Article (Nice try FOX News):

Conservatives Begin Questioning Palin’s Heft
by Associated Press
Sunday, September 28, 2008
http://elections.foxnews.com/2008/09/28/conservatives-begin-questioni...

A growing number of Republicans are expressing concern about Sarah
Palin’s uneven - and sometimes downright awkward - performances in her
limited media appearances.

Conservative columnist Kathleen Parker, a former Palin supporter, says
the vice presidential nominee should step aside. Kathryn Jean Lopez,
writing for the conservative National Review, says “that’s not a crazy
suggestion” and that “something’s gotta change.”

Tony Fabrizio, a GOP strategist, says Palin’s recent CBS appearance
isn’t disqualifying but is certainly alarming. “You can’t continue to
have interviews like that and not take on water.”

“I have not been blown away by the interviews from her, but at the
same time, I haven’t come away from them thinking she doesn’t know s-
t,” said Chris Lacivita, a GOP strategist. “But she ain’t Dick Cheney,
nor Joe Biden and definitely not Hillary Clinton.”

There is no doubt that Palin retains a tremendous amount of support
among rank-and-file Republicans. She draws huge crowds, continues to
raise a lot of money for the McCain campaign, and state parties report
she has sparked an uptick in the number of volunteers.

(continued)

Asked about Palin’s performance in the CBS interview, a McCain
official briefing reporters on condition of anonymity said: “She did
fine. She’s a tremendous asset and a fantastic candidate.”

But there is also no doubt many Republican insiders are worried she
could blow next week’s debate, based on her unexpectedly weak and
unsteady media appearances, and hurt the Republican ticket if she
does.

What follows is a viewer’s guide to some of Palin’s toughest moments
on camera so far.

Speaking this week with CBS’s Katie Couric, Palin seemed caught off-
guard by a very predictable question about the status of McCain
adviser Rick Davis’ relationship with mortgage lender Freddie Mac.
Davis was accused by several news outlets of retaining ties - and
profiting from - the companies despite his denials.

Where a more experienced politician might have been able to brush off
Couric’s follow-up question, Palin seemed genuinely stumped, repeating
the same answer twice and resorting to boilerplate language about the
“undue influence of lobbyists.”

These missteps could be attributed to inadequate preparation and don’t
necessarily reflect more deeply on Palin’s ability to perform as vice
president. But when reporters have tried to probe Palin’s thinking on
subjects such as foreign policy, she’s been similarly opaque.

In an interview with ABC’s Charlie Gibson, Palin gave a muddled answer
to a question about her opinion of the Bush Doctrine.

Could we have a representative from TSA to be there with a metal detector to check for the sort of hidden little box Bush wore during his presidential debate.

And given the chance to describe her foreign policy credentials more
fully, Palin recited familiar talking points, telling Gibson that her
experience with energy policy was sufficient preparation for dealing
with national security issues.

In the same interview, Palin let Gibson lead her into saying it might
be necessary to wage war on Russia - a suggestion that most candidates
would have avoided making explicitly and that signaled her discomfort
in discussing global affairs.

Then, asked this week by Couric to discuss her knowledge of foreign
relations - in particular, her assertion that Alaska’s proximity to
Russia gave her international experience - Palin tripped herself up
explaining her interactions with Alaska’s neighbor to the west.

On the economy, too, Palin has avoided taking clear stances. In a
largely friendly interview with Fox News Channel’s Sean Hannity, Palin
spoke in tangled generalities in response to a question about a
possible Wall Street bailout - and even preempted her campaign by
coming out against it.

On Thursday, Palin finally took questions from her traveling press -
but shut things down quickly after Politico’s Kenneth P. Vogel asked
her whether she would support Alaska Sen. Ted Stevens, who has been
indicted for corruption, and Rep. Don Young, who is under federal
investigation, for reelection.

Unlike her other interviews, at least this time Palin had the option
to walk away.

Couric at her best...being smug and arrogant with Palin. Wonder if Biden would get the same treatment or would Joe punch her in the mouth.

