I Like ItI Don’t Like It
Clinton

Some Democrats who are growing wary with what they see as Bill Clinton's tepid support for Barack Obama weren't likely relieved by the former president's appearance this Sunday on Meet the Press.

Clinton offered some praise for the man hoping to fill his former chair in the Oval Office, but much of it was admiration for Obama's political acumen and not his character. "I know he saw and imagined the way this thing could develop this political year and this economic situation, in a way that has left him in a position of leadership he is now," Clinton said.

At one point, host Tom Brokaw asked, "Would you use the same words for [Obama] that you have used for Senator McCain, that you admire him and that you think he's a great man?"

Clinton seemed caught off-guard and responded, "Well, I don't -- look, I had my first conversation with him in my entire life in Harlem," a reference to a lunch the two had in mid-September. Clinton followed by stating that he "certainly admire[s]" Obama, but that while the Illinois Democrat has "unlimited potential," he could only achieve greatness in time.

At one point in the interview, Clinton acknowledged that it was his wife, Hillary, who "told me to go help [Obama]." And while Bill Clinton criticized John McCain for representing a brand of politics that he disagreed with, he offered a far more adulatory take on the Arizona Republican's personality traits.

"Most people would have been broken by what he been through, or we would have been happy just to give him an atta boy and medal and let him wander through life," said Clinton. "I think his greatness is that he keeps trying to come back to service without ever asking people to cut him any slack or feel sorry for him or any of that stuff because he was a P.O.W."

Clinton's relationship with Obama has been a topic of much angst and conversation within Democratic circles. After a bitter-primary battle in which Obama defined the 1990s as a period of excessive partisanship (albeit economic growth) and Clinton's standing within African American communities stumbled, it was not surprising that the two figures would have issues with reconciliation. The former president's speech at the Democratic Convention in Denver seemed to remedy the frostiness. But this past week - as much media attention has been heaped on Clinton's Global Initiative - Clinton has, in some ways, reverted back to form: offering more tepid support for the Democratic ticket and showing a strong willingness to compliment McCain and his running mate, Sarah Palin.

Indeed, somewhat remarkably, on Meet the Press, Clinton spoke up the Alaska Governor even as (or perhaps unaware of) conservatives themselves are beginning to abandon ship.

"Most of these people that are undecided they like John McCain and they kind of like her, what they know of her," he said. "And if they're going to move off of her or dislike her it is going to be because they think she is too conservative or too traditionally Republican or some issues that are very important to our future."

Again, Bill? You are a sorry human being and I am filled with contempt for you! Your mama would not be at all proud of you now. You give all Democrats the creeps these days.

this is what desperate men resort to when they see the clock ticking on their relevancy. it's quite sad, but there is also some beauty in it as well, dramatically speaking.

Slick willy!

Just remember people,, there are actually people who voted for Bush twice. Not once, but twice,,, these foolish voters are going to swamp us again at the polls this year. They overwhelm us every election year. Just watch, they are going to vote for the McBush ticket this year. We are in a deep funk America. It is going to take a miracle for America to recover. This is not a lie. Just watch!

You are absolutely right. That is why the Clinton attitude feels like a betrayal. Because the stakes are so high for our country.

I HOPE (though, frankly I'm not convinced it's possible given the size of his ego) that Bill and Barack can work together over the next 8 years.

Why would you want them to?

Must of Clinton's achievements were supported by Republicans.

Pay attention. If i were Obama I'd be furious, and when Obama wins no cabinet position for Hillary for refusing to put a muzzle on Bill. Her only hope a divorce. We can then vote for the first single woman inthe white house in 2016 otherwise Hillary and Bill Clinton buh bye!

It appears Bill Clinton is bitter about Hillary losing. If he wants to help then he should get on with it. If he doesn't then Democrats should put a muzzle on him. Fair enough Hillary did well but at the end of the day she lost. Now to all those Hillary supporters - do whats good for you but can you see why it was difficult in chosing Hillary as a VP? It is because if this was the case then there would be three presidents running the Whitehouse. Hillary should get on with it and I think it is clear she wants to support Obama especially if looking to grap 2012 election. Bill Clinton has humiliated Hillary enough and stay out of it. We all know that Bill likes the attention. I don't think Clinton was the best president (better than Bush) because his policy in Bosnia, Kosovo was wrong, he did nothing to resolve Cyprus and Turkey (Turkey attacked a Nato country and the world sat back and watched this), and there is the Palestine issue with Israel unresolved.

For god's sake stop praising mccain. Look at what he is now. I (or anybody else for that matter) was perfect and innocent at one time too but what I do today is what counts. OJ Simpson was great one time too look at him now. Stop this meaningless praise that just makes mccain more arrogant in behaviour.

Look at him now, Lying , corruption, excess, radical political views, war mongering, poor choices, hypocrisy, opportunism, arrogance, temper, rudeness, bad judgments, bad language, cheating on wife, selling country during saving and loans crisis and even likely possibility of setting up a dangerous war to help his election. America; you created a monster with these empty praises.

Shame on you, Bill Clinton. Not for failing to support Barrack Obama. Your jealousy is understandable.

No...you should be ashamed of yourself for praising the man who insulted your daughter.

And your failure to call Sarah Palin's qualifications into question...YOU KNOW BETTER THAN THAT...or have you forgotten the contributions of Vice President Al Gore?

