repackaged Reagan ideas just so he could have a "legacy." In reality he didn't give a rat's a*s about the American People. He only cared about his own ego. So he deregulated everything he could and pushed through horrible trade agreements that helped lead us off the cliff. But pathetic "old-school" Dems can't see that. They just see that he had 8 years in office with a D attached to his name. Well he can go to hell for all I care. Although I don't believe in an afterlife, but if there was such a place I'm sure he would have a VIP ticket.

Bush Inc. and Clinton Inc. are two sides of ONE COIN...and they both triangulate interests making themselves/cronies/toadies beneficiaries in the for-profit sectors they both rushed to deregulate and globalize for foreign interests and their international DEALMAKING. This wasn't business. This was a giveaway and war/profiteering via crony mega-deals w/Bush Inc. and Clinton Inc. as the brokers via out-of-Office friends/relatives.

How else to explain Bill's ONE BILLION DOLLAR still unvetted financial empire, sprawling across his Foundation, Global Initiative, Library -- when he and our Junior Senator left The White House defacto bankrupt due to legal bills associated w/a multitude of SCANDALS? Even by NYC standards that is a HUGE sum over the course of 7 years!

And, the STICKUP from Bush/Clinton Inc. every few years is forcing Americans and our minimized Congressional representatives -- to accept BAILOUTS, DEREGULATION and WARS (profiteering) -- or, we are told we will lose jobs, be unsafe, etc.

These thugs give us a false choice and LIE to Americans -- especially those who identify w/the Religious Right -- that they have our best interests at heart. In fact, their policies have decentralized and commoditized American interests, economic and homeland security in the global new world order Bush Sr. articulated as his vision.

Clinton's Global (Financial) Initiative -- during the UN General Assembly Sessions and their cumulative base in NYC -- w/Wall Street friends/funders we are now bailing out -- is all woven of the same tapestry.

Good Luck, Mr. B.M.O.C. getting black voters worth their salst to support and vote for you two in any meaningful way again in the future.
It was black folks who saved your rear during impeachment and supported you afterwards, you scum!
It was black folks ardent support for you that made you president and ... a millionaire, you 'user'!
ANYTHING you do now will be TOO LITTLE, TOO LATE.
You've tried to not only oppose Obama at every turn on the flimsiest of grounds (no experience, what a joke when one looks at the antics of the oh.so, self-proclaimed "experienced" McCain) but you've gone so far as to look like both you and Hill want to emasculate Obama. your prejudice so vicious and, transparent.

Make it official, Mr. Big Shot ,take your monstrous ego and your pointed and untoward and lavish praise for McCain and Palin and join the Republican Party. ONCE in your life, be an honest man.

I'd love to be the little mouse in the corner when Obama has enough support and strength to tell you: 'thanks, but no thanks, you're totally irrelevant to me and my cause"
