I Like ItI Don’t Like It
Clinton

Some Democrats who are growing wary with what they see as Bill Clinton's tepid support for Barack Obama weren't likely relieved by the former president's appearance this Sunday on Meet the Press.

Clinton offered some praise for the man hoping to fill his former chair in the Oval Office, but much of it was admiration for Obama's political acumen and not his character. "I know he saw and imagined the way this thing could develop this political year and this economic situation, in a way that has left him in a position of leadership he is now," Clinton said.

At one point, host Tom Brokaw asked, "Would you use the same words for [Obama] that you have used for Senator McCain, that you admire him and that you think he's a great man?"

Clinton seemed caught off-guard and responded, "Well, I don't -- look, I had my first conversation with him in my entire life in Harlem," a reference to a lunch the two had in mid-September. Clinton followed by stating that he "certainly admire[s]" Obama, but that while the Illinois Democrat has "unlimited potential," he could only achieve greatness in time.

At one point in the interview, Clinton acknowledged that it was his wife, Hillary, who "told me to go help [Obama]." And while Bill Clinton criticized John McCain for representing a brand of politics that he disagreed with, he offered a far more adulatory take on the Arizona Republican's personality traits.

"Most people would have been broken by what he been through, or we would have been happy just to give him an atta boy and medal and let him wander through life," said Clinton. "I think his greatness is that he keeps trying to come back to service without ever asking people to cut him any slack or feel sorry for him or any of that stuff because he was a P.O.W."

Clinton's relationship with Obama has been a topic of much angst and conversation within Democratic circles. After a bitter-primary battle in which Obama defined the 1990s as a period of excessive partisanship (albeit economic growth) and Clinton's standing within African American communities stumbled, it was not surprising that the two figures would have issues with reconciliation. The former president's speech at the Democratic Convention in Denver seemed to remedy the frostiness. But this past week - as much media attention has been heaped on Clinton's Global Initiative - Clinton has, in some ways, reverted back to form: offering more tepid support for the Democratic ticket and showing a strong willingness to compliment McCain and his running mate, Sarah Palin.

Indeed, somewhat remarkably, on Meet the Press, Clinton spoke up the Alaska Governor even as (or perhaps unaware of) conservatives themselves are beginning to abandon ship.

"Most of these people that are undecided they like John McCain and they kind of like her, what they know of her," he said. "And if they're going to move off of her or dislike her it is going to be because they think she is too conservative or too traditionally Republican or some issues that are very important to our future."

Why don't you get down and lick his boots Mr. Brokaw! Pandering Pander. You make a sorry excuse as an investigative journalist. In the tank and on the payroll for the Republicans. Both of them!
My take is this. Clinton sucking up and supporting McCain in backroom deal - McCain gets rid of Palin and inserts Hillary? Even if Hillary doesn't know it. Bill has ruined Hillary Clinton!

The Clintons knew they had this one in the bag. Bill is not going to praise and honestly support Obama. He very resentful of the people's choice and should really check his behavior. He was ready to become president all over again through his wife. The Clinton's have had their 8 years. We don't need the same people over and over again. Bush the father; Bush the son. Bill the husband then the wife. Notice how stressed Michelle Obama looks when the Clintons are introduced. She stares at them as if she looking into the eyes of Count Dracula. I've seen it several times and especially during the Dem Convention. She knows first hand just how cutthroat the Clintons are. Bill go home and do something else. No family should have a monopoly on the Presidency; they become too powerful.

Also, a friend of mine thinks that Palin may set down and Lieberman will step in. I have no data to back this up. Pure speculation from my friend.

Wow, that is odd because we heard that the reason Biden kept complimenting Hillary Clinton and making remarks about her being a better choice for VP than he was sparked rumors that he was going to step down and Hillary would be selected. The thing is that the Palin addition to the McCain ticket has made such a remarkable impact on the election and the perception of voters that Obama is anti-woman and anti-Hillary and anti-Clintons as is his wife, that his choosing Hillary after all would squelch all these rumors. I guess it's all a perception depending on where you are sitting.

For those of you who still believe Hillary should have been Obama's VP pick please reconsider. Could you actually imagine Bill accepting Obama as Hiilary's superior? Would he not do everything in his power to undermind his presidency and elevate his wife? If Bill can't contain his contempt for Obama now, what would four years of him close to the White House be like?

They're both adulters and political opportunists. I guess he admires in McCain what he sees in himself.

Bill Clinton has become a living parable: The higher you climb the farther you fall; and his fall has the potential to become a bottomless pit . Despite my misgivings about Hillary, her praise - even though belated and lacking warmth - shines like a sun compared to Bill's which reminds me more of an eclipse. Obviously he has forgotten a maxim of old: Damning with faint praise. I must conclude that when considering just how faint that praise is - more for McCain than Obama - he appears to want Obama to go to the deepest levels of H-LL.

Bill's conduct validates both the worst fears of democrats and the negative opinions of many Obama supporters. Doesn't he realize that all he is doing is to insure the continuing decline of his power within the party?

His misconduct has go on for much too long and gone much too far, so now he rightly deserves our scorn and contempt. It is time for Bill Clinton to either be quiet or be thrown out of the party since no past glories can justify his current conduct. If he wasn't Bill Clinton everyone would be comparing his betrayals to those of Senator Lieberman.