Trying to cast Palin as the victim in this interview is utter bull$h!t. She agreed to do this interview, no one held a gun to her head when she answered Couric's questions.

Yes...those darned "reporters" asking candidates "questions". What ever are they thinking? Don't they know that the Republican Party publishes talking points for all it's candidates and spokespeople. Those should be more than enough to satisfy those "smug" and "arrogant" members of the Fourth Estate.

I think she is fakeing it, to sound dumb, to pull the wool over Bidens eyes once the Debate starts! If I was Biden, I'd be careful of this lady! No one is this dumb!

I have to disagree. She has been consistently sullying her reputation and credibility beyond reproach. Her support has waned substantially in the last week or so. Her lack of experience has been clear to everyone as a result of this interview and as well as documented coverage. Biden has been in the Senate since 1972. He's has over 30 years of experience and is no dummy. Give him some credit for his experience - he's paid his dues. To say that she'll pull the wool over his eyes unfairly and incorrectly undermines his experience.

She doesn't have enough upstairs to be an effective component in the campaign, never mind as vice-president, and she has proven that. She's falling on her face and she can't get up. The media rightly doesn't respect her; her support has been waning; McCain's own advisers have said that she's stupid; she's been a tarnish on this campaign, which is why she had been blocked from making an appearances or comments. What does that tell you?

Do the math and you'll see she's a zero.

In 2000, Bush and his handlers pulled the wool over Gore's eyes. Happened again in 2004. What makes you think it won't happen again? Complacency and over confidence leads to defeat. According to my math, zero + nero x stupid citizens = POTUS

Trust me....she IS dumb!!! Just look at ALL the interviews she had given so far. None of them are impressive!!

One wise man told me once: Its better to keep your mouth shut and let others perceive that you are stupid than open it and prove it.

She has done exactly that. There is no substance in ANY of her answers, not just to Couric, but also to Charlie. To me Katie seems like just doing her job well. She does not come across smug or arrogant. Shed your preconceived notions about her.

I'm not crazy about Katie Couric either, but to me she came across as more politely disbelieving than smug, and a lot of the time she looked like she was patiently explaining the obvious to a not very bright child for about the fiftieth time, like when Palin was touting McCain's support of regulating the financial markets and Couric had to break the news to her that well, actually, McCain has ALWAYS been in favor of LESS regulation, not more.

I wouldn't worry about the wool being pulled over Biden's eyes, or anyone's in the Obama campaign actually. HuffPo had that story about how the O campaign has been watching old video of Palin's Alaska debates (they say she's actually a great debater - I'm dubious, but at least they're working to raise the bar so she can't just step over it), and Biden's been prepping for this debate for weeks now. I think they'll be very ready for either the possibility that she's better than we think, OR as thick as a plank. Based on how well Obama performed, I think the O campaign will have this covered.

I personally don't think she's faking how unprepared she's been in these interviews. I think she's probably a smart enough woman when it comes to handling local issues she's familiar with in Alaska. But on a National level? She's just so over her head that she comes off as ignorant.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 11:52 AM on 09/28/2008

She is not faking anything. She is clearly in over her head. Her party has put her on a pedistal that is so high and is going to come crashing down hard. She is actually a victim. I am not feeling sorry for her becauase she did not blink before getting on board with these people. McCain keeps victimizing her by saying she was and is the most popular governor in the U.S. and she knows more about energy than anyone else in the United States. What a position he put her in. I feel I am a pretty intelligent person, but if I had to do those interviews, I concede to the fact that I would look like an idiot too.

I won't believe there's going to be a VP debate until it actually happens. The McCain campaign is going to manufacture some bizarre excuse to pull Palin out (Bristol's getting married!!). They might even forgo that formality and just pull out. Whatever, it looks now like the damage from canceling the debate would be less than the damage from letting her run loose for 90 minutes in prime time.

She's dumber than a bag of hammers. However, it's too scary to be funny.

How can anyone think this woman should be allowed anywhere near the launch codes ?

Ultimately, McCain showed poor judgment in this selection. That alone, disqualifies him.