I think that Bill Clinton is a selfish guy that secretly despises Obama. He is tepid in his support only because he can barely hide his contempt for Obama and what he thinks Obama did to his wife.
Hilllary is supporting Obama more than Bill apparently because Hillary still has a job, its being a Senator, and unlike Bill, who is a Past POTUS and doesn't have to do much, Hillary has to work hard to show her support.
To a large extent though, I feel that Hillary's support is genuine. Maybe she fooled me, but I think Bill was right on that one point, as a former Dem candidate she turned around fairly quickly and seems to be supporting Obama quite actively.
What Bill did not tell you is that he will do whatever Obama asks, SUBJECT TO HIS schedule.
That means, when he wants to. It is not clear to me that Bill will ever full throatedly support Obama.
His body language betrays him, as well as his ENORMOUS EGO.

Yes, Hillary's support is geniune.

Did you see that clip where she was standing between Bill and Obama ? Bill moved towards her with a kiss. Hillary turned her back on him and moved to kiss Obama.

Hillary Clinton knows that Bill is the reason she was out of the question as a VP pick. She knows that he did her more harm than good. He is deadweight to her now and I see a divorce upcoming.

I still think the Presidential candidates and VP candidates should be drug tested. You have to have a drug screen even if you are a dog catcher. I don't blame Bill Clinton if he did have a sour feeling about Barack. Barack doesn't like him either. They need to put on the gloves and have it out. That would clear the air. DING DING (Round 1) Bell . . . . Let's wait and see what history says about this deal.
McCain is a hero and he is the only candidate who is running for this high office who has fought for us and Bill Clinton knows that and would not diminish this fact in any way. Nor should anyone. DING DING (Round 2) Bell.

There are people who have fought for us who have bled, left limbs and body parts on the field of battle, and died for America, whose sacrifices far exceed McCain's if you want to split hairs. As recent as August 2008, John McCain voted against a veterans issues remedy (the new GI Bill for returning Iraq and Afghan vets). There are estimated to be 2 million vets who you could very well encounter at the off-ramp of highways holding signs. If John McCain wants to make his service appear onerous and deserving of "more" respect than other vets, that argument does not hold water, and notably, would be like cashing in on the experience, and not providing leadership that soberly reflects that experience. I'm a veteran (USMC, 8 years).

If Bill Clinton actively avoided military service, and feels compelled to heap honor and praise upon a veteran from the conflict he avoided, as a way of appearing statesman-like, that's his perrogative. Frankly, I believe Bill Clinton, not unlike Hillary Clinton, Pat Buchannan, Nora O'Donnell, Andrea Mitchell, Hannity, and others with Irish surnames are merely toeing the Irish line. Any serious expose into the kinships, influence, bedfellows, overt and covert support Irish heritage persons have for Irish candidates would make Clinton's comments now, and Hillary's during the primaries, obvious and understandable.

Why didn't he just say, "Sarah Palin is no Hilary Clinton., and the voters know that." And why did he bring up race??????? Get the hook.

There was a reason why the Admiralty Board decided to turn down McCain for a Flag position (Admiral rank ) like his father and grand father before him... He would have been a shoe in...

John McCain lost five planes. He was irresponsible. And coming through the POW thing unscathed mentally is not likely at all. Even after all of that, he came home and screwed around on his wife who loved him and waited for him. John McCain never changed. He is the same selfish little guy he always was. If he is elected president, we are ALL in big trouble.

Everything out of Bill Clinton's mouth says: HILLARY IN 2012

Not that it matters. The Clintons are yesterday's story. And they will be in 2012.

Man-- it is hard, but it is time to cut the Clinton's loose to go join Ole' Joe Lieberman.
I'm tired of the Republican's pointing out all the financial deregulation, trade bungling and media copnsolidation that happened during the Clinton years. I think I may always have defended him because they blamed everything on him, but unfortunately, I think it kept me from seeing some of what they were saying was right. My wife is reading Giving, and we were going to make donations through his favorite charities this Christmas instead of more consumer crap, but now... wow.
"Mistakes Were Made, But Not By Me" is an eyeopener, not just how Republicans fool themselves into swallowing the Jed McCain and the Wasilla Hillbillies show, but I think sometimes progressives and Democrats fooled ourselves, which didn't help fight the corruption and incompentence of BushCo and the Oil mafia--
Bottom line, it may not be worth spending the energy to defend Bill any longer.

I never thought I would say this, but Hillary Clinton has earned my respect with how she has conducted herself since she made her concession speech. She has been out there - often out of the limelight - for Obama. And now I can begin to sympathize and empathize with her again as I remember how disrespectfully her husband treated her. Make no mistake about it, I despised Hillary during the primaries but she has been a class act especially when contrasted with the horrible job her husband has been doing. But remember, we all thought that during the primaries, Bill Clinton was trying to sabotage Hillary too. He is just a loser, that WJC. We see you Bill. We know your game. So you can't praise Obama because you have only spoken to him once? ( not true btw, as during Katrina they both toured together) But you can praise Palin and her family whom you have never met, only heard about her quite recently and she is not from your party? Hmmmmm...

I believe she would be the nominee had she divorced Bill. That is absolutely the one reason I could not vote for her and will continue to be. I will never trust Bill Clinton, alone in a government office again ... especially with nothing to do.

She stayed with him because I think they had a pact. But Bubba is the king, doncha know. Hillary lost me with the Kosovo sniping. That was blatant and out of her mouth. I just could not get past that manipulation. So as I see it, the Clintons did themselves in. Obama is being punished because she is not the VP pick. He does not see that he is the reason. Oh well.