History will be the ultimate judge, but I contend it would be better for him to fade into obscurity rather than be most remembered as the ultimate sore husband. But, alas for us and him, I fear it is already too late! Alas poor Bill I knew him

Bill is a loser and he needs to shut-up. We democrats know what Bill is trying to do, he wants Obama to lose. He blames Obama for beating Hillary. He cannot get over the fact that he hurt Hillary as well as her senior advisers. They are not about change and Obama is. Go back to the bridge that is going nowhere.

PLEASE - seriously people Clinton is campaigning for Mcain - he has done more for Mcain than Obama hands down. The should be shunned as a Lieberman and cut the hell out of the process. Hillary has done scant better - these are the supposed LEADERS of the democratic party!

It is no wonder that there are people who will not identify themselves as Dems - it is because we as a group can screw even a done deal up. Of course it is also what makes us great - the ability to actually LISTEN to apposing views and consider all the options. BUT what Clinton has NOT done is enough for EXPULSION in this - the most crucial of elections in the century.

Please stop making excuses for them, they are doing all they can to be able to say "told you so" NOV 5.

Sad ... he made a big deal this week saying he wasn't going to savage McCain ... it'd be unseemly for a former president. Too bad he didn't have those same qualms this Spring. I actually think this helps Obama ... I just hope the DNC knows to never send out another mailer with his picture on it ever again. At least I won't have to waste my breath defending his philandering, lying and dishonorable ways anymore ... believe me, I did it plenty for many years. He is such a narcissist he can't stand the idea of somebody stealing his thunder. Pathological ...

Have any of you actually watched the interview? It is a thoughtful and positive tone that the president takes.

You can support everything Bill has to say, but you'd have to be naive to not acknowledge that this is just one in a long string of backhanded compliments he has paid to his party's nominee. Starting with his, "You could argue no one's ready to be commander in chief" to his leave Sarah Pailin alone mantra, he has been doing nothing but parsing his words with barely concealed contempt. But I guess it depends on what your definition of "Is" is.

A letter writing campaign is underway to inform Bill that we are on to him and that he needs to get his act together or drop out of the picture for a few weeks. The site below contains a letter that can be used as is or modified to your taste. It also contains a link to Clinton's web address. Please circulate. (Hillary has come through, What Bill is up to is just plain wrong.)

Oh brother! This is ridiculous. How old are all of you? You would think that BC said that he was voting for the other guy. Honestly, have you watched the interview?

Have you, it's pretty sad. There is a reason why Chris Rock and SNL went after Bill, b/c it is apparent what he is doing. He struck a nice tone at the convention, so it's not that he doesn't understand. He is effusive of McCain and Palin's qualities, and praise for Obama has to be drilled out of him. Plus its bs.

He really admires a man that used to joke about his daughter being ugly and his wife a lesbian? One that insults other Republicans by saying that they are like Bill Clinton? McCain has taken every cheap shot he can at Clinton, Clinton's legacy, and Clinton's family, yet he can't stop praising him.

Clinton is one of the best communicators alive, yet this is just luke warm at best. I think if he would switch Obama and McCain's names out, I would be happy.

Bill IS voting for the other guy. If you think, honestly, that Bill Clinton wants President Obama in office over his old dear friend Sen. McCain, then I have a bridge to nowhere to sell you. Face it, people see right thru Bill's hot garbage of support and we aren't lemmings that will fall in line and support Bill's antics because of the good ol' days. Get real and get a grip.

Bill, you owe us. BIG TIME. I blame _you_ for this mess we're in. Had it not been for you and your ego, the lies you told us regarding your relationship with Monica Lewinsky, and the complete fiasco that summed up your last 60 days in office, Al Gore would be the President, and the American people would not be in this cluster f___ of a mess we now find ourselves in. Yet, incredible as it may seem, here you go again, getting ready to screw us for another four, if not twelve, years. I really did admire you once. Hell, I loved you. But today, you totally, totally suck. If you cost us this election, we'll never forgive you. And, you can forget your precious legacy, too. History will remember your name as President Toast." Final words: Dude get on the BUS, or shut the hell up!

F Bill Clinton! The thing that's most obvious is that OBAMA doesn't Bill to do a d@mn thing for him. Have you all been paying attention. He got in spite of Clinton and Hillary and when he wins there will be NO credit given to Clinton and that'll really make people dislike him even more.

There's a great deal of exageration going on about a rift between Barack and Bill. I don't see anything significant there. I think Bill Clinton's admiration for John McCain is sincere. He probably admires a lot of other politicains from both parties. I dont see that as destructive or even unusual.

Bill Clinton is a democrat. Before Barack Obama achieved the status in the party that he has now, Bill Clinton was the heart and soul of his party. Old habits die hard and politicains are for the most part highly self confident and ego driven. Give Bill a chance to adjust to his new position inside the party.

I believe that Bill, Hillary and Chelsea are still in a state of shock. They thought they had the nomination locked up, and for quite a while it looked like it was hers or the taking.

But, along came the most original and intelligent politician America has seen for a long time, and he took what a lot of people said he could never do, the nomination away from the Clinton political machine. This whole thing is a media creation.

That's an odd appraisal of McCain. I don't know how one would define "broken", but hiring the thugs that used your own daughter in slanderous attacks against you in order to win an election flies in the face of the principled McCain that was. And his POW history is not just a tool he uses to demand respect, but a virtual platform for his campaign. It's fine to say I personally like him or he was a POW and POWs are war heroes. But Clinton's assertions beyond that are at best polemical, and at worse, false.
